MiCOM P921, P922 and P923

Voltage and frequency relays
Introduction
Part of the new MiCOM range, the
P921, P922 and P923 relays
provide reliable and high
performance voltage and frequency
protection.
Their versatility of application and
the association of protection
functions with automation, control
and measurement functions, as well
as maintenance reduction, provide
an optimal and innovative solution.
Application
Two voltage ranges are available
to cover the large variety of control
applications: reference voltage
levels supported by MiCOM P921,
P922 and P923 relays from
57V to 480V.
Because of the 3 independent
phase overvoltage and phase
undervoltage thresholds, MiCOM
P921, P922 and P923 relays are
able to provide effective voltage
protection: a typical application
might be the protection of motors
and generators. The configurable
detection logic (AND, OR) can also
indicate the absence of voltage,
when the undervoltage protection
is used.
The 3 zero-sequence overvoltage
thresholds can be applied :
to detect earth faults at the
neutral point of generators, with
MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays being insensitive to the
3rd harmonic
to detect earth faults for neutral
electrical systems which are very
impedant or isolated, whilst
avoiding the expensive use and
installation of core balance CTs.
The negative sequence overvoltage
protection provided by the MiCOM
P922 and P923 relays is designed
to detect unbalanced conditions: it
could therefore be used for motor
starters, in which any unbalance
will lead to overheating and
damage.
The MiCOM P922 and P923
relays integrate 6 frequency
thresholds which are used for
automated load shedding/load
restoration.

MiCOM P923
In addition, the MiCOM P923
relays provide 6 thresholds of
instantaneous rate of change of
frequency (df/dt) or average
measurements over a settable time
interval.
These elements are suitable for
severe disturbances accelerate the
load shedding when this operation,
in small step, may not be sufficient
to bring the system back to normal
operating condition.
In order to adapt the protection
scheme to each application,
programmable logic equations are
available and allow the
combination of MiCOM P921,
P922 and P923 internal protection
functions of relays with external
signals from other protection
devices on the system. This
flexibility reduces both external
wiring and the use of auxiliary
relays.
The MiCOM P921, P922 and
P923 relays primarily provide
fast and accurate protection
for use in numerous
applications. In addition, they
offer the following benefits:

Protection functions
Configuration depending
on the VT
MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays can be used in the following
configurations:
"3 phase-neutral VTs" or
"3 phase-neutral VTs and
1residual VT":
The voltage protection element
can therefore operate either from
measured phase-to-neutral
voltages, or from phase-to-phase
voltages which have been
internally calculated by the relay.
Zero-sequence overvoltage
protection will always be
available, the presence of the
residual VT is designed to
display the true RMS value of the
residual voltage,
"3 phase-phase VTs and
1 residual VT" or
"2 phase-phase VTs and
1 residual VT":
The voltage protection element
can only operate from measured
phase-to-phase voltages. If the
residual VT is not connected, the
zero-sequence overvoltage
protection will not be available.
The MiCOM P922-G is only
designed to operate with the
"3 phase-neutral VTs" or
"3 phase-phase VTs"
configuration.
Voltage protection
For each function listed below, an
instantaneous signal and a time-
delayed signal is available for
each threshold.
For time-delayed signals, the first
threshold of each function ("low
threshold") offers the choice
between a definite timer and an
inverse timer, to which a reset timer
can be assigned. The other
thresholds only have one definite
timer.
In the case of the MiCOM P922-G,
all thresholds have definite time-
delays and the only detection logic
is the "OR" logic.
Under/Overvoltage (27/59)
Three thresholds are available for
each function: each one can be
independently activated or
deactivated.
If a threshold is activated, it can be
configured to detect:
an overvoltage on the 3
simultaneous phases (logic
"AND") or on at least one of the
phases (logic "OR") for the
"Overvoltage" function
an undervoltage on the 3
simultaneous phases (absence of
voltage with the "AND" logic) or
on at least one of the phases
(logic "OR") for the
"Undervoltage" function
The MiCOM P923 and P923
relays provide a programmable
hysteresis
(drop- out / pick-up ratio) as a
percentage of the under voltage
and over voltage settings values.
The MiCOM P922 provides a
settable under voltage Block of
all the protection and control
elements based on the
frequency.
Zero-sequence overvoltage
(59N)
Three thresholds are available:
each one can be independently
activated or deactivated.
Depending on the VT configuration,
MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays will operate from the zero-
sequence voltage, which is
calculated internally, or from the
residual voltage, which is measured
directly.
Negative sequence
overvoltage (47) -
MiCOM P922 (S version)
and P923
Two thresholds are available: each
one can be independently activated
or deactivated.
This function is based on the
negative-sequence component of
the voltage, which is calculated
internally and displayed on the
screen of the front panel: It is
designed to detect any voltage
unbalance condition.
Positive sequence
undervoltage (27D) -
MiCOM P922 (S version)
and P923
Two thresholds are available: Each
one can be independently activated
or deactivated.
This function is based on the
positive phase sequence
component of the voltage, which is
calculated internally.
Frequency protections
Frequency protection functions are
inhibited from a certain level of the
measured secondary voltage
(adjustable level on G version).
Under/Overfrequency
(81U/81O) - MiCOM P922
and P923
Six thresholds are available: Each
one can be configured to detect an
under or overfrequency within the
range [fn - 10Hz, fn + 10Hz],
where fn is the nominal frequency
selected (50Hz or 60Hz).
A definite timer is assigned to each
threshold.
Rate of Change of Frequency
(81R)- MiCOM P923
Six threshold are available: Each
can be configured independently
within the range
[-10 Hz/s, +10 Hz/s].
These functions are based on the
calculation of the instantaneous
rate of change of frequency over a
settable integration time (number of
cycles).

