1 Requirements
1.1 Hardware required
In order to work with the SIMATIC Manual Collection you will need:
A PC with:
- a Pentium class processor,
- at least 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended),
- at least 65 MB of hard disk space for Acrobat Reader,
Microsoft Windows compatible color monitor, keyboard and mouse,
recommended screen resolution: 1024 x 768 or higher.
A local drive or a central server with approximately 5,5 Mbytes of free space in
case you wish to install all manuals,
A DVD drive.
1.2 Software required
In order to work with the SIMATIC Manual Collection you will need:
- One of the following operating systems:
- Windows NT with Service Pack 6 or 6a
- Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2
- Windows XP Professional or Home Edition with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or
SP2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
Internet Explorer V 5.5 or higher in case you wish to carry out an online update
A program for unzipping zip files, in case you are using an operating system
other than Windows XP.

No special knowledge of the field of automation technology is required in order to
understand the Getting Started guide.
1.4 Required settings in Internet Explorer
The usage of cookies must be enabled in Internet Explorer, in order that online
updates can be carried out.
The method for enabling cookies is dependant on the version of Internet Explorer
used.

The SIMATIC Manual Collection has the following features:
It is embedded within a PDF based user interface and
is designed to be context sensitive.

2.3 Display the start / welcome page
Welcome page
The welcome page is displayed when the SIMATIC Manual Collection DVD is
started.
The welcome page contains buttons with links to the home pages and the
individual languages.
Home page
When the language has been selected, the home page is displayed.

3.1 Quick navigation
General
Quick navigation actively guides you to technical documentation sources for the
individual SIMATIC products and SIMATIC systems.
Instructions for working with the quick navigation tool
1. From the home page, click on Quick navigation.
Result: The SIMATIC Guide Technical Documentation is opened.
2. Select the required SIMATIC product, such as SIMATIC decentral periphery.
Result: You will be shown a selection of manuals available for the selected
SIMATIC product.
3. Now select the relevant manual in the required language, e.g. ET 200M.
Result: The overview list for the selected SIMATIC product is shown in the
display area.
4. Now select the relevant manual from the overview list, e.g. ET 200M.
Result: The corresponding PFD file manual will open.

3.2 Full text search
General
The full text search function enables you to search the index for individual words, a
number, a term or a string of characters. You can extend your search by means of
wild cards (*, ?).


Note
Possible problems with the full text search after an online update without
the index file.
The full text search only covers the manuals from the initial installation. If a
manual has been changed after an online update, the full text search will still find
the manual, however the search results cannot be displayed correctly.
Instructions for working with the full text search function
1. From the home page, click on Full text search.
Result: The Search PDF window appears.
2. Enter the required search phrase, such as e.g. S7.
Tip: The following options will help you to define your search criteria more
precisely:
- Full word: ensures that only the full word as entered in the text field will be
searched for.
- Upper / lower case: ensures that only search results matching the case of
the search criteria will be returned.
- Book mark: ensures that both the book mark window and the text of the
document will be searched.
- Comments: ensures that both the text in the comments and the text of the
document will be searched.
3. Select the required option and click Search.
Result: The Results window pops up and the documents corresponding to
your search criteria will be listed, according to their degree of relevance.

Instructions for displaying search results
1. Select the required document, such as e.g. CFC_S7.
2. Doubleclick the relevant document.
Result: The corresponding PFD file manual will open.
You now have the following possibilities:
Display additional locations.
Display additional search results, as the Results window remains open.
Click the New search button to begin a new search.
Instructions for beginning a new search
1. From the home page, click on Full text search.
Result: The Search PDF window appears. The window contains the search
criteria from the previous search.
2. Click on the New search button.
Result: The search criteria will be erased and you can begin a new search.

