Weekly Headlines

Hannah to arrive on 9
th
August
Jerra Rotarys 6
th
international exchange student will be
arriving on 9
th
August. As this is a Saturday we expect we
will have a good size welcoming party at the airport.
Hannah, from Germany, is very excited about her exchange
and has dreamed of coming to Australia since she was quite
young. She will be leaving behind her parents and younger
brother to come and live with us for 12 months, through to
July next year. We will of course adopt her as our own and
soon have her speaking like an Aussie.
Hannah is currently getting to know a little bit about her
counsellors (Peter and Sue) and her host families (Bruce and Liz, Glenn and Glenda, David
and Anne, and Paul and Sue) through email exchange. She is also in touch with Jasmin,
our last exchange student, who in Hannahs words has told me a lot of great things
about her (and my) families and Jerrabomberra. So hopefully the scary aspect of
travelling across the world and being away from home for 12 months will be significantly
softened by the knowledge she is currently collecting.
Joker Goes Off
After 38 weeks of disappointed punters, the joker finally went off this week with Terry
Spencer reaping the dividends. See inside for further details.

Editors Note
Readers will note a few
changes to the formatting of
this weeks newsletter. This is
in part me having a bit of
creative fun with the layout,
and in part an attempt to
respond to some suggestions
that have been sent through.
It is always good to get
feedback, as that is how I
know the Jerraganda is
getting read and is
appreciated.
One change you will have
observed is we are enhancing
the content and format to be
more of a weekly Newsletter;
still incorporating the weekly
meeting summary, but also
aiming to add additional
content of interest to
members and our other
readers.
So if you have any content
you feel would be of interest
to members, why not send it
in. There may even be a prize
at the end of the year for the
best contribution.

Weekly Meeting Summary

Meeting number 800 10 July 2014
In this weeks meeting reports we are able to bring to readers some pictures (cartoons) of the Directors rarely seen
before in print.
Meeting commenced at 6.32pm
Welcome:
President Paul welcomed
everyone to the second
meeting of the 2014-15 Rotary
year, and to the 800
th
meeting
of the club since it
commenced.
President Paul invited Chris to
give the Charge to Australia, and Glenda to do the toast
to Rotary International. Glenda, not being able to think
of any other international clubs, once again toasted
Glasgow.

Apologies:
Mez acted as Attendance
Officer and reported apologies
from Rebecca, Robert, Anton
(overseas) and Jon (overseas),
and a late apology from Sue J.
It was also noted that David S,
David B, and Lizzie are on LoA.
Reminder: Members who are unable to
attend meetings should provide apologies to
the attendance officer.
From the Desk of the President:
President Paul advised that he was hoping to induct Marie-Claire at this weeks
meeting; however she has fallen victim to the flu and could not attend. As such this
event will now take place at next weeks meeting.
Not wanting to miss out on doing a
presentation, President Paul was pleased
to invite Past President Paul to step
forward. President Paul then advised members that PP Pauls
donations over the years to the Rotary Foundation had reached
US$1000 and as such he is awarded a sapphire pin to his Paul
Harris Fellow. President Paul then presented PP Paul with the PHF
Sapphire Pin. (See Photo)
President Paul continued by provided members with a brief prcis
of the Board meeting held on Wednesday 9 July, with two points
of particular note:
The Board unanimously determined to offer Anne Davis
Honorary Membership for the 2014-2015 year
The Board determined that as a future policy of the Club,
members who have advised they will attend an event and
withdraw as short notice, when the club has already committed to costs, will be liable to pay any costs
incurred. For example with the recent Mystery Tour 3 members cancelled on the day of the tour, and
were happy to still pay for their places even though they did not attend.

Now that I am finally in charge Yes I am in charge!! should I tell
the members what my plans are for the year? Mmm let me think..
Nah, I will keep them guessing.

