You are now part of the Sooner
family and beginning a new adventure
at a pacesetter university with an
outstanding and diverse Greek
system. While academics will, of
course, be the major focus of your
undergraduate years, participation in
Greek life can be an integral part of
a complete educational experience
preparing you for your personal, social
and professional life. Your experiences
as a member of one of our sorority
chapters will provide a framework for
achievement and strong personal value
development that may be applied to
your academic studies. Community service, academic
support, campus involvement, multicultural activities and
leadership development are just a few of the opportunities
provided by the OU Greek system. The University of Oklahoma is
a special place where special things happen every day. It is
enriched by the many contributions of the members of our
outstanding sororities. I hope you will consider sharing in this
life-changing experience. Along with your degree, your Greek
experience will last long beyond your undergraduate years.

On behalf of the OU Greek community
and the Offce of Fraternity & Sorority
Student Life, I would like to extend
congratulations on your acceptance to
the University of Oklahoma. The Offce
of Fraternity & Sorority Student Life,
which is composed of four full-time
professional staff members, is located
in Oklahoma Memorial Union
and provides oversight and guidance
to the fraternities and sororities currently recognized at OU.
More signifcantly, our offce serves as a liason between faculty,
alumni advisers, national offces and parents; develops
values-based leadership development programming; provides
training in areas such as chapter operations, risk management,
health and safety, and membership recruitment; monitors the
academic performance of fraternity and sorority members; and
recognizes the positive achievements and contribution of
community members.
It is our hope that you fnd the Offce of Fraternity and
Sorority Student Life to be a resource, not only to you, but also to
your parents. If at any point you have questions
about Greek life or Fall Formal Sorority Recruitment, please do
not hesitate to contact us at (405) 325-3163. Again,
congratulations on your decision to attend the University of
Oklahoma, and we look forward to seeing you in August!

Welcome to the University of Oklahoma
Panhellenic Association. We are
excited that you have chosen to join
the Sooner family and thrilled that you
are considering joining one of the
largest student organizations on
campus! Established in 1906,
Panhellenic Greek life at the University
of Oklahoma is one of the oldest and
richest traditions that our campus
has to offer.
We, the OU Panhellenic Association, are the coordinating and
governing body of 11 National Panhellenic Conference sororities.
These chapters represent over 2,500 women, which makes us
the largest womens group at OU! Our membership numbers are
evidence of the strong infuence that sorority women have
on campus and within the community. We are extremely proud
of our Greek community and its outstanding reputation
locally and nationwide.
Each sorority at the University of Oklahoma has something
unique to offer. You will fnd that sorority women at OU are
well-rounded individuals who strive for excellence in scholarship,
campus involvement and community service. We hope that you
consider becoming a member of our Panhellenic family!

The National Panhellenic Conference, founded in 1902, is the encompassing organization for 26 national and international womens fra-
ternities and sororities. Its mission is to promote sorority unity. Today, there are NPC-affliated chapters on over 620 college campuses
in the United States and Canada. For more information about NPC, visit www.npcwomen.org.
When you join one of the 11 National Panhellenic Conference sororities at OU, you also become a member of the University of Okla-
homa Panhellenic Association. The Panhellenic Association serves as the governing body for the eleven NPC chapters and is run by
a student executive board. We promote equality and establish guidelines that govern membership, recruitment, social activities and
member responsibilities.

We, as undergraduate members of womens fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for
maintenance of fne standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering
fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as fraternity women,
stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity
and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by
which we strive to live.
The Panhellenic Association at the University of Oklahoma is the coordinating and governing body of 11 NPC-affliated
sororities on campus. The council is composed of eight executive board members. The Panhellenic Association strengthens
the Greek community and is responsible for promoting scholarship, philanthropy and safety for each sorority chapter, as well as
for the Greek community as a whole. The OU Panhellenic Association provides activities and programs throughout the year to
address current issues affecting collegiate women.

