Onsite Wireless Assessment

1. Site Overview

MSA conducted an engineering site assessment to look at the current wireless coverage for the
The Company networks office locations. The customer requested MSA onsite to do the
following - a passive AirMagnet survey to verify existing coverage and review RF performance
across all floors of both buildings. The Company Offices here are two buildings which all have
Aruba AP-135 access points. Both buildings have 6 floors, though the 6th floor in
4301 is under construction. Both offices have mostly cubicles, offices and conference rooms as
their layouts.

Reported Issues for this investigation were:
4301 5th floor user John Tuttle drops wireless connection. This user was within the area where
2 APs were down, 5-10 & 5-14.
4401 2nd floor Lync call drops or of poor quality in certain areas and conference rooms.
4401 2nd floor user was doing a large data download, moved to a conference room closing
door, data rate became very low, left room and data rate again increased.

Initial observations also were:
ARM power ranges had been lowered to 8 15 dBm for both frequencies. All 2.4 GHz APs had
stabilized @ 9 dBm, the majority of 5 GHz APs were at 15 dBm.
On the 2.4 GHz frequencies generally 20 40 % radio busy was seen pervasively throughout all
APs, though there were few clients and little network traffic at the time of this observation.
Roaming of laptops on 5 GHz (2 windows 8 machines tested) was poor with devices holding
the AP while traversing much of the length of the floor, changing when walls came into the path.
Several APs were logged as down, and had been for a while 4301 1-12, 1-20, 4-02, 5-10, 5-14
(5-08 was only shown as up 20 hours); 4401 4-11.
A Lync call with 4 participants was set up with voice, video and file sharing of streamed
content, on 4 differing windows devices. Participants moved around the 2nd floor, and then all
went to a conference room where Lync showed poor quality on Johns machine. In the room the
window laptops showed the following connection76|good call; connection240|good call;
connection300|intel nic|good call|Delli5Tablet; connection300|Atheros NIC|DellXPS-Johns
machine|poor call.

Summary of WLAN Network Architecture
Aruba Controller 4x M3, a chassis & M3 pair for each building AOS 6.3.0.2. Each
building pair has 2x 10G connections to Core Switches. AirWave is running 7.7.0.
Aruba APs AP-135 - all APs are placed below ceiling tiles or ceiling finishes in both
buildings.
A few AP switch ports are 10/100 with majority 1G connections

Services and Applications run on the WLAN are: email, browsing, SSH, remote desktop tunnels,
video, and office will be moving to the MSFT Lync Communications Application this summer.

4. Recommendations for 4301 & 4401

Please find below our recommendations for further tuning of your WLAN.

1. Several APs were logged as down, and had been for a while 4301 1-12, 1-20, 4-02,
5-10, 5-14 (5-08 was only shown as up 20 hours); 4401 4-11. These APs should
be trouble-shot and brought back up on air.
2. A few APs only had 10/100 Mbps port speeds to their switches; these should be
upgraded to 1 Gbps, as AP-135s can provide through-put of 450 Mbps.
3. Upgrade Aruba Controllers to 6.3.1.3 AOS
4. ARM RF profiles should be separated for the different frequencies 2.4 GHz (b/g) and 5
GHz (a), and adjusted to the following power levels, after AP power levels have
settled, then floor measurements should be reviewed to see if a further adjustment
is necessary.
These changes are to reduce the size of individual APs zone of RF coverage, and
create more roaming of devices between APs, so devices maintain higher data rate
connections to the wireless network:
5GHz RF ARM profile a power min 9, max 12
o If required adjust to 9/9
2.4 GHz RF ARM profile b/g power min 6, max 9
o If required adjust to 6/6
5. It is recommended to add some APs to increase user and device capacity near large
seat capacity meeting room clusters. These are detailed in a following section.
6. It is recommended to move an AP on the 2nd floor in 4301 to a meeting room to reduce
inter-AP chatter as there are many APs have a direct line of sight to each other
in a small open area there. This is detailed in a following section.
