Supporters hope to thwart religious

exemption in pro-LGBT directive

By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A growing number of voices are calling on President
Obama to omit a religious exemption in his planned
executive order barring anti-LGBT discrimination
among federal contractors.
A trio of letters in the span of two days one
from lawmakers, one from civil rights organizations
and another from law professors make the case
to Obama that including a carve-out in his upcoming
directive for religious organizations would be
unprecedented and leave the most vulnerable LGBT
workers open to discrimination.
That stands in contrast to a group of faith leaders,
including Catholic Charities USA and Saddleback
Church pastor Rick Warren, who sent a dierent letter
calling for an exemption in the executive order to
allow religious organizations to continue to receive
federal contracts while being able to discriminate
against LGBT workers.
On Tuesday, a group of 32 House Democrats led
by Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) sent a letter to Obama
saying the executive order should be signed as soon
as possible without exemptions.
Creating a religious exemption for workplace
discrimination would set a dangerous precedent for
employees around the country. With this exemption,
employers would be able to re or refuse to hire
someone based on his or her sexual orientation

Mississippi debuts new anti-gay law

EDITORS NOTE: As part of our special yearlong coverage of poverty in
the LGBT community, the Blade sent a reporter and photographer to
Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. Their reports begin with this look
at business reaction to a new law allowing anti-LGBT discrimination.
JACKSON, Miss. Mitchell Moore, owner of Campbells
Bakery in the Fondren neighborhood of Jackson, was at home
late on April 1 when he read a Facebook post from a lesbian
friend that had a frantic feel to it.
The Mississippi House of Representatives
in a 79-43 vote had just passed Senate
Bill 2681 the Mississippi Religious
Freedom Restoration Act that
activists argue would allow businesses
to deny services to LGBT people based
on their religious beliefs.
The Mississippi Senate quickly
followed suit in a late-night vote.
I was like why would they do this? Moore
told the Washington Blade last week during an interview
at his bakery, referring to previous incidents of bakers and

GWU hosts LGBT
Health Forum

The inextricable link between human

rights and the health of LGBT people
throughout the world was the lead topic
of discussion Tuesday night at the annual
LGBT Health Forum organized by George
Washington Universitys Graduate Program
in LGBT Health Policy and Practice.
Close to 200 people turned out to listen
and ask questions to a panel of experts
on LGBT rights and public health and
discuss the topic of Global LGBT Health
and Human Rights at the universitys
Morton Auditorium at 21st and H streets.
Around the world, lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender individuals face
worse health outcomes than the general
population, said Stephen Forssell,
founding director of the GW LGBT Health
Policy and Practice graduate program in
a welcoming statement to the gathering.
Research reveals that disparities are
due to social injustice and human rights
violations stigma, discrimination, denial
of care, substandard care, a patients fear
of seeking care, and, in some countries,
discriminatory laws and practices and
acts of violence against individuals
based on their sexual orientation and
gender identity, Forssell said in a written
statement.
Among the experts speaking on
the panel during the forum were Nils
Daulaire, a physician and former Assistant
Secretary for Global Aairs at the U.S.
Department of Health and Human
Services; Michael Weinstein, president of
the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which
provides medical services for people with
HIV in the U.S. and abroad; Julie Dorf,
senior adviser to the Council for Global
Equality and founder and former director
of the International Gay & Lesbian Human
Rights Commission; and Javier Vasquez,
Human Rights Law Adviser for the Pan
American Health Organization.
Also addressing the forum was Jack
Andraka, a 16-year-old gay high school
student in Maryland who, at age 15,
developed a test shown to detect
pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer at an
early stage. He told the forum that among
his current priorities is to encourage LGBT
youth to consider perusing an education
and career in science related elds.
Dorf and Weinstein said their
organizations have monitored and in some
cases closely observed growing instances
of anti-LGBT persecution in countries
in Africa and other areas. Despite what
appears to be a worsening outlook for
LGBT people in many parts of the world,
the two said they were optimistic that
worldwide recognition of LGBT equality
as a part of international human rights
norms would soon play a role in ending
anti-LGBT persecution in countries like
Uganda, Russia and Jamaica.
A video of the LGBT Health Forum was
expected to be posted on forums website:

