Recently I got a company transfer from Chennai to Pune. While I was very excited of moving to
Pune with plans of even settling down their permanently, there were only 1 thing which I was
most apprehensive about !ow to move my Chennai registered car to Pune.
"rom the outset, i #new that the process is very long, complex, cumbersome, confusing and
difficult for a common man to complete. $$% people advised me to sell my car in Chennai and
purchase a new car their. &ut I loved my car and did not want to sell it and hence decided to ta#e
up the challenge of going through this process.
'ou all #now that cops in India pounce on every opportunity of mincing extra money the moment
they see a out of state vehicle. (nd I am a person who do not want either the (gents or the )raffic
cops to earn money which goes into their poc#et as a bribe.
!ence, am publishing this simple process to help all others. I am outlining the process I went
through while transferring my car from Chennai to Pune and believe that the process will be the
same for any vehicle being moved anywhere in India.

&asically, there are * steps to getting your vehicle transferred to a different state completely
+tep1 ,- .etting Police Clearance and /0C from !ome +tate R)0 office
+tep1 ,- Paying Road )ax in new state as soon as you shift
+tep2 ,- Choosing between the option of getting new state number or retaining the old state
number
+tep * ,- Refund of tax paid in previous state3while moving out of state
Note: Since my car was owned fully by me with no loan due to anyone, I am explaining direct
process. In case you are still paying loan of your car, you will also need Bank NO which you can
directly obtain by speaking in your bank.
Ste' 1 ! (etting Police Clearance and )OC fro$ Ho$e state *O Office+
Step !a "# $et %olice learance ertificate: (im of this is to ascertain that there is no crime
record associated with your car. )he process I believe is the most simple step in the entire
exercise.
4ocuments /eeded RC &oo#, Insurance Certificate, I4 Proof 54riving 6icense7, (ddress Proof
5RC is not accepted as address proof. )hey will accept anyone among Passport, Ration Card,
&+/6, 8oting Card, any government I4 which has address on it, Pvt Company I4 Card along with
a address proof letter from !R.
Note: &ddress in these documents should be same as what is mentioned in ' Book.(
Process
i. )a#e original and 1 set of xerox of the documents to Chintadripet Police +tation, (runachalam
+treet. It is located about 299mts from Chintadripet 6ocal train station. Wor# timings are :on;+at
$.29 ; 11.29pm. Resident in other states can en<uire in any R)0 about the police station which
issues /0C and go their.
ii. .o to /0C section and tell them that you need /0C. )he officer in;charge will chec# your
original and xerox documents after which he will give you a application to be filled.
iii. "ill the application with details from your RC boo#. +ubmit it along with vehicle document xerox
copies and fees of I/R193;
iv. 0fficer will once again chec# the documents, ma#e entry and as# you to collect the Clearance
certificate next day.
v. .o next day as advised and collect it. )here will not be any complications in this step if your
papers are in order.

8alidity )his clearance certificate is valid for = days. 'ou have to apply for /0C in R)0 within
these = days
Step !b "# $et NO from ')O Office: )his is not as difficult as it loo#s.
4ocuments /eeded * copies of "orm 1> 5download from any R)0 website7, RC &oo#, Insurance
Certificate, Police Clearance Certificate, Pollution Control Certificate, (uthori?ation 6etter, 1 set of
I/R @3;stamp, glue, stapler, pencil
Note: . If the *ehicle is a financed one, we need to apply for termination of the hypothecation
before applying for NO and get it cancelled in the ' book by pro*iding original ' book, +
copies of ,orm -., one copy of the letter got from the bank, original of pollution check
copy, insurance copy and IN'./0 stamp. It will take - days.1fees is IN'!+./0(
Process
i. "ind out the R)0 where the car was Originally *egistered 5first owner registration R)0 area7.
I am the second owner of my car. I had registered in Chennai /orth;West R)0 while 1st owner
had registered in Chennai +outh;West R)0. +o, I had to go to Chennai +outh;West R)0 0ffice.

ii. &efore going to R)0, fill up "orm 1>, (uthori?ation 6etter so that your time spent in R)0 is
minimum.
iii. 'ou need to fill * copies of "orm 1> if your vehicle is under ban# loan. Blse, fill 2 copies
iv. In form 1>, you need Pencil print of vehicle chassis. )his is very simple. !old the page against
chassis number and start rubbing the paper with pencil without applying much pressure. In few
minutes, you will be able to see the imprint of chassis number on the paper. )ry this on a rough
paper once before doing on "orm 1>. /ote that all 23* "orm 1> should have this imprint. (lso, it
can be anywhere on the 1st page of "orm 1>.
v. :a#e a set of "orm 1> 5all copies7, RC 0riginal, Insurance Cerox, Police Certificate 0riginal,
Pollution Certificate Cerox, (uthori?ation 6etter. 0n 1st page of "orm 1>, stic# 1 stamp. +tic# the
second stamp on (uthori?ation 6etter.
vi. .o to R)0 0ffice and en<uire who will sign the application for /0C. 'ou will be directed to a
officer who will chec# the papers and sign it. If anything is missing, he will advice you.
vii. (fter getting the sign of officer, go to Payment section and pay the fees of I/R@93; for the
/0C. 'ou will get 1 sets of receipts. Paste 1 receipt on your application form and #eep the
second copy of receipt safely. Bn<uire the person collecting payments on where the form should
be submitted and submit the application there.
viii. 'ou will be told when to come and collect the /0C. )hey usually ta#e @ wor#ing days time.
.o when advised and collect the /0C.

8alidity /0C is valid for 1 month
)a#e this /0C and happily shift the vehicle to new state without any worries for 1 month 4
