A
lex Gurda of Executive Commercial Prop-
erties paints a pretty nice picture for all par-
ties included: Developer, City and
community..."A major retail development project
in Huntington Beach recently received a serious
fund injection as developer DJM landed ap-
proximately $93 million in financing. The
funds were arranged by George Smith Part-
ners Principal and Managing Director Steve
Bram and Senior Vice President David Pas-
cale. The funding is divided between a $56.5
million senior loan and a $37 million mezza-
nine loan. DJM will be using the proceeds to
continue the development process at its Pa-
cific City project.
The 191,000-square-foot retail center is lo-
cated near the Huntington Beach Pier, along
Pacific Coast Highway, three blocks away
from Main Street. It features a two-story
open design that facilitates views of the
nearby Pacific Ocean to the largest part of the
propertys tenants. With only a small amount of
preleasing necessary as part of the financing
process handled by George Smith Partners, in-
formation regarding the propertys tenant
roster is still rather scarce.
Set to debut in 2015, the retail
component of Pacific City will
include a wide range of lifestyle brands, popular
dining spots and an Equinox fitness center. The
propertys Lot 579 will be a market-
place-style arrangement featuring local and
regional food vendors in the vein of San Fran-
ciscos Ferry Building. Construction at the proj-
ect began late last year on the lot that DJM had
acquired back in 2012. The process will con-
tinue with no changes in the development
schedule due to the securing of the two loans.
The Pacific City development project was
approved back in 2004, and calls for a brand
new mixed-use experience to be built in Hunt-
ington Beach on a 31.5-acre plot of land, offer-
ing new retail, residential units and a
hospitality facility. Currently, DJM Capital
Partners Inc. is in charge of development for
the commercial/retail project, R.D. Olson De-
velopment is handling the construction of the
eight story, 250-key hotel that will also include
5,800 square feet of meeting and banquet
space. Crescent Heights is listed as the appli-
cant for the 17.23-acre multifamily component
of the development that would include 516 residen-
tial units.

roasted chicken and bulk foods like
grains, coffee, seeds and nuts, dried
fruits and healthy snacks in self-
service bins.
Like all Smart & Final stores, the
new location also carries a large se-
lection of Club Pack sized prod-
ucts for stocking-up and a broad
assortment of foodservice, janitor-
ial and other supplies for busi-
nesses and organizations.

work as the ground was hard.
His only son, Vincent, who
used to help him, was in
prison. The old man wrote a
letter to his son and described
his predicament:
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad,
because it looks like I
won't be able to plant
my tomato garden this
year. I'm just getting too
old to be digging up a
garden plot. I know if you
were here my troubles
would be over.. I know

dig the plot for me, like

That's where the bodies are

Tomato Garden Story
A
n elderly man in Texas calls his son in New
Jersey and says, "I hate to ruin your day son,
but I have to tell you that your mother and I
are getting a divorce; 45 years of marriage... and that
much misery is enough!" "Dad, what are you talking
about?" the son yells. "We can't stand the sight of
each other any longer," the old dad explained.
"We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking
about this, so you call your sister in California and
tell her!". Frantic, the son calls his sister, who
explodes on the phone. "Like hell they're get-
ting divorced!" she shouts, "I'll take care of
this." She calls her elderly father immediately,
and screams at him, "You are not getting di-
vorced. Don't do a single thing until I get
there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll
both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a
thing, you hear me?" she said as she hung up
the phone. The old man hangs up his phone
and then turns to his wife. "Okay", he says,
"it's all set. They're both coming for Christmas
and paying their own air-fare."