Stein Club member challenges

endorsement of Bowser

The Gertrude Stein Democratic Clubs

vote to endorse D.C. Council member
Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) for mayor and
several other endorsements the club
made at its June 9 meeting are illegal
and could subject the club to a lawsuit,
according to club member Don Haines.
During the Stein Clubs regularly
scheduled meeting on Monday, July 14,
Haines said the club violated its own
bylaws when it voted on July 9 to endorse
Bowser and the other candidates as part
of a single vote.
He noted at Mondays meeting that
the clubs president, Angela Peoples,
overruled his request for a division of
the question that would have allowed
a separate endorsement vote for each
of the candidates, giving members the
option of voting for an endorsement
of some candidates while opposing
endorsements for others.
I am fully condent in the actions taken
by the Stein Club on June 9 and believe
everything was done in line with the club
bylaws and rules, Peoples told the Blade
in an email. The votes on June 9 and the
discussion at last nights meeting show
that the vast majority of the club members
share that perspective, Peoples said.
However, I did tell Don that I would have
an independent third party review documents
to ensure the club is free from legal liability,
Peoples told the Blade in an email.
At least two other club members
who side with Haines call for another
endorsement vote are supporting D.C.
Council member David Catania (I-At-
Large) for mayor. Haines said he has yet
to make up his mind about which mayoral
candidate to support.

Lateefah Williams enters
race for attorney general
D.C. attorney and longtime LGBT rights
advocate Lateefah Williams announced
her candidacy late last week for the citys
newly created position of elected attorney
general, saying she has determined that her
experience as a public policy attorney meets
the legal requirements for the position.
Earlier last week, Williams said she was
considering running for attorney general
but wanted to clarify what she said was
a vaguely worded provision in the D.C.
law creating the new position about the
denition of the practice of law required
for candidates running for the position.
Although I sought clarication on the
qualications as an overabundance of
caution, I am certain that I am beyond
qualied to hold the position of Attorney
General based on both the statutory
criteria and my vast experience, Williams
said in a statement.
The statute in question says a candidate
running for the o ce must have practiced
law for at least ve years during a 10-year
period prior to running for the position
in order to qualify for the post. Williams
says she considers her work as legislative
director of at least two non-prot
organizations as a form of law practice that
meets the legal criteria for the position.

New book on Kameny papers
to be released in November
A collection of about 150 letters written by the late gay rights leader Frank
Kameny is scheduled to be published in November in a new book called Gay Is
Good: The Life and Letters of Gay Rights Pioneer Franklin Kameny.
Michael G. Long, the author and editor of several books on politics, religion,
sports and civil rights, is the editor of the new Kameny book, which will be
published by Syracuse University Press.
These letters are lively and colorful because they are in Kamenys inimitable
voice a voice that was consistently loud, echoing through such places as the
Oval O ce, the Pentagon and the British Parliament, and often shrill, piercing
to the federal agency heads, military generals, and media personalities who
received his countless letters, a statement by Syracuse University Press says.
This volume collects approximately 150 letters from 1958 to 1975, a critical
period in Kamenys life during which he evolved from a victim of the law to a
vocal opponent of the law, to the voice of the law itself, the statement says.
Long told the Blade that he became interested in Kameny and his papers after
he learned about Kamenys early gay rights work while researching connections
between the black civil rights movement and the gay civil rights movement.
I delved into his letters primarily because thats my eld of interest civil
rights letters penned by individuals who pushed us to become a better country
(Jackie Robison, Thurgood Marshall, Bayard Rustin and now Frank Kameny),
Long said in an email to the Blade.
The announcement that Longs book on Kamenys papers is about to be
published comes at a time when author David Carter continues to work on what
is expected to be the denitive biography of Kameny. Carter began work on
his book before Kameny died in October 2011, giving him the opportunity to
interview Kameny extensively.
Carter is the author of the 2004 book, Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked The
Gay Revolution.
Im very familiar with David Carters excellent book on Stonewall, and I expect
that his forthcoming biography of Frank Kameny will be at least as wonderful a
contribution to LGBT history as Stonewall is, Long said.

