A sample of the first crop from a Brooklyn home relief subsistence garden as it was received by Miss Charlotte Carr, acting
director of the Home Relief Division of the Emergency Relief Bureau. The bushel basket contains 17 varieties of vegetables.
So far 1,500 Brooklyn gardens have produced 5,000 bunches of radishes, three tons of beans, 10,000 bushels of white turnips

Victory Gardens were born during World War I as way to both address public food shortages and boost morale,
empowering civilians to contribute to the war effort and (literally) enjoy the fruits of their labor by planting food in yards,
community gardens, parks and rooftops. Victory Gardens, which were promoted and supported by governments not only
in the U.S. but also in other countries at war By 1944, Victory Gardens were producing about 40% of fruits