The Panhellenic delegates act as liaisons between their
individual chapters and the Panhellenic Executive
Council. By attending biweekly meetings, serving on
various committees and volunteering to step in when
needed, these 11 women play a vital role in
helping to direct our sororities toward working together
as a Panhellenic community.
The purpose of the Panhellenic Judicial Board is to
promote self governance, accountability, education and
due process with the Panhellenic Association. The
Panhellenic Judicial Board is composed of six members:
the vice president of judicial affairs, and fve additional
members who are responsible for upholding the
constitution, by-laws and recruitment rules of the OU
Panhellenic Association.
The Sucess by Six committee is composed of six
members: the Vice President of Community Relations, a
co-committee chair and four additional members who
join together in order to promote the Panhellenic-wide
philanthropy, United Ways Success by Six program. The
committee meets on a biweekly basis to discuss and
organize a fall philanthropy project, which serves as the
fundraising highlight of the year. Along with planning
this event, the committee members promote and
encourage volunteering for the Success by Six program,
where Panhellenic women have the opportunity to
interact and mentor children in the Norman community
throughout the year.

PARENT PROFILE
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE BENEFIT YOU BELIEVE YOUR DAUGHTER HAS GAINED FROM HER SORORITY EXPERIENCE?
From the frst day of her freshman year, my daughter has had an immediate community and sense of belonging because of the
association with her new sorority. This helped make her transition to college life easier and less intimidating not to mention fun
and exciting due to the numerous organized activities! It was comforting for her to be part of a group from the start and know that
she had 70+ girls in her pledge class to make new friends. From there, it only got better. Over time, relationships deepened and
lifelong friendships formed. In addition, she received academic encouragement, mentoring and leadership opportunities for personal
development and growth beyond college. My daughter will be a senior this year and, looking back on her sorority experience, I am
so thankful she was part of the Greek system at OU because it has beneftted her in so many ways and has truly enriched her life.
WHAT ENCOURAGING WORDS OR ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE PARENTS OF PROSPECTIVE SORORITY MEMBERS?
The OU Greek system is one of the strongest in the country, so know that if your daughter chooses to go through recruitment, she
will be in good hands. Formal Recruitment, while it may seem overwhelming and scary at frst, is a fantastic opportunity for girls to
get a glimpse of sorority life and decide whether it is something they want to be a part of. The week-long process is fun and
informative but can also be very exhausting so my frst advice is to wear comfortable shoes! Secondly, there are 11 outstanding
sororities, all of which are strong nationally and provide equally valuable opportunities at OU, so encourage your daughter to be
open-minded, as this will help her have the most positive experience possible.
HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH YOUR DAUGHTER'S SORORITY?
Yes, it has been a wonderful experience for both of us, and actually the whole family. Her chapter has an active Parents' Club, as I
believe most do, which keeps us informed about various activities throughout the year that the women are involved in. The Parents'
Club also hosts numerous events, such as House Mother teas and open house lunches on Parents' Weekend, Dad's Day and Mom's
Weekend. Aside from all of that, the part I enjoy the most is spending time with my daughter at the sorority house and getting to
know the other chapter members. I am always so impressed by the outstanding caliber of young women!

HOW HAS JOINING A SORORITY
BENEFITTED YOU HERE AT OU?
Being in a sorority has engaged me in a part
of campus that I might not have been involved
with otherwise; it has introduced me to a
diverse group of girls from a variety of states,
different areas of study and backgrounds. I
have made strong relationships with many
that I have no doubt will be lifelong friends, I
have gained mentors who have been the best
resources since the beginning of my time here
at the University of Oklahoma, and I can't
imagine my college experience without them!
WHY SHOULD INCOMING STUDENTS
JOIN A SORORITY?
Sororities provide the greatest support
system, new experiences, lifelong memories
and friends. Joining a sorority will help you
build a stronger connection with the univer-
sity and enhance the time that you spend
here. Whether you're interested in leadership
positions, philanthropies or intramural sports,
sororities offer many ways to get involved and
have meaningful experiences while making
valuable friendships and connections along
the way!
WHAT ENCOURAGING WORDS OR
ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO
PROSPECTIVE SORORITY MEMBERS?
The most important thing is for you to be
yourself! At the end of the day, you'll want to
end up at the chapter that makes you feel the
most comfortable a place where you can be
yourself with people who will help shape you
into the best version of yourself (all the while
laughing, crying and everything in between).
You're looking for a place to call home for
longer than just four years so, during the
recruitment process, do not be afraid to ask
questions!
HOW HAS JOINING A SORORITY
BENEFITTED YOU HERE AT OU?
During my time at OU, being a part of
sorority has helped me fnd mentors and
my niche. Without the guidance and
encouragement from older members, I would
not be who I am today. Daily, I am challenged
by my sorority sisters to become the best
version of myself, and they are constantly
supporting me in all aspects of my life.
WHY SHOULD INCOMING STUDENTS
JOIN A SORORITY?
A sorority provides a family and a community
in which you can grow and fourish. When
studying for the MCAT this past January, there
was never a day without someone
encouraging me. Many of my sorority sisters
would write me notes and leave treats in my
room, and my phone was fooded with their
texts and phone calls flled with encourag-
ing words. This is just one example of how a
house can surround you with love and
encouragement during times of stress or
sadness. My sorority sisters have helped
me through my tears and cheered with me
through my successes!
WHAT ENCOURAGING WORDS OR
ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO
PROSPECTIVE SORORITY MEMBERS?
When things go differently than expected,
which they often will, do not get discouraged.
Freshman year is full of ups and downs but
look to those around you because they are
going through the same thing. Go into recruit-
ment with an open mind and give it time, and
you will not be disappointed. Being in a soror-
ity is an amazing experience. Let your house
enhance your university experience, and
you will get all that our wonderful
university has to offer.