Straight allies give blood
in place of gay men
in 60 U.S. cities
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
At least 16 gay or bisexual men showed
up with a straight or lesbian ally last
Friday at the Red Cross blood donation
center in D.C. as part of a 60-city National
Gay Blood Drive.
Organizers of the nationwide event,
led by lmmaker and activist Ryan James
Yezak, billed the blood drive as a protest
against a U.S. Food & Drug Administration
policy that prohibits men who have had
sex with other men from donating blood.
Organizers in D.C. and other cities said
the protest was aimed at drawing attention
to the blood donation ban while serving as
an actual blood drive in which straight or
lesbian allies were donating blood in place
of their gay male or bi male friends.
At the end of the day theyre collecting
blood from eligible donors, which is the
most important thing because its saving
lives, said Jay Franzone, aspokesperson
for the National Gay Blood Drive.
Yezak said in a statement that he
initiated the idea of a gay blood drive
last year to draw attention to what he
believes to be a form of discrimination
while promoting the importance of
donating blood.
Eligible allies can donate in place of the
gay or bisexual men who cannot so that
we not only raise awareness about the
ban but also help contribute to the more
than 41,000 blood donations needed
every day, Yezak said in a statement.
We want the FDA to see how our community
can benet the nations blood supply, but also
see how much we can contribute even when
we are banned, he said.
National LGBT rights organizations
have long called on the FDA to change
its policy to focus on risky behaviors of a
potential donor rather than permanently
banning every male who has had sex with
another male at some point in his life.
The policy is outdated, and as a result,
otherwise eligible gay and bisexual men are
unable to contribute to the nations blood
supply and help save lives, said Yezak, who
has produced a documentary lm about
the FDA ban on gay and bi male donors.
In addition, the ban perpetuates
inaccurate stereotypes and negative
stigma about the gay male population,
he said. The current lifetime deferral
focuses on sexual orientation, and we are
calling on the FDA to change its policy so
that it instead focuses on sexual behavior
and individual risk.
Laura Marler, one of the organizers of
the event at D.C.s American Red Cross
donation center at 2025 E Street, N.W.,
said Red Cross o cials gave their full
support and cooperation of the event,
welcoming donors as they arrived on
Friday with their gay male or bi friends.
A Red Cross o cial at the D.C. blood
donation center released a statement to
the media on Friday saying the Red Cross
and other blood centers are bound by the
FDA policy.
According to the statement, the
American Red Cross two other
organizations Advancing Transfusion
and Cellular therapies Worldwide and
Americas Blood Centers believe the
current lifetime deferral for men who
have had sex with other men should
be modied and that donor deferral
criteria should be made comparable with
criteria for other behaviors that pose
an increased risk for transmission of
transfusion-transmitted infections.
FDA spokesperson Jennifer Rodriguez
told the Blade in an email that the safety
of the U.S. blood supplies must remain
one of the FDAs highest priorities.
She said the FDA expects licensed
blood establishments to follow current
regulations and guidance regarding
donor eligibility.
With that said, FDA remains willing
to consider new approaches to donor
screening and testing, Rodriguez said.
If those approaches can assure that
blood recipients are not placed at an
increased risk of HIV or other transfusion
transmitted diseases, FDA will consider a
change to its current policy.
Gay blood drive protests ban on donors
Says hes nished running