Report: Secretary
Glenn is back with us for the
foreseeable future. And he
was ecstatic that
he actually received a
hardcopy letter!! The letter
from Menslink was a
thankyou for the clubs
donation of $500 as part of our disbursements at the
end of PP Pauls year.
Not quite a letter, but a nice postcard, was also
received from Bruce and Liz who continue to enjoy
their holiday in the US.
Glenn then presented Mez with a new club badge.
Apparently due to the length of Mezs name, and all
the post-nominals and other titles that Mez wished to
have included, the standard club badge was just too
small. So Glenn, with an appropriate sense of
humour, had a special badge made just for Mez.
(See photos)

Report: Treasurer
Jon is away on a much deserved
overseas holiday until 12 August. In his
absence David Bailey is continuing to
act as Treasurer, despite being on LoA
himself. (What a player)

Pres Paul noted that David had
attended the Board meeting on Wednesday 8
th
and presented
to the Board the Cash Disbursements and Cash Receipts for
the final quarter of the 2013-14 Rotary Year. The Board had
approved the statements.

Report: Community Service:
As Jan had given a summary of
her plans last week, she had
nothing new to contribute this
week. However she did
confirm the Fun Run is a
definite for the 1 November.
(See Program section later in
this edition.)

Report: International and Foundation

Chilly was absent.

Rumour has it he could not
decide which hat he would wear,
so had to stay at home.
Report: Club Service:
Mez advised that the program for the year is starting to take shape. Members should keep
an eye on the Jerraganda for updates. (See Program Section later in this edition)
From a membership and communication perspective the Board has given in principal
approval for research into the acquisition of a professional display stand within a cost
range of $1000-$1500. The stand will be used for displays of material promoting Rotary
activities at various events.
Mez reminded all members that the Jerraganda is taking on a new look with more news
items in addition to the meeting records. As such the newsletter will be a key method of
communication with members and all should ensure they read it each week.
Report: Youth and Vocation Service
Peter was pleased to advise that our nomination for outgoing Youth exchange, William
Hanson, had passed through District selection successfully. William is now scheduled to
head off to the East Coast of the US in January 2015 for his 12 month exchange. William
will be attending a club meeting in the near future to meet members.
And on the inbound side of things, we will be hosting Hannah Gilles from Germany from
the 9
th
August. Hannah is naturally excited about her coming stay with us, and is
communicating with the host families to prepare herself. She is also in touch with Jasmin who is giving her
many tips and background information on Jerrabomberra and our club.
We also have a student attending the NYSF District selection on 26/27 July. Peter also reminded members that
in January we will once again hope to home host a few NYSF attendees on a Sunday (date to be advised).
RYPEN will be on again in September and RYLA in January. So if any members know of any suitable candidates,
please pass information to Peter.
General Business:

There were no items of general business.

(Maybe everyone is waiting for the President to announce the plan??)

Special Speaker Presentation Our very own Glenn Wahlert on ClubRunner

After overcoming a few technical challenges, Glenn gave members a very
interesting insight into the workings of the clubs website and ClubRunner
software. Our Website has been improved significantly since we determined
to exploit the advantages that come with ClubRunner. The software is
specifically designed for Rotary clubs to run their websites and conduct club
business. Our web address is www.jerrarotary.org.au
Glenn explained that while we have the public website working well we
need more current content from Directors and members to make the site
more interesting and dynamic. We also now need to start having members
use the site more as a club resource. Glenn showed members how to log on
and update their member profiles and personal information, and suggested
anyone who experiences difficulties simply gives him a call.
The site software enables the club to store business records, generate emails (if members keep their info up-to-
date) and many other club administration activities, which we will learn about in the future.
Market Master:
Anton has unfortunately had to make a trip back to Austria at short notice so was not
available to brief on the Markets.
In his absence, the secretary reminded members (on behalf of the acting treasurer) that
when reporting and banking money from the markets it was important to include within the
reference a breakdown of the takings by Tables, Bags and Water. This is because the monies
are allocated differently within the clubs accounts. It is suggested the reference should be
as follows Markets [date] T:$120 B:$130, W:$32. The bank is happy to take a single
deposit with this type of reference. Also please remember to always leave the $20 float
(with some $1 coins) in the cash box. (Some naughty people have been forgetting!!)
Joker:
Chris delivered the joke of the week (involving a priest
a rabbi and a car!). Pam then ran the evenings joker.
President Paul drew ticket number D90 which was held
by Terry. Pam then presented the 14 remaining cards
to Terry and he successfully picked the Joker. To
Terrys delight, but much to the dismay of other
members who were hoping for new shoes. The Acting
Treasurer has advised that Terry will be receiving $xxx
as his prize.
Although consideration was given to calling in ASADA for a full enquiry
into joker fixing and use of mind enhancing x-ray vision drugs, it was
decided we should not wait for 2 years for the result, and that if Terry
provides wine for next weeks meeting he can keep his prize !!
So a new pack of cards will be in play next week and back to 1 in 52
chances of the Joker to be drawn by the winning ticket holder.
Terry contemplating if he might
win the Joker after dinner?