ational Public Works Week
was celebrated recently and
there's no more important and
unsung city department than Public
Works. It's the one you don't think
about unless something goes wrong. It
helps you drive safely, drink safe water
and so much more. It works to protect
you 365 days a year.
One of the top Public Works De-
partments is in Huntington Beach,
CA, where 200 full-time and 30
part-time employees apply their
magic. Public Works tests water
quality more than 30,000 times a
year, maintains 360 miles of sewer
lines and 29 lift stations (which
pump 9.5 million gallons of sewage
daily), deliver 9.5 billion gallons of
water through 626 miles of pipe,
maintain 143 signalized intersec-
tions and 3,765 park, parking lot
and street lights, as well as all city
vehicles and buildings (from Civic
Center, the Fire Stations and Li-
braries to the Recreation facilities).
"It takes talented people to do this
and I've never worked with a better,
more caring group than here in HB,"
said Travis Hopkins, Director of Pub-
lic Works. "They really take pride in
what they do."
Public Works employees recently
showed residents exactly what they do
at a special Surf City Night's exhibit.
Billy Wallace, a certified arborist,
stood by his tower truck explaining
how his group helps maintain 65,000
trees. Rick Legere showed how his
folks operate all the street valves and
fire hydrants. "A small computer en-
ables us to keep a history of each valve
and what condition it's in," he said.
Terry Tintle and his team maintain the
street markings and stop signs. "We
take our jobs very seriously because
they involve you and your family's
safety," said Tintle, one of several em-
ployees with more than 30 years expe-
rience.
Mark Birchfield works in "waste-
water," like Ed Norton of the fa-
mous Jackie Gleason show, "The
Honeymooners." He jokes about
Norton but also takes his job seri-
ously. "If sewage gets into storm
drains it goes into the ocean," he
said. "Twenty years ago, it took 24
months to clean the city's sewer sys-
tem. Ten years ago it took 12
months. Today, it takes 7-8 months
to clean because of new technology
and our trained personnel."
Birchfield showed how small
cameras, with tracks, like a tank,
journey through sewer lines to help
identify the problems. Chris Gray,
who retired after 37 years, explained
how bad the city's infrastructure
used to be. "We couldn't see inside
the sewers but now with the camera
and our CCTV trucks, you can see
what needs to be done. Cleaning is
done with high pressure water,
much faster and more efficiently
than before. There even are different
nozzles for grease, root cutting and
calcium deposits. We don't have to
dig up the streets as much as we
used to and many pipes are lined
from manhole to manhole."

done by Public Works. If you see

OIL - You better be sitting down when you read this!
As you may know, Cruz Construction started a divi-
sion in North Dakota just 6 months ago. They send
every Kenworth (9 trucks) we had here in Alaska to
North Dakota and several drivers. They just bought
two new Kenworth's to add to that fleet; one being a
Tri Drive tractor and a new 65 ton lowboy to go with
it. They also bought two new cranes (one crawler &
one rubber tired) for that division.
Dave Cruz said they have moved more rigs in the
last 6 months in ND than Cruz Construction moved in
Alaska in the last 6 years.
Williston is like a gold rush town; they moved one
of our 40 man camps down there since there are no
rooms available.
Unemployment in ND is the lowest in the nation at
3.4 percent last I checked.

industry is fueling North Dakota 's economy?
Here's an astonishing read. Important and verifiable
information:
About 6 months ago, the writer was watching a news
program on oil and one of the Forbes Bros. was the
guest.
The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery
since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to
eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The
Energy Information Administration sm(EIA) estimates
it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is
recoverable( 5 billion barrels), at $107 a barrel, we're
looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 tril-
lion.
"When I first briefed legislators on this, you could
practically see their jaws hit the floor.
They had no idea.." says Terry Johnson, the Montana
Legislature's financial analyst.
However, a recent technological breakthrough has
opened up the Bakken's massive reserves, and we now
have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because
this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost
Americans just $16 PER BARREL !!!!!!
That's enough crude to fully fuel the American econ-
omy for 2041 years straight.
And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this
next one should - because it's from 2006 !!!!!!

