KERAPLAST SMOKE EXHAUST
Keraplast Oy
PURPOSE OF SMOKE EXHAUST
In a fire situation, smoke and heat ex-
haust ventilation systems create and
maintain a smoke free layer above the
floor by removing smoke. They also
serve simultaneously to exhaust hot
gases released by a fire in the developing
stages.
Natural smoke exhaust is most suitable
in single store buildings, where smoke is
extracted via hatches and/or windows
placed on roof or top part of exterior wall.
Natural smoke ventilators are also used
in staircases of multi-storey buildings.
EUROPEAN STANDARD EN
12101 (Smoke and heat control
systems)
Part 2 of above mentioned standard
(Specification for natural smoke and
heath exhaust ventilators) describes
main features of Natural Smoke and
Heat Exhaust Ventilation System
(NSEVS). Accordance is shown by plac-
ing CE label to ventilator. Key features of
ventilators are reliability,
aerodynamic efficiency , performance
under snow and wind load, and resis-
tance to heat.
Contract documentation and lim-
its of supply
It is recommended to include following
parts of NSEVS for main contract:
Smoke ventilators
Control panels and smoke vent but-
tons
Signs and triggering plans (scheme)
Report from installation and first test
release[certificate of installation]
Handover documentation
Cables and cable works are usually in-
cluded in electrical contract. Connection
works may be included either in main
contract or electrical contract.

SMOKE EXHAUST SYSTEM OF A
BUILDING
Scheme of a building, where two decen-
tralized control panels and centralized
button controls the smoke exhaust sys-
tem. This solution gives optimized cable
costs.
Control system
Control panel 230 VAC/24 VDC
Control panels have built-in battery
back-up. Control systemmust be battery
back-up for 72 hours in case of break in
electricity. Loading varies from 2A up to
64 A (gradation 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64A).
Selection of control panel depends on
current consumption from hatches.
Hatches shall be opened in groups as
smoke reservoir. Each room makes own
smoke reservoir. Large rooms shall be
divided by smoke barriers for smaller res-
ervoirs, as one area of one smoke reser-
voir should not exceed 1600m
2
in indus-
trial and storage buildings. Particularly in
larger buildings control panels should be
decentralized to reach reasonable cable
thickness. Smoke vent buttons are often
centralized to main entrance and/or
nearby fire alarm central. Scheme of
smoke exhaust system must be placed
next to smoke vent buttons.
Company web site has more detailed in-
formation about control panels, buttons
and detectors. Also cable dimensioning
formula and software is found at com-
pany web site, see
www.keraplast.fi/savunpoistoautomaatio
Design, installation and mainte-
nance of smoke exhaust system
Detailed information of design of NSEVS
may be found at publications
CEN/TR 12101-4 (Installed SHEVS
systems for smoke and heat ventila-
tion)
CEN/TR12101-5: (Guidelines on func-
tional recommendations and calcula-
tion methods for smoke and heat ex-
haust ventilation systems)
Installation of smoke exhaust system
must be done by company/person
trained and approved by manufacturer to
sign installation report in behalf of manu-
facturer. First functional test of complete
installed NSEVS should be done and
documented before handover, and test
report should be saved in log book of
building.
Routine checking shall be carried out by
qualified persons, according to national
regulations valid in the country of use of
the system and to the manufacturer's in-
structions. The system shall be main-
tained at least once a year including a
functional test. If replacement of compo-
nents is necessary, the system shall re-
main in accordance with this standard.
Maintenance shall be done by a qualified
professional body. More frequent mainte-
nance visits may be required, especially
when the environment conditions are
poor. Only original spare parts shall be
used. The log book shall be kept by the
owner showing all maintenance, inspec-
tions and modifications carried out, plus
any defects and repairs.