lchibbaro@washblade.com
Gay rights advocate and longtime civic
leader Phil Pannell lost his bid for a seat
on the D.C. State Board of Education
in Ward 8 on Tuesday in a low turnout
special election, nishing behind teacher
Tierra Jolly by a margin of 49 percent to
42 percent.
With votes in all of the wards 17
precincts counted except for absentee
ballots, Jolly, who teaches at a Catholic
school in Maryland, received 704
votes.Pannell received 599 votes. Darrell
Danny Gaston, a third candidate in the
race, received 45 votes.
According to the D.C. Board of Elections
and Ethics, a total of 1,433 people turned
out to the polls to vote in the nonpartisan
special election, comprising just 2.65 percent
of Ward 8s 54,008 registered voters.
The turnout was abysmal, said
Pannell at his election night gathering at
Georgenas Restaurant on Martin Luther
King Jr. Avenue, S.E.
Pannell ran unsuccessfully for the Ward
8 school board seat on two previous
occasions. He spoke to the Blade Tuesday
night after returning from a visit to Jollys
election night party at her home to
congratulate her on her victory.
Pannell received an endorsement from
the Washington Post and was backed by
many of his fellow civic and public school
advocates in the ward as well as by LGBT
activists throughout the city.
In its endorsement of Pannell, the
Post said both he and Jolly have solid
credentials and thoughtful ideas.
But we give the edge to Mr. Pannell,
whom we endorsed in his two previous
bids for the board, believing that he has
a more expansive view on policy and
that his longtime activism in Ward 8
would help him focus attention on local
schools, the Post said in a July 4 editorial.
Political observers following the race
noted that Jolly received much of her
nancial support from a network of out-
of-state donors a liated with two national
education organizations Teach for
America, for which Jolly was a volunteer
teacher; and Education Reform Now, which
advocates for charter schools and an end
to automatic tenure for teachers.
I would say the intervention of the
national groups in this race made it a
very steep hill to climb and even to be
competitive, particularly in the closing
week of the election, Pannell said.
She started with an immediate
national network of donors, he said. Ive
lived most of my life in Ward 8 and the
people in Ward 8 are not deep pocket
contributors so I didnt have much to
draw upon, said Pannell.
In the week before the election, LGBT
community advocates participated in a
fundraiser for Pannell hosted by local
gay attorney Darrin Glymph. Pannell,
while calling the LGBT fundraiser a boost
for his campaign, said he was unable to
overcome the advantage Jolly had from
her nationwide network of donors.
But I dont begrudge her for that,
he said. In a way maybe I handicapped
myself by not applying for the Victory
Fund endorsement so that I could have
raised money from gays throughout the
nation. She ran a wonderful campaign
and she was successful.
Pannell was referring to the Gay
and Lesbian Victory Fund, a national
organization that raises money for LGBT
candidates running for public o ce.
Asked if he plans to remain active in Ward
8 civic and political aairs, Pannell replied,
I will remain active but Im not running for
anything. The only thing youll ever hear me
running for anymore will be cover.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the
National Center for Transgender Equality,
said the signicance of citizen lobbyists
coming to D.C. was twofold when asked
what it meant for ENDA.
First, trans people understand that
passing employment protections is not an
option for us; it is a desperately needed
necessity, Keisling said. Second, trans
people are increasingly willing to step up
and give voice to that understanding.
The lobby day kicked o just days
after LGBT groups announced they were
withdrawing support from ENDA due to
concerns over its religious exemption,
which is broader than the exemption for
other categories of workers under Title
VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Speaking before attendees during the
welcome session, LGBT advocates didnt
speak about ENDA itself as much as about
increased visibility, access to transition-
related care and working to eradicate
discrimination against transgender people.
During her remarks, Keisling said the
advancements on care were crucial,
but noted that bias-related hate crimes
against transgender people are still
too common. Recalling the deaths of
transgender victims of hate violence,
Keisling called for a moment a silence
among attendees.
Also speaking to attendees was Kylar
Broadus, the National Gay & Lesbian Task
Forces policy counsel on transgender civil
rights. Broadus spoke at the Lobby Day
even though his organization now opposes
ENDA because of the religious exemption.
In an informational packet for attendees
was a fact sheet explaining that ENDA
is necessary because LGBT people face
serious discrimination in employment.
Discrimination against transgender
people is particularly acute, the fact sheet
says, citing statistics that 90 percent of
transgender workers say theyve been
mistreated on the job or hid their gender
identity to avoid such treatment.
But the fact sheet doesnt ignore the
controversy over the religious exemption.
A note at the bottom says ENDA would
be better o without the provision that
prompted many LGBT advocacy groups
to abandon the bill.
IMPORTANT: The religious exemption
in the current draft on ENDA is
unacceptable; some now oppose
ENDA because the exemption is overly
broad, the note says. There is a better
alternative: a reasonable religious
exemption like that found in Title VII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Also contained in the packet is a fact
sheet on another piece of legislation
the Student Non-Discrimination Act, a bill
that would prohibit public schools from
discriminating against LGBT students.
At a breakout session following
the welcome meeting, attendees
were instructed on how to prepare
for the upcoming day on Capitol Hill:
Address lawmakers as representative,
congressman and congresswoman, then
their last name; make stories compelling,
concise and clear; dont make demands
on what actions a lawmakers should take
without backing it up with an explanation.