HBPD - Ambassador Program
T
he Police Department is putting the final
touches on a Downtown Ambassador pro-
gram set to Launch July, 14, 2014. The
program consists of adding one
daytime and two nighttime ambas-
sadors who will provide additional
security and hospitality services for
our businesses and guests. The am-
bassadors will help answer ques-
tions, provide directions for guests
as well as observe and report on se-
curity and quality of life issues im-
pacting the Downtown area. The
ambassadors will be licensed secu-
rity guards hired through a contract
with a private company. They will
be trained on when to act versus
when to observe and report to the
Police Department. Visit HB will
provide training on the local area,
amenities, and business we have to
offer our guests. A component of the program
also includes linking the bar security personnel,
the ambassadors, and the Downtown police offi-
cers via a security radio for better coordination
and more timely response. The program is start-
ing this summer on a trial basis as a result of a
public private partnership with the
Police Department, the Downtown
Business Im-provement District,
Visit HB, and the Downtown bar
owners. Our goal is to provide a
more comprehensive approach to
public safety Downtown where
more people and businesses are ac-
tively working to improve the
Downtown experience. The pro-
gram will run for 12 weeks begin-
ning Monday, July 14, 2014, and
will be evaluated continually for ef-
fectiveness. Once the program has
proven successful, the City will be
engaging again with our partners to
obtain permanent funding options
to consider.

he Huntington Beach Police Department con-
ducted a Sobriety/Drivers License Checkpoint
on Friday, May 23rd, 2014, on Main Street and
Palm Avenue from 7:15 PM to 2:20 AM. Checkpoints
are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity
for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and
provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
Over the past 12 months, there have been 8 alcohol re-
lated collisions on Main Street. These resulted in 2 in-
juries to the vehicles occupants. There have also been
59 citations issued to drivers on Main Street for being
unlicensed or driving on a suspended/revoked license.
Sobriety/Drivers License checkpoints help lower DUI
related deaths and injuries. A major component of these
checkpoints in the deterrent effect it has on those who
might drive drunk and/or drug impaired, unlicensed, or
with a suspended/revoked license. Checkpoints help to
bring more awareness to motorists and encourage
everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traf-
fic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
checkpoints have provided the most effective docu-
mented results of any DUI enforcement strategies. Here
are some of our statistics from Fridays checkpoint:

7 Standardized Field Sobriety Tests adminis-
tered

The Huntington Beach Police Department
will be conducting another Sobriety/Drivers Li-
cense checkpoint on Aug. 16, 2014, in the De-
partments ongoing commitment to lowering
deaths and injuries upon our streets and high-
ways.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Hunt-
ington Beach Police Department by a grant from the
California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding
everyone to continue to work together to bring an end

an Diego Padres pitcher Alex Torres
wasnt trying to make a fashion statement,
he was just trying to protect his head.
Torres, a 26-year old lefthander from
Venezuela, became the first MLB pitcher to wear a protective cap in a game
when he was summoned from the bullpen in the eighth inning of the June 21
game against the Dodgers. The new headwear is fitted with energy-diffusing
protective plates that create bulges
around the sides and front of the cap.
Not surprisingly, its heavier than the
normal baseball cap. The cap looks
awkward, but its looks are no more
awkward than its name: isoBLOX.
No sooner had Torres taken the
mound then social media erupted with
comments, most of them negative and
derogatory. Players, commentators,
fans and even Torres wife mocked him
for donning the cap. The cap is ar-
guably the ugliest item of clothing ever
worn on a baseball diamond, but for
Torres, the wardrobe change was all
about safety, and with good reason. Every
time a pitcher takes the mound, he puts his
career indeed his life - in jeopardy.
During the past several years, a number
of pitchers have taken a line drive to the
noggin, most notably the Arizona Dia-
mondbacks Brandon McCarthy in 2012;
Torres teammate last year with the Tampa
Bay Rays, Alex Cobb; and Cincinnati
Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman during
Spring Training this year.
McCarthy required emergency brain surgery to save his life. Cobb suffered
a concussion that cost him two months of the season. After taking a line drive
to the face, Chapmans injuries included broken bones in his left eye, a con-
cussion, and a broken nose. He also had surgery to install a titanium plate in
his head. However, because Chapman was hit in the face, its doubtful that
the protective headwear could have prevented his injuries.
Protection for pitchers is long overdue. A batted baseball can come back at
a pitcher even faster than he throws it, sometimes in excess of 100 miles per
hour. Although a pitcher begins his windup standing 60 6 from home plate,
he finishes his stride much closer to the hitter, oftentimes off balance, making
it difficult to protect himself.
Total MLB payroll will exceed $3.5 billion this year and pitchers make up half
of a teams roster. Therefore, it behooves the league to protect its investment.
This year the league adopted a new rule on blocking the plate which was de-
signed to protect catchers. Beginning in 2008, MLB required
coaches to wear helmets on the field after a Minor League coach
was killed by a batted ball. Why should pitchers be left out?
Playing pinball with a pitchers head is no laughing mat-
ter. Rather than being ridiculed, Torres should be com-
mended for his intelligent decision to don the new
protective headwear.

