NATIONALS WIRE

OPPONENT

DREAM DOZEN
Washington has played errorless baseball in 12 straight games dating to June 25...
this is the longest string of errorless baseball recorded in MLB this season.
The 12-game run of defensive perfection is the 2nd-longest recorded by the Nationals since landing in DC in 2005...in 2011, from June 2-15, Washington played
a Nationals (05-pres.) record 13 consecutive games without an error...with an
errorless game tonight in DC, the Nationals would match that club mark.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES
By debuting with their current clubs earlier this season, Nate McLouth
and Steve Lombardozzi became the 21st and 22nd players to play for
both the Nationals and Orioles (for the complete list entering the 2014
season, see page 140 of the Nationals Media Guide)...the 2 clubs have
also shared 2 managers (F. Robinson, D.Johnson) and 3 coaches...Buck
Showalter managed Matt Williams for 2-plus seasons while skippering the Diamondbacks...together, they helped ARI claim the NL West
Championship in its 2nd season and become earliest expansion club to
win a division title...the D-Backs 35-win increase from 1998 (65 victories) to 1999 (100) remains the largest one-year jump in MLB history.

BETTER LEATHER
The Nationals have made just 3 errors in 29 games dating to June 7 and yielded just 2
unearned runs in June to set a new club mark for fewest unearned runs allowed in a
calendar month...as the season has progressed, the Nationals fielding percentage
has risen while their error totals and unearned runs allowed have declined:

5 WEEKS OF GOOD BASEBALL

Washingtons 23-13 (.639) record dating to May 30 is tied for the 2nd-best in MLB
with CIN, PIT and SEA...only behind the Athletics (24-11, .686) have been superior...
in this span, the Nationals have outscored their opponents by 52 runs (158 to 106).
RISP-Y BUSINESS
The Nationals, in 8 games dating to the nightcap of the June 28 twinbill at Wrigley
Field, are 27-for-74 (.365) with 10 doubles and one home run (Jayson Werth, 2-run
shot in the 4th inning, Wed. vs. COL) with runners in scoring position.
KEEPING SCORE ON THE SEASON
The Nationals own the NLs 2nd-best (MLBs 5th-best) run differential at +53 (361 for, 308
against)...MLBs top 5: OAK (+140), LAA (+74), SEA (+66), LAD (+62), Washington (+53).
SCORE 4 = WIN MORE
The Nationals are 39-3 when scoring 4 or more runs and, conversely, just 9-37 when
limited to 3 or less runs by opposing pitchers.
NATIONALS STAFF EARNS GOLD OR SILVER IN MANY STATISTICAL CATEGORIES
Washingtons 3.08 staff ERA leads MLB (OAK is 2nd at 3.11)...Nationals pitchers also
rank among MLBs top 2 in these categories: fielding-independent pitching (first,
3.15), fewest earned runs allowed (first, 274), walks/9.0 inn. (first, 2.43), fewest
walks (first, 216), SO/BB ratio (first, 3.27/1), homers allowed (2nd, 57), homers allowed/9.0 inn. (2nd, 0.64), fewest blown saves (2nd, 6).
THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN ...
At 2.71 (80 ER/265.2 IP), Washington relievers rank 3rd in MLB in bullpen ERA behind
only the Mariners (first, 2.45) and Padres (2nd, 2.46).
STOP THIEF!
Nationals catchers, with a little help from Steve McCattys pitching staff, currently
rank 2nd in MLB having gunned down 19 of 47 (40.4%) would-be basestealers this
year (pitcher caught stealings excluded)...in all of MLB, only the Cardinals (47.4%,
18 of 38) have posted a higher percentage this season than Washington...in 13, the
Nationals ranked 29th throwing out 14 percent (15 of 110) of would-be basestealers.
DINGERS FROM THE DIAMOND DIRT
The 51 home runs hit by Washington infielders (14 from 1B, 8 from 2B, 13 from 3B, 16
from SS) this season rank 2nd in MLB behind only the Blue Jays (55) infield.
POWER FROM THE PIVOT
The Nationals pace MLB in home runs (24) hit by middle infielders (COL is 2nd with
22)...16 of these 24 middle-infield homers have been hit by shortstops (Ian Desmond
14, Zach Walters 1), 8 by second basemen (Danny Espinosa 6, Anthony Rendon 2).
FAST TIMES
The Nationals 83.6% team stolen-base percentage (46 stolen bases, 9 caught stealings) leads the NL and ranks 2nd in MLB behind only the Athletics (84.1%).
POP FROM THE TOP
Denard Span (28 doubles, 5 triples, home run) currently leads all big league leadoff
hitters with 34 extra-base hits...COLs Charlie Blackmon (29) ranks 2nd.
Spans 28 doubles currently rank 3rd in the NL/4th in MLB...his next 2-bagger will
match Nick Johnsons 2006 record for most doubles (29) posted by a member of
the Nationals prior to the All-Star break.
WITH > WITHOUT
With Ryan Zimmerman in the starting lineup this season, the Nationals are 26-16
and average 4.8 runs per game (200 runs, 42 contests)...in 46 games sans Zimmerman, Washington has averaged of 3.5 runs a game (161 runs, 46 games) and is 22-24.

THE SERIES
Since MLB returned to DC in 2005, the Os lead Battle of the Beltways
series, 27-20, and the annual season series (Washington is 1-4-3), which
began in 2006...the 2 clubs did not play in 2005...Washingtons lone
season-series win came by winning 4 of 6 matchups in 2007...29 of the
series 47 games since 2006 have been decided by 2 runs or less, including 19 one-run contests (Washington is 5-14 in contests decided by the
minimum).

SUMMER 2014
DC Public Library Summer Reading Program - The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, as the presenting sponsor, provided a $4,000

Nationals Activity Book that concentrates on the areas of math, science
and geography. Those completing the summer reading program receive
2 tickets to select Nationals games. In addition, a number of Nationals
players are scheduled to read to young kids at various libraries on July 19.