CDC report says
gay men more likely
to drink and exercise
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A new report from the Department
of Health & Human Services has found
that less than three percent of the U.S.
population publicly identies as gay,
lesbian or bisexual.
The report from the Centers for
Disease Control, which was made public
on Tuesday, found that 1.6 percent of
Americans identify as gay or lesbian
and 0.7 percent identify as bisexual.
Those numbers mean 2.2 percent of the
population identies as LGB.
Meanwhile, 96.6 percent of the
population identify as straight and
the remaining 1.1 percent identify as
something else or stated I dont know
the answer. No data was collected on
identication based on gender identity or
transgender status.
The information was based on data
from the 2013 National Health Interview
Survey, which for the rst time in its 57-
year history last year included questions
related to sexual orientation.
According to the report, the addition
of survey questions related to sexual
orientation should help meet the Healthy
People 2020 goals identied by HHS in
addition to health objectives related to
LGBT people.
NHIS includes a wide range of survey
questions on health, the addition of
questions on sexual orientation will
facilitate many opportunities for future
researchers to examine health among
sexual minority populations using a
nationally representative sample of U.S.
adults, the report states.
Using the information, the report makes
some comparisons between the LGB and
the straight population. For example, a
higher percentage of women 1864 who
identify as bisexual had experienced
serious psychological distress compared
to straight women. Moreover, among
men 1864, a higher percentage of those
who identify as gay or bisexual have
received tests for HIV compared with
those who identify as straight.
The report also nds that alcohol and
cigarette consumption is higher among
people who identify as lesbian, gay or
bisexual than it is for straight people. Among
the ndings: 33 percent of gay and lesbian
people consumed ve or more alcoholic
beverages in a single day, compared to 22.3
percent of straight people and 39.5 percent
of bisexual people.
Among men, the report also found a
higher percentage met federal guidelines
for aerobic physical activity. Among gay
men, 63.5 percent of respondents met
that standard as opposed to 53.7 percent
of straight men and 53.3 percent of
bisexual men.
A spokesperson at HHS deferred
questions on the report to CDC, which
didnt immediately respond to the
Washington Blades request for comment.
The percentage of those who identify
as gay in the report is smaller than the
commonly held belief that 10 percent
of all people are gay, but the reports
ndings are along the lines of a 2011
study from the Williams Institute at the
University of California, Los Angeles.
That report found that 1.7 percent
of the population identies as gay or
lesbian and 1.8 percent of the population
identies as bisexual. An estimated
700,000 transgender people live in the
United States, the report found.
Gary Gates, a distinguished scholar at
the Williams Institute, said the new CDC
report is a milestone for its inclusion of
sexual orientation questions and is on
par with the result of existing surveys.