arlier this week, Governor
Brown signed legislation to
better protect Californias stu-
dents by reforming the teacher dis-
missal process. Assembly Bill (AB)
215, jointly authored by Assembly-
member Joan Buchanan and Senator
Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), stream-
lines the process for cases involving
teacher conduct that could jeopard-
ize student safety. AB 215 will now
make it more efficient and less ex-
pensive, while maintaining fairness
and teachers right to due process.
Public safety, especially for chil-
dren, is Californias biggest priority.
This law will better protect our
children by ensuring that any
teacher jeopardizing student
safety is effectively removed
so they can no longer prey on
innocent victims, said Correa.
AB 215 would establish a bi-
furcated process aimed at
moving the most serious and
egregious cases toward closure
in less time to keep our chil-
dren safe in their learning en-
vironments. Specifically this
adds egregious misconduct
and defines such conduct as
certain sex offenses and drug
offenses, and child abuse in-
cluding sexual abuse and neg-
lect. The procedures for review
must commence within 60
days of the employees de-
mand for a hearing.
Earlier this year, Senator Correa
introduced legislation on reducing
procedural complexities in cases in-
volving teacher misconduct and suc-
cessfully negotiated the basic tenants
to AB 215, which received broad
support from education and teacher
groups.

he Huffington Post - Healthy Living
segment brings us a reality check on
why, where and to what extent drink-
ing and death are connected..."a new study
from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention suggests a more imminent danger
for the state and its neighbors: alcohol.
According to the report, published in the
journal Preventing Chronic Disease, Col-
orado and other Mountain-region states have
the highest alcohol-related death rates in the
country -- several points higher than the na-
tional average of one in 10 deaths.
New Mexico leads the country with 16.4
percent of alcohol-related deaths, while
Maryland has the lowest rate at 7.5 percent.
Regionally, Alaska and almost all of the
Mountain-region states have alcohol-related
death rates higher than the national average.
The stark exception: Utah, which has some
of the most restrictive alcohol selling and
purchasing laws in the U.S.
"Excessive alcohol use is a huge public
health problem," study researcher Dr. Robert
Brewer, of the CDC's Alcohol Program, told
The Huffington Post. "It's killing people in
the prime of their lives."
For the report, CDC researchers tallied al-
cohol-related causes of deaths from 2006 to
2010. They scanned 54 different causes of
death linked to alcohol, which range from
acute conditions like violence, alcohol poi-
soning and motor vehicle collisions, to
chronic conditions like breast cancer and
heart disease. Researchers estimate that ex-
cessive drinking kills an average of 88,000
people in the U.S. each year, and shortened
the lives of those who died by an average of
30 years. About 70 percent of these deaths
involve working-age adults ages 20 to 64.
But those counts could well be an under-
estimate, said Brewer, because deaths from
pneumonia, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and
hepatitis C weren't part of the analysis. Ex-
cessive alcohol consumption -- which the
CDC defines as eight or more drinks per
week for a woman and 15 or more drinks
per week for a man -- plays a significant role
in increasing risk for those diseases, as well.
"At the time we were putting this tool to-
gether and coming up with the methodology,
we just didn't have good estimates of the re-
lationship between alcohol and certain con-
ditions," Brewer explained. Additionally, the