3.3 Document overview lists
Structure of the overview lists
The overview lists contain a data record with at least the following data items for
each document:

Attribute Definition
Title Title of the manual
Edition (version) of the documentation, double-digit e.g. 02 Edition
Date of publication, format MM / JJ
Manual class Organization of the documentation in document-classes.
Order number of the individual manual Order number
Order number of the documentation packet
File Name of the file
New / changed Identification of changes:
New manual
New edition
Instructions for launching overview lists
1. Click on the bookmark of the required SIMATIC system in the structure tree,
such as e.g. Automation systems.
2. Select the required SIMATIC product, such as e.g. decentral periphery >
ET 200M.
Result: The overview list for the selected SIMATIC product is shown in the
display area.
3. Select the required documentation from the overview list and click on the
corresponding line such as e.g. ET 200M.
Result: The corresponding PFD file manual will open.

Tip: You have the following possibilities to return to the overview list:
Use the right mouse key and select "Previous page from the drop-down
menu.
Click the " Previous page" button.

3.4 Integrated links to updated documentation
on the Internet
Requirements
In order to use the full functionality of the SIMATIC Manual Collection, ensure that
an Internet connection can be made from your computer.
Please find the requirements and settings for this in chapter 1.

General
If you wish to check if a manual has been updated in the meantime, you can look it
up on the Internet.
You will find a bookmark to the updated manuals for every SIMATIC system
in the SIMATIC Manual Collections structure tree.
This integrated bookmark will take you directly to the Internet Website.
Here you can display specific documentation for the selected product group which
has changed since the last edition of the SIMATIC Manual Collection.
Instructions for accessing the updated manuals
1. Click on the bookmark of the required SIMATIC system in the structure tree,
such as e.g. Automation systems.
2. The last bookmark in the structure tree is:
Updated manuals on the Internet
3. Click: Updated manuals on the Internet
Result: You will be taken to the Internet Website where the updated manuals
are displayed.
4. Check if an update is available for the required manual. Where necessary,
download the PDF file.

3.4.2 Link to download of GSD files
General
If you require a GSD file, you can check if an appropriate file is available for your
application on the Internet. If necessary, you can download the file.
You will find the link in the structure tree under Decentral periphery.
Instructions for accessing GSD files
1. Click on the following bookmark in the structure tree:
Automation systems > Industrial automation systems SIMATIC >
Decentralised periphery.
2. The last bookmark in the structure tree under Decentralised periphery is:
Link to download of GSD files.
3. Click: Link to download of GSD files.
Result: You will be taken to the Internet Website where the updated GSD files
are displayed.
4. If an appropriate GSD file for your application is available, you can download it.

3.5 Online update
Requirements
In order to use the full functionality of the SIMATIC Manual Collection, ensure that
an Internet connection can be made from your computer.
Please find the requirements and settings for this in chapter 1.
Update mechanism
You can update your SIMATIC Manual Collection free of charge for one year after
purchase.
The advantage of an online update is that you can quickly update your computer
with the latest documentation editions.
An Internet update package is made available several times per quarter. You can
download this package and integrate it into your SIMATIC Manual Collection.
A special bookmark is available at the end of the structure tree for the purpose of
carrying out online updates.


Note
The online update will replace all manuals where a newer version is contained
within the update package.
If you still require the old manuals, you must copy them into a different directory
before they are replaced.
Components of the update file
All files which have been updated.
All files which have been newly published.
All updated overview lists.
3.5.1 Online update options
You have the possibility to download two zip files:
Zip file which contains the updated manuals.
Zip file which contains the updated Index.


Note

3.5.2 Update
Requirements
You have installed the SIMATIC Manual Collection DVD onto a local drive or
central server.
Instructions for carrying out an online update
1. Under Online update In the structure tree, click on:
- Update
Result: You will now be in the Internet. Here you are offered a list of available
updates.
2. In order to load the updated manuals, load all PDF files containing update
packages (zip file) one after the other, which have not been downloaded from
the Internet onto your hard disk.
3. In order to load the updated Index, load the latest update package Index (zip
file) from the Internet onto your hard disk.
4. Unpack the zip files in the following directory on your hard disk:
[Manual Collection installation directory]\English\Manual
5. Replace the existing manuals with the newly downloaded manuals.
6. Replace the existing Index with the newly downloaded Index.
7. Move the Start_e.pdf file to a higher level into the directory Englisch and
replace the old file Start_e.pdf.