THE PANHELLENIC GRADE-POINT AVERAGE IS CONSISTENTLY HIGHER THAN THE ALL-CAMPUS WOMEN GPA.
Greek chapters were founded on the principal of exceptional scholarship. Academic achievement is the foundation for our
future success, and the Panhellenic community is committed to creating an environment conducive to learning and to
attaining high academic goals. In fact, the all-sorority grade-point average has consistently been higher than the
all-undergraduate female average. The sorority experience will assist you and make the academic
transition from high school to college by providing the following:

One of the most gratifying aspects of sorority life is the sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with involvement in community service. Sorority
women recognize the need throughout the year to raise money and donate time for their special philanthropies and community service projects. The
ideals of most sororities are exemplifed through their service efforts. Sorority members donate thousands of hours and dollars to local and national
philanthropic organizations each year. Fundraising events and service projects help sorority members learn about their responsibility to the
community. In taking advantage of these opportunities, sorority members learn the joy that comes from giving of oneself to help others.

In addition to each chapters individual philanthropy events, OU Panhellenic Association organizes an annual event to beneft the

childcare at Early Bird sessions throughout the year. This Success by 6 program teaches parents how to promote brain
development in their children from birth until age 6 so that they are prepared when they begin school. Panhellenic women also
donate books to Success by 6, which are then distributed to children in Norman schools who may be receiving the frst book
theyve ever owned. Our women work together to foster unity among chapters and to enjoy the spirit of giving back.

and preparing student leaders for life after college is
one of the many goals of OU sororities. Whether at the
chapter level or beyond, a sorority will teach, encourage
and assist you in the development and refnement of your
leadership skills and the attainment of your goals.
If you wish to be involved on campus and desire real-life
opportunities to test and train your leadership skills, there
is no better way than becoming affliated with a sorority
at the University of Oklahoma. Fraternity and sorority
members are involved in more than 300 registered student
organizations and can be found on many committees that
shape campus life. At OU, to be Greek means to lead.

Being Greek also provides an invaluable network when
seeking employment and career opportunities. Greek
alumni understand the Greek experience of being both
an individual and a team player, the desire to excel both
in and out of the classroom, and the commitment to give
back to the community. Through interactions with Greek
alumni, you can begin building relationships that will help
you in the future.
11
Sororities were founded as social organizations. The ability
to function comfortably in a social environment will prove
almost as important as the ability to do so in a work
environment. Sorority chapters at the University of
Oklahoma provide a diverse selection of events that will
enrich your social life and take you beyond the daily routine
of class, working and studying. All of these events support
the goal of bringing members together to develop bonds of
friendship.
SISTERHOOD
Joining the Greek system is the beginning of a new
experience. One of the most enjoyable parts of joining
a sorority is making new friends and forming bonds that
will last long after college is over. You will not only learn to
live with others but, through sharing the same experiences,
environment and interests, you will develop a very special
closeness to those around you. Sisterhood means more than
wearing the same Greek letters, attending meetings and go-
ing to social events; it is about developing
camaraderie and a sense of belonging that you will carry
throughout the rest of your life.