numbers are based partly on self-reports of
alcohol consumption, and people generally
tend to underreport the amount they drink.
"So even though it's a big number, we re-
ally think this is a significant underesti-
mate," said Brewer.
Alcohol is a toxin and known carcinogen
that can increase the risk for chronic health
conditions or escalate their severity. Because
an estimated 38 million Americans drink al-
cohol excessively, there's a lot of potential
good that could come from people choosing
to drink just a little less, said Dr. David
Crabb, director of the Indiana Alcohol Re-
search Center. Crabb wasn't involved in the
study, but praised the new research and
echoed the need for intervention at an indi-
vidual and public health level.
"A lot of the injury isn't just the people you
consider alcohol abusers, but a much a larger
group that binge drink or consume higher
levels than recommended -- more than 1 [to]
2 drinks a day," Crabb told HuffPost.
One of the most important things drinkers
can do is educate themselves on the proper
serving sizes of their favorite beverages. For
instance, one big wine glass may actually
hold two servings, and a pint of craft beer will
likely have higher alcohol content than a
standard 12-ounce beer, Crabb said.
Medical professionals can also do their part
by asking questions about alcohol use during
primary care check-ups and hospital visits,
Crabb added. Even a brief "intervention"
about the dangers of heavy alcohol use can
be enough to encourage an estimated 25 per-
cent of excessive drinkers to take the drinking
down a notch.
And on a policy level, local governments
can try to curb alcohol-related deaths by in-
creasing state taxes for alcohol, regulating al-
cohol store density and holding alcohol
retailers legally responsible if they sell alco-
hol to people they shouldn't.

ships, an event to raise money for
student scholarships, on Sunday,
September 14th on the beautiful
GWC campus from 4 7pm.
This family event will feature
over 30 local restaurants, wineries
and breweries serving signature
food and beverage samples for

music, opportunity drawings, and

which will stay aloft at 65,000 feet for up to four days, is powered by two 2-liter, four-
cylinder engines that provide 150 horsepower each. It has a 150-foot wingspan, will
cruise at approximately 150 knots and can carry up to a 450-pound payload.
"Phantom Eye is the first of its kind and could open up a whole new market in col-
lecting data and communications," Darryl Davis, president of Boeing Phantom Works,
said today at the unveiling ceremony in St. Louis. "It is a perfect example of turning
an idea into a reality. It defines our rapid prototyping efforts and will demonstrate the
art-of-the-possible when it comes to persistent intelligence, surveillance and recon-
naissance. The capabilities inherent in Phantom Eye's design will offer game-changing
opportunities for our military, civil and commercial customers."
Boeing Defense, Space & Security President and CEO Dennis Muilenburg ad-
dresses the crowd of employees gathered in St. Louis to view the Phantom Eye, a hy-
drogen-powered unmanned airborne system.
Later this summer, Phantom Eye will be shipped to NASAs Dryden Flight Research
Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., to begin a series of ground and taxi tests in
preparation for its first flight in early 2011. That debut flight is expected to last be-
tween four and eight hours.
"The program is moving quickly, and its exciting to be part of such a unique air-
craft," said Drew Mallow, Phantom Eye program manager for Boeing. "The hydrogen
propulsion system will be the key to Phantom Eye's success. It is very efficient and
offers great fuel economy, and its only byproduct is water, so it's also an environmen-
tally responsible aircraft."