ligure 4 : Iogic equations
Programmable logic equations
Two programmable logic equations
(AND) are available with
MiCOM P921 and P922 relays.
Four programmable logic equations
(AND) are available with
MiCOM P923.
A pick-up timer and a drop-off
timer can be assigned to each
equation.
These equations are not defined in
graphic form, they can thus be
calculated directly from the front
panel, thereby avoiding the need
for dedicated software.
Inputs/Outputs/
Programmable LEDs
All logic inputs, output contacts
(excluding the RL0 changeover
output contact, dedicated to the
"relay failed" function) and the 4
LEDs of the MiCOM P921, P922
and P923 relays can be
programmed.
This affects in particular all logic
signals (instantaneous, time-
delayed) in the relays which can be
combined on the different output
contacts and LEDs.
Blocking logic
When MiCOM relays are used in
electrical systems, the management
of the different protection modules
must take surrounding devices into
consideration. MiCOM P921, P922
and P923 relays supply
configurable logic inputs, which,
when active, can "freeze" the
associated protection timers and
fault is still present if the after drop-
off can re-impose the initial value.
Output contact latching (86)
Each output contact can be
programmed to be latched once the
fault has cleared: The latched
contacts can be reset either directly
on the front panel of the relay,
locally (RS232 port) or remotely
(RS485 port).
Setting groups for protection
functions
The MiCOM P922 and P923 relays
have two independent setting
groups, which are used to adapt
the protection functions to different
operating conditions. The two
groups can be switched by
activating a dedicated logic input,
or by the operator via the front
panel, or locally (RS232 port) or
remotely (RS485 port). Typically,
these two setting groups can be
used to switch from GTE type 1.4
to GTE type 1.1 for the
MiCOM P922 G version.
The switch from one setting group
to another will only take effect if no
protection or automation functions
are running, to prevent unwanted
tripping.
Measurements
In accordance with the
configuration of the VTs connected
to MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays, the following values will be
displayed as true RMS values on
the back-lit screen:
phase-to-neutral voltages Ua, Ub, Uc
phase-to-phase voltages Uab,
Ubc, Uca
residual voltage Vo
frequency.
In addition, the MiCOM P922
(S version) and P923 relays
calculate the following values
internally:
positive sequence voltage
negative sequence voltage
peak values of phase-to-neutral
or phase-to-phase voltages
rolling values of phase-to-neutral
or phase-to-phase voltages
All measurements are available
locally or remotely.
Logs and records
All event, fault and disturbance
records are time-stamped to 1ms by
the internal real time clock.
In the event of a loss of auxiliary
power, a lithium battery is used to
save the records, the date and the
time. Checked at regular intervals,
the battery can be easily accessed
from the front panel if it has to be
replaced.
Event records
Any change of state of logic inputs,
output contacts or protection
functions will be recorded in the
non-volatile memory of the
MiCOM P922 and P923 relays,
with a maximum of 75 events.
When the memory is full, the oldest
events will be deleted, which will
increase the storage capacity for
more recent events.
Each event can either be displayed
locally using the MiCOM S1
support software (RS232 port) or
remotely (RS485 port).
Fault records
The MiCOM P922 and P923 relays
can store the last 5 faults that have
occurred in non-volatile memory.
Each record provides the following
information:
date and time of fault
origin of fault (undervoltage, etc.)