Some chapters require a certain number of study hall hours
to be completed each week during your frst semester at OU.
Sororities also implement a number of educational programs to
assist new members in the academic transition from high school
to college.
As a new member, you will be required to attend weekly new
member meetings in addition to weekly chapter meetings. The
goal of these meetings is to teach new members about the
values, traditions and rituals of their sorority chapter.
Many chapters also require a certain number of community
service hours to be completed each semester. Sorority women
maintain a presence within the community by giving back
as often as possible.
Each Greek chapter enjoys serving its local and national
philanthropy and will host events each semester to raise
awareness and donations for the cause. New members are
invited to attend these events as a way to socialize within
the community while also helping a worthwhile cause.
In the spring, chapters host recruitment workshops to help their
new members prepare for next years Fall Formal
Recruitment. As a new member, you will be expected to
attend and participate in these events.
As a new member, you will be encouraged to participate
in campus- and Greek-wide events, such as University Sing,
Homecoming, Big Event, Soonerthon, Relay for Life, etc. These
events are not only fun but they also provide an opportunity
for you to meet other members of the Greek community.

SAFE BREAK
In March 2014, the OU Panhellenic Association hosted
its 10th Annual SafeBreak. This event is held each
spring to increase awareness about safety and smart
decision-making during Spring Break. Each year, we
dedicate the event to celebrating the life of Lisa Wieder,
a beloved member of the Panhellenic community and
Alpha Omicron Pi sisterhood at OU, who tragically
passed away during her Spring Break vacation in 2004.
The purpose of SafeBreak is to remind students to have
fun but still be safe on Spring Break so that our
community never has to experience the tragedy of losing
a sister again. This event allows Panhellenic women to
understand the impact of their actions and the extreme
importance of safety.
Each year, Panhellenic Association hosts several
programming events for new members and all of the
Panhellenic community to educate our members on such
topics as leadership and risk management. The Panhellenic
Association also frequently partners with the other
Greek councils in order to encourage unity and diversity.

Sorority members have the opportunity to live in
beautiful, historic homes just off of campus. Chapter houses
are university-approved housing for upperclassmen* but are
privately owned and maintained by local or national sorority
alumnae house corporations.
Once accepted into sorority membership at OU, new
members remain in the residence halls. Typically,
sorority members do not move into the chapter facility
until their sophomore, junior, or senior year. Upperclassmen
members may have an obligation to live in the sorority house;
however, each sorority establishes its own regulations
regarding members living in or out of the chapter house.
Each sorority employs a full-time, live-in house director,
sometimes referred to as the house mother. The house
director oversees the daily operations of the chapter house.

Financial requirements are an important
consideration for women participating in
sorority recruitment, so it is important for
you to be as informed as possible
regarding the costs associated with Greek
life. If you accept an invitation to join a
sorority, you will enter into a fnancial
agreement and contract for housing and
dues during your college years.
Dues and fees vary for each chapter and
from year to year. It is important to note
that sorority costs may be more expensive
the frst year due to one-time expenses
and fees. It is also important to be aware
that some additional costs may arise
throughout the year, such as T-shirts, party
favors and pictures. Chapters may assess
additional fees during the year to cover
costs for special events or projects.
Financial obligations may be an important
topic for you to consider when visiting
chapters during recruitment. If you have
questions, a potential new member
should ask sorority members about the
fnances and payment options. Each
sorority sets its own fees and housing
costs as well as payment schedules.

Becoming a member of a sorority organization will enhance your
undergraduate experience and provide you with
countless opportunities to achieve your full potential. The Greek
community offers programs that foster academic, physical, mental
and spiritual growth. You will learn and be exposed to new experi-
ences that will prepare you well for the post-college years.
As I hope you will see, the sorority experience is
rewarding. Sorority life allows you to become an integral, con-
tributing part to both the campus community and the university
tradition that started in 1906.
I invite you to learn more about our 11 sorority
chapters and to participate in our recruitment programs.
By choosing to go through recruitment, you will open
yourself up to countless opportunities and you will meet and con-
nect with many unique individuals.
I encourage you to read this guide to help you better
understand what the Panhellenic community can offer and to help
you decide if going through recruitment is right for you.
Each of our sororities is unique and offers something
different to its members. I am confdent that you will fnd a soror-
ity that shares your ideals and values. There is truly a sorority for
everyone here at the University of Oklahoma,
so make the right choice now! Give the OU Greek system the
opportunity to share with you what it has to offer.