We often see and
read reports about en-
vironmental threats to
womens health, but arent there
also concerns about which men should be especially vigi-
lant? ~ Jay Walsh, Boston, MA
Indeed, women arent the only ones who should be worried
about environmental threats. A recently released report
(Mens Health: What You Dont Know Might Hurt You)
by the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG)
concludes that environmental exposures may have major
negative impacts on mens health as well, and outlines ways
that guys can avoid some of the major risks.
Most men understand that smart lifestyle choicessuch
as exercising regularly, eating a healthful diet and not smok-
ingmake a big difference in staying healthy, says EWG
researcher and report author Paul Pestano. However, what
many men might not know is that research in the last few
decades has shown that environmental exposures may con-
tribute to major
diseases and
health concerns
that especially
affect men, in-
cluding heart
disease, prostate
cancer and infer-
tility. He adds
that toxic sub-
stances in drink-
ing water, food,
food packaging
and personal
care products
have all been
linked to serious
health problems
that affect mil-
lions of Ameri-
can men.
According to EWG, mens heart disease risks are exac-
erbated by exposure to mercury in certain seafoods, Teflon
chemicals in non-stick cookware, and bisphenol-A (BPA)
in hard plastic containers and canned foods. Additionally,
arsenic and lead in drinking water supplies is a contributing
factor in elevated heart disease risks for men. Meanwhile,
certain agricultural pesticides common on fruits and veg-
etables as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that
build up in meat and dairy products have been associated
with prostate cancer, the second most common cause of
cancer for American men. And exposures to lead, pesti-
cides and chemicals in personal care products contribute
to low sperm counts, infertility and other reproductive is-
sues for men. EWG also underscores the importance of
limiting sun exposure, as men face a higher risk of devel-
oping melanoma than women.
While genetics can predetermine certain health out-
comes, there are a number of ways men can dramatically
reduce their potentially harmful environmental exposures,
Pestano says. Some tips include:
investing in a water filter system specifically de-
signed to reduce exposure to lead, arsenic and other drink-
ing water contaminants (see EWGs Water Filter Buying
Guide to find the right one);
avoiding canned foods and plastic containers with the
recycling code #7 to limit BPA exposure;
using personal care products that dont contain phtha-
lates, parabens or other potential contaminants (see EWGs
Skin Deep database that lists toxic chemicals in some
69,000 personal care products);
choosing conventionally grown fruits and vegetables
that have the fewest pesticide residues and buying the or-
ganic versions of certain types of produce that otherwise
rely heavily on chemicals (EWGs Dirty Dozen guide
lists apples, grapes, strawberries, celery, peaches, spinach
and sweet bell peppers as the worst offenders among oth-
ers); and
using proper sun cover and getting regular skin checks
with a dermatologist to reduce melanoma risks.
By following these guidelines along with eating a
healthy, varied diet and getting regular exercise, men can
significantly reduce their health risks and potentially add
years to their lives.

n a list dominated by Australian and Cali-
fornian wineries, one South American
brand stood out as the worlds most pow-
erful of 2014.
The Drinks Business Power Brands Report,
compiled by the drinks business together with
Intangible Business, sees the worlds most in-
fluential wine and spirits brands pitted against
each other to determine the worlds most powerful
based on a scoring matrix. (see below)
Focusing on the
wine sector, many
of the industrys
big hitters returned
this year to take
their place in the
top 10, with some
significant shifts.
In a top 10 dom-
inated almost en-
tirely by US and
Australian winer-
ies, one Chilean
winery stood out as
the worlds most
powerful climbing
two spots to be
crowned the
worlds most pow-
erful wine brand.
Barefoot, owned
by Californias E&J Gallo winery, made its debut
in the power 10 sliding comfortably into 5th place,
while US wine giant Blossom Hill narrowly
missed out on a top 10 place having been pushed
to 11th.

Methodology
Nearly 200 of the
largest brands in the
wine and spirits indus-
tries were scored by
nine panelists to derive
a list of the 100 most
powerful alcoholic
drinks brands. Power is
defined by a brands
ability to generate value
for its owner. Value is
classified by a series of measures as identified
below.

