SAFE SCAN II flame scanner system is designed to detect the presence of the flame in the furnace from two

different sources using the same scanner head. It discriminates b/w an individual oil gun flame and a background
fireball flame by sensing the different characteristics (frequency & intensity level) of the visible light they emit.
It contains a lens for observing the flame and a fibre optic cable that transfers the visible light emitted by the
flame w/o distorting the flame signal characteristics.
The lens and fibre optic cable are located on the Fire side of the windbox.
At the scanner housing assembly, the visible light (flame) signal impinges on a photodiode. The photodiode
converts the visible light signal to an equivalent electrical signal. This electrical signal is conditioned by
amplifiers in the scanner housing assembly and is converted to an equivalent current signal to be transferred to
the remotely located card rack assembly.
In the scanner housing, the flame signal is processed in such a manner that two limits are established. The
intensity signal and no flame/dark furnace condition.
The card rack assembly separates the current signal into its frequency and intensity components and monitors for
faults.
Intensity component: processed by intensity and fault detection card. If the intensity component falls outside the
two acceptable limits set by the card electronics, fault light (channel fault and rack fault) will come on.
When the intensity signal is within its limits, above the drop out, the channel intensity light comes on (Intensity
permit) and the milliamp meter indicated the flame signals intensity component.
Frequency component: processed by frequency detection card. The type of flame established will provide a
frequency spectrum. The card rack contains two frequency detection cards for each scanner channel. One proves
the flame frequency of the FB and the second card proves the flame frequency of its associated oil
gun(discriminating). Each FDC contains a frequency generator which must be adjusted to match the frequency of
the flame (FB or DISC) being observed. When the frequency match is made, the associated YELLOW trim will
go off or flash occasionally and the associated frequency light will come on. The selected/adjusted frequency
must be less than the present fuel flame frequency. (Frequency permit).
If the individual oil gun flame is adequate, then only the associated gun can remain in service. The 2/4 flame o/p
signals assure that the Boiler can safely be retained in service or not.