FORMAL RECRUITMENT WEEK
11 PARTIES ATTENDED
PARTY LENGTH: 25 MINUTES
WHAT TO EXPECT: This round of parties focuses on the importance and excitement of
Going Greek! During the frst two days of recruitment, you will visit all 11 sororities with
your recruitment walking group. You will be greeted at each house by door songs as you are
welcomed into the party. Feel free to ask questions of the members and to tell them a little bit
about yourself as you begin to get acquainted with each chapter.
WHAT TO WEAR: Recruitment T-shirts (provided by Panhellenic Association) and casual
shorts or skirt with tennis shoes, fip fops or sandals.
TIP: These frst two days are the longest and you will be doing a lot of walking, so you will
defnitely want to be dressed comfortably. Also, fnd a method that works for you to keep track
of all of the chapters that you visit.
MAXIMUM OF EIGHT PARTIES ATTENDED
PARTY LENGTH: 45 MINUTES
WHAT TO EXPECT: Community service is an important part of the overall Greek
experience, and Philanthropy Day will give you a glimpse into the philanthropic work that
sororities participate in at the local and national level. You will learn about the womens
involvement both on campus and within the community.
WHAT TO WEAR: Casual daytime dress, skirt or capris with comfortable sandals or fats.
NO T-shirts or heels.
TIP: Think about what philanthropies are important to you and what service projects you
were involved in during high school.
MAXIMUM OF FIVE PARTIES ATTENDED
PARTY LENGTH: 60 MINUTES
WHAT TO EXPECT: House Tour Day allows you the opportunity to see our beautiful
sorority homes. The parties on this day are informative and allow you more time for
conversations with the sorority women. You will be able to see frsthand the individuality and
spirit of each sorority, as well as experience the special bond of sorority sisterhood.
WHAT TO WEAR: A nicer sundress with wedges, heels or fats.
TIP: This is the day when you learn what each chapter is involved in on campus. Think hard
about what you would like to be involved in while at OU and whether this chapter could help
you reach your goals.
ROUND 1 - OPEN HOUSE DAYS
ROUND 2 - PHILANTHROPY DAY
ROUND 3 - HOUSE TOUR DAY
29
MAXIMUM OF TWO PARTIES ATTENDED
PARTY LENGTH: 75 MINUTES
WHAT TO EXPECT: This is the day to really focus on what you want to gain from joining a
sorority. An invitation to Preference Round means that the sorority is very interested in
having you become a member. The events focus on the core aspects of sorority life,
including sisterhood, friendship and ritual. This is your last chance to interact with
chapter members.
WHAT TO WEAR: Cocktail dress with heels, perhaps a dress that you would wear to an
evening wedding.
TIP: Look around the room at each of your events. Many of the other potential new members
present could be your pledge sisters, so make sure that you feel comfortable.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Formal Recruitment ends with Bid Day. Bid cards will be distributed
by the Recruitment Guides at 2 p.m. Families are welcome to join the new members at the
sorority house. A Panhellenic representative will be downstairs in Adams Center with a
complete list showing where each woman joined. (Parents, please do not go to your student's
room while the bids are being distributed by the Recruitment Guides.)
WHAT TO WEAR: Shorts and comfortable shoes. You will receive a T-shirt with your new
sorority letters when you receive your bid card.
TIP: This is a very exiting and long day. Make sure to get a good nights rest, as some
chapters will have a retreat planned immediately after Bid Day.