Share of market: volume-based measure of
market share
Brand growth:
projected growth
based on five years
historical data and fu-
ture trends
Price positioning:
a measure of a
brands ability to
command a premium Market scope: the number
of markets in which the brand has a significant
presence
SOFT MEASURES
Brand awareness: a combination of both
prompted and spontaneous awareness
Brand relevancy: capacity to relate to the
brand and a propensity to purchase
Brand heritage: a brands longevity and a
measure of how it is embedded in local culture
Brand perception: loyalty and how close a
strong brand image is to a desire for ownership
A panel independently ranked each brand out of
10 on the above measures (10 = high, 0 = low).
The scores were aggregated and averaged to reach
a total score for each brand. A total score was
achieved by multiplying a brands weighted vol-
ume by its brand score (a derivative of the eight
measures of brand strength), within a defined
range. The weighting is designed to adjust the vol-
umes to a comparable level.

Americans Know Driving Drunk and
Distracted Is Dangerous, Do It Anyway
Half of people who think texting while driving is
dangerous have done it in the past
R
oughly one-fourth of Millennials admitted to
frequently talking on a cell phone while be-
hind the wheel (Shutterstock).
Erin Marquis | AOL Autos Staff tells a chilling
story of who just might be driving the car next to
us..."Americans are behaving badly while driving,
and they know it. A new Harris Poll found the vast
majority of Americans recognize the dangers of
drunk driving, texting while driving and other dis-
tractions, but many still engage in these activities
anyway.
According to the poll, nearly all Americans (94
percent) believe drinking three or more drinks then
driving is dangerous or very dangerous. Buzzed
driving didn't get a pass either: Sixty-eight percent
of Americans believe driving after one or two drinks
is still a hazard. Still, 37 percent of those surveyed
who drink alcohol say they've driven when they
knew they probably had too much. Three in ten
agreed that they are more likely to get behind the
wheel after a few drinks if they only have to drive a
short distance.
Texting spurred similar reactions, with 94 percent
believing that sending texts while driving is danger-
ous and 91 percent believing that reading texts while
driving is dangerous or very dangerous. Even
though texting while driving is known to be highly
risky, 45 percent have read texts (15 percent fre-
quently doing so) and 37 percent admitted to send-
ing a text (14 percent doing so frequently) while
behind the wheel. Two-thirds of people surveyed
said speaking on the phone is dangerous, but only
36 percent said using a hands free device is just as
dangerous.
Millennials were the worst offenders in the study.
Roughly one-fourth of drivers from this generation
admitted to frequently talking on a cell phone, send-
ing text messages and writing text messages while
driving. To be fair, previous studies have suggested
that parents may be just as guilty of this risky be-
havior as the younger generations.
Some other scary distractions drivers have copped
to: One in four admitted to engaging in personal
grooming while driving, another quarter said they
posted to social media, 19 percent said they have
read a book, magazine or newspaper and 13 percent
have watched a video on a smartphone or tablet
while behind the wheel.

OL Auto inserts a gender preference to the road
trip notion..."Sorry, dads, you're the better driv-
ers, but as road trip companions, you come up a little
short. According to a new study from Visiting Angels,
an in-home care company, 54 percent of adult chil-
dren would rather take a trip with their mother than
their father.
The group asked 400 adults with parents at least 65
years old who would be a better road trip companion.
Moms won, with 65 percent saying she kept the car
cleaner than dads and 60 percent saying she picked
better music. Sixty percent said dads were too con-
trolling.
Even though Dad was determined to be more likely
to engage in bad driving habits, more likely to engage
in road rage and more likely to nod off behind the
wheel, 63 percent still considered him better driver.
Almost a third of respondents said moms drive too
slowly. Eighty-five percent said they were more likely
to ask for directions.
Inside the car, though, Mom was less annoying, a
critical attribute for a road trip companion, though 63
percent did say their moms would subject them to
deep conversations from which there was no escape.
Apparently, however, the assault on the ears one gets
with Mom is preferable to the assault on the nose that
comes from Dad: 77 percent said their fathers were
more likely to pass gas in the car.