Mother launched Baton
Rouge PFLAG after gay
sons suicide
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
BATON ROUGE, La. Sergio Oramas,
whos gay, and Ksaa Tair, a transgender
woman who identies as demisexual,
live in a two-bedroom apartment in the
St. John neighborhood of Baton Rouge.
Their rent is $600 a month, but Oramas
tries to get as much overtime as he can
at the Sears warehouse where he has
worked for two months to substantiate
Tair who remains unable to get a job. She
said half of the money she receives from
Medicare each month pays bills and rent,
while another good section of that goes
to the hormones she buys from a website
outside the U.S.
Were family, Tair told the Washington
Blade on Saturday, referring to Oramas.
Oramas and Tair are among the dozen
LGBT residents of Baton Rouge, advocates
from groups that include Equality Louisiana
and the Louisiana Trans Association and
allies with whom the Blade spoke on
Saturday as they ate traditional Louisiana
cuisine at a local restaurant.
Tom Merrill, chair of Baton Rouge
Pride, grew up in Plain Dealing, a small
town in northwestern Louisiana. He has
lived in Baton Rouge for nearly 29 years.
There are lots of things here that you
just dont nd anyplace else, Merrill told
the Blade as his partner of nearly two
decades, Rick Cain, listened. Your familys
not necessary the people that are related
to you by blood. Thats really true in a larger
culture here, that everybodys your family.
That sense of family was palpable during
a nearly two hour lunch with the group.
Carol Frazier, the former president of
PFLAG Greater Baton Rouge, hugged Merrill
and others after arriving at the restaurant.
She also described this reporters lunch of
thinly cut fried sh over rice with crawsh
toue as looking yummy after a
waitress brought it to the table.
Terri Higginbotham, who is the chapters
secretary, told the Blade that her now
20-year-old son came out to her as gay
when he was a freshman in high school.
She said she received Mothers Day
cards from some of the LGBT youth with
whom she works. Higginbotham added
some of them even list her as their
mother on their Facebook pages.
They dont have families who will help
take care of them, she told the Blade. That
shouldnt be the case. If you have a child,
you should love and care for that child
either way. It doesnt matter who they love.
It doesnt matter who they want to marry.
It doesnt matter if they want to shave their
head and move to Mozambique.
Katrina prompts
Baton Rouge Pride
Merrill and other LGBT rights advocates
launched Baton Rouge Pride in late 2006,
slightly more than a year after the citys
population swelled by nearly 200,000
because of the inux of those from New
Orleans and other areas of southeastern
Louisiana who had been displaced by
Hurricane Katrina.
We were in the post-Katrina period
where Baton Rouge was the largest city in
the state, but we had really nothing going
on for Pride, said Merrill.
Their rst event was a picnic that took
place in June 2007.
Baton Rouge Pride takes place in June
because of the anniversary of the Stonewall
riots and what Merrill described as the
historical signicance of that. The weather,
however, quickly became an issue.
The heat index in Baton Rouge on
Saturday was well above 100 degrees.
Merrill told the Blade that paramedics
ran out of chemical ice packs last year
because of the high temperatures.
They were throwing ice in latex gloves and
putting them on peoples heads, he said.
The annual event now takes place
in a casino along the Mississippi River
and features a resource fair and
entertainment. Equality Louisiana also
holds a march along the riverfront to the
nearby state capitol alongside the Capital
City Alliance, a local LGBT advocacy group.
Baton Rouge Pride last year honored
Frazier and PFLAG Executive Director Jody
Huckaby, who grew up in Eunice, La., as
their grand marshals.
Roughly 20 people whom a
fundamental religious group bussed into
Baton Rouge protested this years Pride,
compared to a handful of protesters who
usually gather outside the event each
year. Merrill told the Blade that they tell
those pushing children in a stroller into
the casino that they are going to hell.
As adults we have no problem with
that, he said. You dont say that sort of
thing to a three-year-old. We, particularly
as Southerners, would never say negative
things in front of small children. That
aects their lives, but they dont seem to
have that same idea of politeness.
Voice of sodomy
Matt Patterson, research and policy
coordinator for Equality Louisiana, moved to
Baton Rouge to attend graduate school. He
and his partner, Bobby Beaird, who is the vice
president of PFLAG Greater Baton Rouge,
celebrated their fth anniversary on July 4.
Patterson told the Blade that he became
the voice of sodomy last year after news
that the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheris
O ce had arrested at least a dozen men
under the states sodomy law since 2011.
He said he is one of the few people who
are willing to speak to the local media
about LGBT-specic issues.
So somehow whenever shit happens
in Baton Rouge, I always wind up being
the person to go on the local news to talk
about it, said Patterson.
Fraziers decision to launch PFLAG
Greater Baton Rouge stems from her gay
sons suicide in 2002 when he was 37.
She told the Blade before eating her
lunch that he moved from Baton Rouge
to Nashville because he felt he wasnt
accepted. Frazier, a former journalist,
said he had a corporate-type job that
she said did not compliment his real life.
I felt as though I were to represent the
parents who may have not have been as
kind to their gay child as I was, she said.
It was my way of saying lets all work
together to make this a world we can all
live in comfortably.