faulted phase(s)
magnitude of the quantity which
lead to the fault
magnitude of phase-to-neutral or
phase-to-phase voltages
magnitude of the zero-sequence
voltage (if available)
All this information can be restored
locally, using the MiCOM S1
setting software (RS232 port), or
remotely (RS485 port).
Disturbance records
Five disturbance records, each
lasting 2.5 seconds, can be stored
in non-volatile memory by MiCOM
P922 and P923 relays. The
sampling frequency is fixed at 32
samples per cycle. The mechanism
that triggers the recording can be
configured: Instantaneous signals,
time-delayed signals, or activation
of a dedicated logic input.
The various recordings can be
restored locally (RS232 port) or fed
back remotely (RS485 port).
Frequency disturbance
records
One frequency disturbance record,
lasting 20 secs can be stored in
non-volatile memory by the MiCOM
P923 relay. The sampling frequency
is fixed at 1 sample per cycle. The
mechanism that triggers the
recording can be configured:
instantaneous or time delayed
tripping, activation of a dedicated
logic input or time delayed logic
equation signal.
The various recordings can be
restored locally (RS232 port) or fed
back remotely (RS485 port).
6
Disturbance Record Analysis
ligure 3: Disturbance Pecord Analysis
Fully WINDOWS compatible
(98, NT), the MiCOM S1 setting
software has been designed so that
all relay settings can be prepared
in the office ("off-line" mode) and
the configuration file created can
then be loaded on-site.
The different information stored by
each MiCOM relay (measurements,
event records, disturbance records,
parameters, etc.) can also be
retrieved by the software (storage
on PC, printout of various files, etc.)
and used on-site or processed at a
later date.
7
Circuit breaker
monitoring and control
Monitoring the position of
the circuit breaker
The use of logic inputs and
programmable LEDs enables the
position of the circuit breaker to be
displayed on the front panel.
Circuit breaker control
With MiCOM P921, P922 and
P923 relays, the circuit breaker can
be controlled locally via logic
inputs (AUX1 and AUX2), with
local or remote communication: the
opening and closing commands
will therefore activate the
programmed output contacts.
Circuit breaker maintenance -
MiCOM P922 and P923
In addition to protecting and
controlling the electrical network,
the MiCOM P922-P923 relays will
provide preventive and curative
maintenance of the circuit breakers.
The maintenance programs can be
adapted in accordance with the
data supplied by the relay.
The MiCOM P922 and P923
relays control the opening and
closing time of the circuit breaker,
and monitor the number of
operations carried out. An alarm is
triggered as soon as the maximum
opening or closing time, or the
maximum permitted number of
operations is exceeded.

Communications
Two communication ports are
available on MiCOM P921, P922
and P923 relays: A rear port
(RS485) for remote communication
and a front port (RS232) for local
communication.
Remote communication
MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays support MODBUS,
IEC 60870-5-103 or Courier
protocols.
They transmit to the local
monitoring system (MiCOM S10
for instance) or to the SCADA,
settings, measurements and alarms
as well as all records. All
communication settings (address,
rate, parity, etc.) can be
programmed by the user via the
user interface. A communication
failure does not affect the MiCOM
relay protection functions.
Local communication
The RS232 port on the front panel
of MiCOM P921, P922 and P923
relays has two functions:
to download a software version
to the relay (upgrade, change
the language setting, modify the
remote communication protocol,
etc.)
to connect a PC which has the
