AVOID DEHYDRATION & HEAT STROKE THIS SUMMER

Limit Heat Exposure in Elderly
Summer is well on its way, and when the temper-
ature heats up its imperatve to provide your
elderly patents with a litle extra care. Below are
two common illnesses seniors may be at risk for
during the warmer months, and suggestons on
how to avoid them:

Dehydraton
During the warmer months elderly patents are at
a greater risk for dehydraton because their bod-
ies do not adjust as well as young people to sud-
den changes in temperature. They also lose the
ability to conserve water as they age, so hydra-
ton is priority.

Steps to stay hydrated:
Ofer fuids regularly
Keep water accessible and available
Encourage patents to drink 8 ounces of
fuid with medicaton
Heat Stroke
According to the CDC, heat stroke is
the most serious heat-related illness
and can cause death or permanent disability if
emergency treatment is not provided. Heat stroke
occurs when the body becomes unable to control
its temperature.

Small increases in temperate can shorten the life
expectancy for seniors, so limit outdoor actvites
and instead choose locatons that ofer cool at-
mospheres.

It is imperatve to seek medical atenton immedi-
ately if you believe a patent is experiencing a
heat stroke. Warning signs may include:

A high body temperature
(above 103F)
Red, hot and dry skin (no sweatng)
Rapid, strong pulse
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Several months ago, Trina (a resident of Carefree Living Brainerd)
wanted to quit smoking. She had had many failed attempts in the
past but really wanted to make it work this time. Employees were all
trying to encourage her and one mentioned to Trina that if she could
quit smoking "maybe Laura could shave her head". Now, I will do
almost anything for a good cause and a laugh or two, but I will not
shave my head. Both Trina and I finally came to an agreement that if
Trina quit smoking for two months I would get my hair cut into a pixie
(something I would NEVER voluntarily have done!). I checked with
staff often, trying to get them to tell me if Trina had been sneaking
cigarettes. She hadn't. I checked with NOC shift; surely she had
snuck out and had one late at night or early morning?! She had-
n't. Lo and behold, I am extremely proud of Trina who has now been
without a cigarette for over 90 days. I had to keep up with my end of
the bargain so last Thursday I got over 4" of hair cut off! Trina was
happy to see that I had followed through and then asked, "What will
you do if I lose 50 pounds?"

Last month I talked about employee
satisfaction and development, which
is one of our organizations 5 strate-
gic goal areas.

To recap, as an organization we
want to ensure we have the best
staff, who are well trained and enjoy
their jobs and careers. We do not
want our employees to be part of
the 30% of heath care workers who
dont understand their goals. Or the 18% that are ac-
tively disengaged.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, Erica Frey and
other members of the Human Resources team will be
conducting listening sessions. During these sessions
employees are encouraged to speak openly and candid-
ly of what we do well and where improvement is need-
ed. Listening sessions will be held:

You might ask yourself, what is the purpose of a listen-
ing session? These meetings will not only give you the
opportunity to talk about whats working and whats
not, it will also give management the opportunity to
understand what you need to be successful. Our goal
for our organization is to have 100% of all our employ-
ees satisfied and engaged in their work and their job.

Furthermore, your feedback will provide us with valua-
ble feedback as we evaluate programs, policies and
trainings available to all personnel in the coming
months.

Como Zoo and Conservatory
Located near downtown St Paul, the Como Zoo and Conservatory is
one place to go for something free to do in St. Paul. The Como Zoo is
open year round and is free, although donations are accepted. From
April - September, the zoo and conservatory are open from 10 AM - 6
PM and other attractions are available as well like Como Town and Mini
Golf.

Minnesota State Capital Building
The Minnesota State Capital Tour is another free attraction in Minneso-
ta. Here you can learn about the history of the capitol, its art, and archi-
tecture. Tours are 45 minutes and leave on the hour and they are abso-
lutely free.

Minnesota Childrens Museum
The Minnesota Childrens Museum is free on the third Sunday of the
month from 9am -5pm., other dates the price is $8.95. Located in
downtown St. Paul the Childrens Museum is one of the popular places
to go with kids. The museum offers seven galleries with plenty of activi-
ties to entertain everyone.

Summit Brewery Tour
The Summit Brewing Company in St. Paul offers free tours of their
brewery. Tuesdays and Thursdays the tour runs at 1pm. Saturdays
(excluding Holiday weekends) the tours begin at 10:30 am and 1 pm.
Reservations are required to tour the brewery, and it is recommended
to reserve Saturdays 1-2 months in advance.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
One of the country's largest urban sculpture parks, the Minneapolis
Sculpture Garden features more than 40 works of art and the Cowles
Conservatory. At the Center is a beloved Twin Cities landmark -- the
playful fountain "Spoonbridge and Cherry" -- as well as 18 holes of
artist-designed mini golf in the summer.

Minnesota Vikings Training Camp
Located at Mankato State University, Mankato. The Minnesota Vikings
encourage fans to watch the players and coaches practice for the up-
coming season. There are many interactive events for adults and chil-
dren as well as plenty of food and beverage vendors. The Vikings Lock-
er Room Store is open to purchase souvenirs and other Vikings mer-
chandise. Admission to the practices is free and run at varying times in
late July to Early August.

Munsinger Clemens Gardens
This well-known, beautiful garden park is located along the Mississippi
River in St. Cloud. The Munsinger portion of the gardens began in the
1880s. The gardens have experienced different stages of development,
with many of the improvements coming as a result of work during the
Great Depression through the WPA. The Clemens portion is dedicated
to different varieties of roses. During summer months, there are free
music concerts within the gardens.

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center
Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, located in Duluth, this
is the most visited marine museum on the Great Lakes. 1,000-foot
freighters pass within 200 feet of the building. Open daily throughout
shipping season.

Soudan Underground Mine State Park
Soudan Underground Mine State Park- Located in Soudan about 90
miles north of Duluth. Minnesotas oldest iron ore mine is located here
and visitors can learn how mining shaped the history
and culture of the Iron Range. You can take an un-
derground mine tour and go mile down to the deep-
est area that was mined (there is a fee for the tour).
There are also hiking trails to explore.

th
.