I
n the six years since the Great Recession first started, the governments
most expansive tool to combat the recession and stimulate growth has
been its Quantitative Easing (QE) program. The initial round of QE
was insufficient to spur on the
economy, so when that ended
we added a second round.
When that second attempt was
still not good enough, we
added a third. As that third
round winds down and
nears completion we
find ourselves ask-
ing questions not
just to determine if
it was worth it, but
did it work at all?
The data sug-
gests that QE may
not have had any
real effect on stim-
ulating economic
growth. According
to the Bureau of
Labor Statistics, there
were 146.6 million
Americans gainfully em-
ployed before the start of the
great recession. Today there are
145.8 million Americans working
800,000 fewer than seven years
ago. In that same time, the Labor Force
Participation Rate, which measures the percent-
age of Americans working, has fallen to a mere 62.8% - the lowest reading
since 1978. These statistics send a clear signal that the labor markets have
not recovered during the time QE has been in effect.
The most recent reading on first quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
was another major disappointment, showing that the economy actually
contracted by 2.9%. This was the worst reading on GDP since the peak
of the Great Recession in early 2009.
The GDP data showed that the contraction was not limited to a specific
area. Rather, it was more indicative of an
across the board contraction. Cuts were made
in private inventory investments, state and local
government spending, exports, and fixed in-
vestments (both residential and non-residential).
The most concerning part of the report was that consumer spending,
the primary component of our nations GDP,
was also revised lower.
So were the QE programs worth the over $4
Trillion we spent on them? Perhaps that de-
pends who you ask. Wall Street sure likes it
as the sustained era of cheap money has pro-
pelled stock markets to record highs. Those
fortunate enough to remain gainfully em-
ployed have also benefitted as low mortgage
rates have propelled housing affordability to
multi-year highs.
Overall though, QE has been an economic dis-
appointment as the US economy overall continues to
struggle. The argument could always be made that the
situation would be worse if QE had never happened. This
is a hypothetical argument that no one will ever know the true
answer to. But factual data and economic statistics leave little
doubt that QE reached its full desired effect. As future genera-
tions work to pay back the record deficits and national debt that
has resulted in the meantime, the question they will likely ask for
decades is, was it worth it?

tration. Back when the con-
cept of global warming was
still nascentonly eight
years ago, mind youScott
and Julie Brusaw of Sagle,
Idaho, began heavily con-
templating an idea that Scott,
an electrical engineer, had
toyed with as a child: solar
panel roads.
After years of figuring out
many ways not to make a solar panel, the Brusaws have
developed a modular-panel paving system that's attracted
interest from the Federal Highway Administration, General
Electric, and even Google. If their Indiegogo campaign,
started this past Earth Day, receives $1 million by the end
of May, the Brusaw's company, Solar Roadways, will be
able to test its heavy-
duty tempered-glass
product in parking lots
and eventually high-
ways throughout the
country.
The versatile panel-
ing has a lot going for
it. Where most roads
ice over in the winter,
solar roadways are
equipped with heating
elements that keep
them clear. Where
blacktop consumes light and requires bright headlights
to navigate at night, solar roadways come outfitted with
road-powered LEDs. Where potholes burden travelers
for months, individual damaged panels can be fixed in a
matter of minutes because nearby panels deliver automated
alerts to electricians. They can even store and treat
stormwater that erodes current byways and put an end to a
Wi-Fi-less America.
Most impressive is Solar Roadways' energy and capital
potential: The Brusaws did the math and found their panels
more than pay for themselves. Solar panel technology is
not cheap when done correctly, but Solar Roadways could
conceivably produce more than three times the electricity
Americans use each year.
That energy would power homes, roads, and as of today,
even the White House. President Obama announced a plan
to push solar energy in 2010 and is reinforcing his intent
by symbolically reinstalling solar panels at 1600 Pennsyl-
vania Avenue.