6

SGT Fines:
This week Glenda stepped up as the Fines Master and ably extracted $38.30 from those in
attendance. Particularly vulnerable on the night was Terry, who arrived late from a
business meeting in a suit and tie, and without a badge which he misplaced at the
changeover. That was about four fines just for Terry. Having just won the joker, he was
however well placed to pay up.

Attendance:
Stand in attendance officer Mez, reported that 15 members were in attendance, plus
Hon Member Alex, Supporter Vera and soon to be member Marie-Claire who although
sick with the flu, dragged herself from her sickbed to pay for her meal and give late
apologies. Mez calculated that with the LoAs for members overseas and make-ups, the
attendance figure for the night was probably around 80%. However she felt that
discretion should allow the inclusion of several meetings during the week on Rotary
business, by Board and Committee members. As such with some creative accounting
Mez raised the final attendance figure to 95%. In response President Paul once again offered Port and Baileys
for the enjoyment of all at the end of the meeting.

Meeting 800 Closed at 8.05pm followed by fellowship and consumption of the Presidents Port/Baileys.

Weekly Market Report 12 July 2014

This weeks report submitted by Chris Hunter
It was a very cold and very windy day at the markets. Drivers were
erratic and obviously believe that no exit means please enter.
Many a driver claimed they let me last week. Chris advised that she
came close to screaming if she had heard the excuse many more times. Other than the drivers, everything else
was good, although crowds were down a bit, as reflected in the takings. The most commonly asked question at
the front of house was where are the ATMs?. [Remember the advice from last weeks Jerraganda that the
ATMs were permanently relocated as from this week in an attempt to improve patron flow through the
market].

Caption Competition

This week two members were captured deep in conversation (and Cathy
managed to get back into photo bombing again).
A small prize is on offer for the best caption received by the editor by
Wednesday 16 July 12 noon.
So readers get your thinking caps on and see what you can come up with. Results will be included in next
weeks Newsletter.

Over 100 Rotary Clubs from Coogee to Canberra, from Parramatta to Pambula,
from Liverpool to Jerrabomberra and so many more will come together at
the National Convention Centre in Canberra from 14-16 November.
If you have attended a District conference previously you will know of the
valuable experience gained from such events. If you have not had the
opportunity to attend, then this year should be the year you go.
Take advantage of the conference being close by in Canberra, and build your
Rotary knowledge while enjoying the fellowship of other Rotarians from both
our own District 9710 and District 9675.
Reserve the dates now and make plans to learn, be inspired, network, enjoy the
fellowship of like-minded professionals and most importantly have fun over the
three days. Lets have a big turn out from Jerrabomberra Rotary.
Keep an eye on the District Conference website for updates due towards the end
of July.

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary
Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the
joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter
President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was
chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in
numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at
the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for
the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the
winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The
design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent
to the Community Centre.
We continue to be a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and
internationally. Our motto is Doing Good and Having Fun

Dont forget to let the editor know if you have any
constructive suggestions for the enhancement of the
Jerraganda.
