III. Insights
The demand for garlic has decreased in the past years due to the decrease in demand and in turn
the decrease in area allocated for garlic production mainly in CALABARZON (shift to squash),
MIMAROPA (aphid attack), and Ilocos Region (shift to tobacco). The reason for the decrease in garlic
production relative to 2011 is perhaps caused by the decrease in profitability of the said crop, as
seen in the net profit per kilo. The Philippines is importing around 70 percent of its garlic
consumption, which means there is a lot of room for the production of garlic locally.
Currently, garlic prices are high because of some producers who hoard the supply. For this same
reason, several groups have requested that more garlic should be imported into the country.
[The data is somehow confusing because the Philippines is importing seventy per cent of its garlic
consumption, but the production and import levels are both below ten thousand as of the year
2012. The figures from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics and the figures from the news reports
are different, but according to the news, a lot of garlic is being imported illegally into the
Philippines.]
