DUSHU BL-16
Governor Shu
LOCATION
1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous
process of the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6).
LOCATION NOTE
Locate at the visible highest point of the paraspinal muscles.
NEEDLING
Oblique insertion towards the spine, 0.5 to 1 cun, or
transverse-oblique insertion 1 to 1.5 cun.
Caution: perpendicular needling or oblique needling away
from the spine carries a substantial risk of causing a
pneumothorax.
ACTIONS
Regulates qi in the chest and abdomen
INDICATIONS
Heart pain, epigastric pain, abdominal distention,
borborygmus, chills and fever, breast abscess, itch-
ing, psoriasis, alopecia.
COMMENTARY
Although conventionally categorised as the back-shu point
of the Governing vessel, it is interesting to note that
Dushu BL-16 was not discussed at all in such texts as the
Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the Illus-
trated Classic of Acupuncture Points on the Bronze Man or
Elucidation of the Fourteen Channels. This downplaying of
Dushu BL-16 is reflected in other classics by the absence of
any clear indications of disorders of the Governing vessel,
and the general paucity of indications and classical com-
bination for this point as a whole. Its modern use is in the
treatment of various skin disorders including psoriasis,
alopecia and generalised pruritis.

and Xuehai SP-10.