Result:
The old manuals will be replaced with the current editions.
All changed PDF files will be replaced.
The new PDF files will be integrated.
The overview lists will be replaced.
The update is completed.

No new update available
In the event that no new update is available on the Internet:
You will receive a notification informing you that currently no new updates for
the Manual Collection are available.
You can download previous updates again.
All previously undertaken updates are listed with their relevant dates.
3.6 Short descriptions
General
Short descriptions contain advertising information regarding our SIMATIC products.
You will find the short descriptions at the end of the structure tree.
Instructions for accessing the short descriptions
1. From within the structure tree, click on: Short descriptions.
Result:
- The SIMATIC products appear in the structure tree.
- The overview lists appear in the display area.
2. Select the required SIMATIC product, such as SIMATIC decentral periphery.
Result: The overview lists with the relevant descriptions appear.
3. Select the required documentation from the overview list and click on the
corresponding line such as e.g. ET 200M.
Result: The PFD file manual corresponding to the short description will open.

Tip: You have the following possibilities to return to the overview list:
Use the right mouse key and select "Previous page from the drop-down
menu.
Click the " Previous page" button.

4 Further Information
4.1 New start
4.1.1 New start with inserted DVD
Proceed as follows:
1. Open the Explorer.
2. Go to directory: "ManCol_DVD_MMYY" and doubleclick file: "start.pdf".
Result: The welcome page appears together with the language selection.
4.1.2 Starting from a local drive
If the SIMATIC Manual Collection data is stored on a local drive or central server,
you will have considerably faster access to the data.
Local storage is especially practical if you intend to work intensively with the
SIMATIC Manual Collection.
Proceed as follows:
1. Mark the entire SIMATIC Manual Collection directory or just the required
language.
2. Copy the selected content onto a local drive or central server.
3. If you have only selected and copied the required language from the DVD,
please copy the following directory additionally: "\manuals". It contains the
short descriptions.
Result: You have now stored all selected data on the local drive or central
server.

4.2 Increase access speeds
You can increase access speeds to the electronic manuals by copying the PDF
files from the DVD to the hard drive.
Depending on drive, you can achieve an increase in access speed of factor
10 to 60.
Tip:
In order to not noticeably impede the performance of your workstation, you should
keep the number of opened files to a minimum.
4.3 How to keep the structure tree open when a manual is
open
Deactivate the following option in Adobe Acrobat Reader:
Open cross-document links in same window.
In Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 you will find this setting under:
Edit > Preferences > General
Result:
Every document will be opened in its own window.
If you now navigate back to the home page, the structure tree will remain open in
the same place from which you opened the previous document.

Adobe Reader
The Reader is a free item of software for viewing, navigating and printing PDF files.
The Reader can be freely re-distributed where necessary, in so far as the general
licensing regulations of the manufacturer are observed.
Automation System
An automation system in the context of SIMATIC S7 is a programmable logic
controller.
Cookie
Cookies are small text information files used on the Internet that serve to identify
you as a user of a Website on subsequent visits. The cookie stores information
during the visit to the site on local storage media. The process occurs in the
background. When required, the information can be read by the site and displayed.
GSD file
The characteristics of a PROFINET gate are written in a GSD file (General Station
Description), which contains all necessary information for the configuration. Just as
in PROFIBUS, you can integrate a PROFINET device in STEP 7 using a GSD file.
In PROFINET IO, the GSD file is in XML format. The structure of the GSD file
complies with ISO 15734, the worldwide standard for device descriptions. In
PROFIBUS, the GSD file is in ASCII format.