Potential new members must abide by the Membership Recruitment Guidelines published in the University of Oklahoma
Panhellenic Association Recruitment Manual as well as the NPC Unanimous Agreements.
A potential new member may not have guests (including family members) in her residence hall room from 8 p.m. on
Aug. 6, 2014 until after the distribution of bids on Aug. 12. All guests must be met in the lobby area of the
residence hall.
Potential new members participating in Formal Recruitment must wear the nametags provided by the Panhellenic
Executive Recruitment Team during all Formal Recruitment week activities.
Potential new members participating in Formal Recruitment must be in their own residence hall room every night by 11 p.m.
Potential new members participating in Formal Recruitment may not visit any fraternity chapter from August 6, 2014, through
noon on Aug.12, 2014. Fraternity recruitment is Aug. 14, 2014 Aug. 19, 2014. Sorority women may not visit chapter
facilities during fraternity recruitment.
Potential new members must attend all Formal Recruitment events at the designated times. A potential new member must
receive prior approval from the Panhellenic Recruitment Chairman or the Panhellenic Advisor to miss any event during
the week.
A potential new member participating in Formal Recruitment shall not be, nor ever have been, an initiated member of a
National Panhellenic Conference organization.
A woman is ineligible for membership recruitment if she has been a new member of an NPC sorority at the University of
Oklahoma within the same calendar year.
A woman shall complete the "Membership Recruitment Acceptance" card immediately following the last preference event
she attends. Once a "Membership Recruitment Acceptance" has been signed and submitted, no changes may be made.
A woman signing a "Membership Recruitment Acceptance" card and receiving a bid at the end of Formal Recruitment shall
be bound to the chapter she matched by the agreement for one calendar year at the University of Oklahoma.
Failure to follow any of these rules could result in dismissal from the Formal Recruitment process.
The University of Oklahoma Panhellenic Association Membership Recruitment Guidelines are
intended to help guide fraternity women and potential new members through the membership
selection process and Formal Recruitment week. The guidelines incorporate many of the
procedures recommended and/or required by National Panhellenic Conference. The purpose of
Formal Recruitment is two-fold: 1) to ensure that member organizations have equitable
opportunities for membership recruitment within the Panhellenic system; and 2) to provide
potential new members every opportunity to become acquainted with as many sororities as
possible in order that they may make informed decisions concerning membership.

35
OU Housing and Food Services works with the
Panhellenic Association to support students during their
collegiate experience. Contact information and details
about Housing and Food Services may be found at
housing.ou.edu, or by calling (405) 325-2511.
RECRUITMENT HOUSING:
All potential new members must live in the residence halls
during the Formal Recruitment week. For potential new
members living in the residence halls during the academic
year, Housing and Food will place you in your permanent
room upon move-in. Those not living in the residence halls
for the academic year will be placed into a temporary room
for the week.
The cost of living in the residence halls during Formal
Recruitment is not included in the campus living contract
nor in the Formal Recruitment registration costs. Housing
costs $22.25 per day (this is based on seven days and six
nights of usage prior to the start of the Fall contract) and
OU Housing and Food will charge the fee to your bursar
account. Please do not send payment for housing with
your Formal Recruitment registration. Rates are
subject to change pending University of Oklahoma
Regents approval.
RECRUITMENT MEALS:
Lunch and dinner will be provided on all days of Formal

