A bi-partisan group of lawmakers signed a letter Wednesday asking for the immediate return of a United States Marine jailed in Mexico who is only hours away from facing a federal court judge in Tijuana on charges that he crossed the southern border with his weapons in violation of the law.
Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi is on day 101 of his imprisonment in Mexico, after he said he accidentally crossed into a San Ysidro border checkpoint on March 31, and could not make it to the turn around lane before stopping at the Mexican government checkpoint. The 26-year-old veteran, who had two tours in Afghanistan, had three legally U.S. registered guns in the back of his vehicle along with all of his possessions.
He had traveled to San Diego from his hometown in Florida seeking treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He had been diagnosed with PTSD 10 days prior to his arrest. The San Ysidro crossing point did not have a clear turn around sign back to the United States.