purchase all other meals during the week.
36
Recruitment Guides also called Rho Gammas
are women from various chapters within the Panhellenic
community who disaffliate from their chapters during the
recruitment season in order to help potential new
members navigate recruitment. Leadership and
enthusiasm are two required qualities for Recruitment
Guides, but they also partake in an extensive application
and interview selection process. Approximately 80 women
are chosen each spring to attend training, and they
dedicate the week of Formal Recruitment to helping the
potential new members. Recruitment Guides are available
for you throughout all of the recruitment process as
unbiased listeners, guides and friends. Get to know your
Rho Gamma because they want to get to know you and
help you make the best decision based on your
personality and interests.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES A SORORITY REQUIRE?
There is a required meeting once a week where you will
exchange information on chapter events and fraternity education.
Weekly chapter study sessions are an option for all members,
along with events such as sisterhood activities, community
service projects and social events. Remember, the more you put
into the sorority, the more you will get out of it.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO BE INITIATED?
Most chapters have an initiation period that ranges from four to
12 weeks. The new member period offers opportunities
to meet other members, learn fraternity history and establish
comfortableness within the chapter. Each chapter builds its own
new member program and decides its own initiation dates.
This is a great question to ask active members as you meet
them during recruitment.
ARE UPPERCLASSMEN ALLOWED TO
PARTICIPATE IN RECRUITMENT?
Most sororities look for a four-year commitment; however, most
of our groups do consider upperclassmen in their recruitment
process. Fewer upperclassmen than freshmen participate in
Formal Recruitment and fewer join chapters. We cannot
predict any one persons recruitment experience. The best
advice is to go through the process with an open mind.
IS THERE A REQUIRED GPA TO PARTICIPATE
IN RECRUITMENT?
The OU Panhellenic Association does not require a specifc
grade-point average to participate in Formal Recruitment.
However, each sorority has a minimum grade requirement to be
considered for membership and initiation. The average grade
point for a freshman to join is around 3.20 and the average grade
requirement for an upper-class student is around 3.00. These
grades are pulled from university records. So, for entering
freshmen, we will use the grades that you were admitted to the
university. For upperclassman, we will use your overall
GPA from prior spring semester.
Q&A
37
DO I NEED TO ATTEND ALL OF THE PARTIES
LISTED ON MY RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE?
Yes, the objective of recruitment as a potential new member is to
learn as much about you can about the OU Greek community as
well as each of the chapters so that you can make the best
possible decision regarding membership. If you intentionally
miss an event you were invited to, you are not maximizing
your options and you could be released from the Formal
Recruitment process.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MAXIMIZE
MY OPTIONS?
When a potential new member makes a selection, it is in her
best interest to rank all of the chapters she attended during that
round. By ranking all chapters, she maximizes her ability to
receive an invitation from any chapter for the next round. If a
potential new member does not maximize her options, it is
possible that she will receive zero invitations for the next round.
If a potential new member does not rank a chapter, she cannot
receive an invitation for the next round from that chapter. OU
Panhellenic strongly discourages intentional single-preference.
WILL ALL PARTICIPANTS PLEDGE A SORORITY
AT THE END OF RECRUITMENT?
Recruitment is a process of mutual selection and, as such,
there are many different outcomes to this process. Participation
in Formal Recruitment does not guarantee an invitation to join a
sorority, nor does it obligate you to join. However, approximately
80 to 90 percent of the women participating in Formal
Recruitment each year join a sorority at the end of the week!
IF I PARTICIPATE IN FORMAL RECRUITMENT,
AM I OBLIGATED TO JOIN A SORORITY?
Potential new members who choose to participate in recruitment
are not obligated to join a sorority. The recruitment process is
structured so as to allow women interested in sorority
membership the opportunity to explore Greek life and to see if it
is the right ft.
IF I AM A LEGACY TO A SORORITY, IS THERE
ANYTHING THAT I SHOULD KNOW?
It does not hurt nor does it help to be a legacy; it simply notifes
our chapters that you have a family member who was a part of a
specifc organization. Each sorority has its own policy regarding
legacies, and it is up to the discretion of each individual chapter
as to whether they are interested in offering membership to
a legacy. Likewise, legacies are not obligated to pledge the
sorority that they are a legacy to. Each potential new member is
evaluated on an individual basis and sororities are more so likely
to consider mutual compatibility, versus a family connection.
WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO BE IN A
CERTAIN SORORITY?
Only wanting to be a member of one specifc sorority or only
considering a few sororities can severely limit a potential new
members options for membership and can lead to
disappointment. Please do not choose a sorority based on
stereotypes or others opinions. We encourage you to keep an
open mind and make a decision that is right for you.

A letter of recommendation also referred to as a rec,
reference is a recruitment information form that is
completed by an alumna of the sorority. The purpose of
a letter of recommendation is to introduce a potential new
member to the alumnas sorority chapter at the University
of Oklahoma. Sororities appreciate and use this
information to assist in their recruitment selection process.
Some sororities require a letter of recommendation, but
it is important to understand that, if a sorority requires a
recommendation, it is the individual sororitys responsibility
to obtain said recommendation.
It is permissible for a potential new member to ask an
alumna member of a sorority to complete a
recommendation form for her own chapter. However, it is
inappropriate for a potential new member (or anyone on
her behalf) to contact an alumna member that she does not
know to ask for a recommendation. Each national sorority
has its own guidelines and its own recommendation forms
that the alumna must use. OU Panhellenic Association
does not provide these forms or any other information
regarding an individual sororitys recommendation
requirements. If an alumna is not familiar with her own
sororitys regulations, she should contact the national
sorority. The information is available in the alumnas
national magazine or on the national website.
Although there is no offcial deadline for when letters of
recommendation must be received, all alumnae are
encouraged to submit them no later than Aug. 5 to ensure
that they are received prior to the start of
Formal Recruitment.