Lesbian performance
artist, ACLU staer
Constance Gordon on
life in rural South
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
JACKSON, Miss. It was shortly before
midnight on Saturday when Constance
Gordon arrived at Club Metro, a nightclub
along U.S. Highway 80 in Jackson that is
popular among local LGBT people of color.
Gordon, a performance artist whose
stage name is Lyrik Skilz, greeted a
handful of people who were sitting in
chairs alongside an expansive dance
oor as a DJ played hip-hop. She then
walked backstage with Todd Allen, a local
LGBT rights advocate who works with
GetEQUAL, and spoke to a handful of
other people before the weekly lesbian
show she emcees began at 1:30 a.m.
I do entertain and have fun and drink,
Gordon told the Washington Blade
during an interview in the dressing room
backstage. Its pretty cool.
Gordon, 31, was born and raised
outside McComb in Pike County near the
Louisiana border.
She described herself as a masculine-
gendered woman who is from the rst
generation of free black people.
Gordon said she was called the N-word
plenty of times when she was younger.
I guess because Im a rst generation
of free black people, it didnt make me
feel like it made my mom feel or my
grandma feel, she told the Blade. It
didnt make me feel like it took something
from me or belittle me. I was just like F
you instead of being like Oh, Im so sick
of this oppression. It was more like if I
wasnt getting in line for a cheeseburger
I could kick your ass.
Gordon described this reaction as my
privilege because she said her mother
and her grandmother would not have
had the same opportunity to respond
in the way that she did during legalized
racial segregation in Mississippi.
Thats a privilege that my mom didnt
have, my grandma didnt have, to be able to
say something back to them, she said. They
were scared to say something because you
get your teeth knocked out. I was scared
to say something because I didnt want to
ght that night. I didnt want them to come
back and shoot me or something like that;
something more modern.
Gordon said she gets all kinds of looks
from both men and women because of
her masculine gender presentation.
Gordon has worked for the American
Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi since
early 2012.
Her work primarily focuses on youth
and LGBT advocacy that includes the
implementation of anti-bullying policies
and other issues where youth, justice
and LGBT rights kind of crosses over. She
also runs Youth in Color, a program that
seeks to create Gay-Straight Alliances and
other LGBT rights organizations.
The ACLU of Mississippi is among the
groups that are monitoring potential
incidents of businesses denying service
to LGBT people because of their religious
beliefs under a controversial state law
Senate Bill 2681 or the Mississippi
Religious Freedom Restoration Act that
took eect on July 1.
Gordon is among the dozens of LGBT
rights advocates who took part in protests
in Jackson, Biloxi and around the state
after Gov. Phil Bryant signed the measure
into law in April.
We do not support 2681, she said.
LGBT Mississippians
face poverty
Gordon told the Blade that one of the
major challenges LGBT Mississippians
face is what she described as a lack of
social equality.
There are so many LGBT people here
that its easy to say that theres not a
problem because no one will discriminate
in your face, she said. [Its] hands-o
discrimination so where [they say] OK I wont
let you stay here, but you dont know I wont
let you stay here because of that because Ill
give you another reason, but because [at]
face value you cant tell, regardless.
Gordon noted the majority of
Mississippis LGBT advocates are white,
but she told the Blade that more people of
color have begun to support their eorts.
The more and more you see it,
the more people we see at events in
Mississippi that are supporting LGBT
stu, she said. The forefront of white
people is maybe needed you know
like abolitionists or something. Its that
availability. Theyre available.
Poverty remains a serious issue that
LGBT Mississippians continue to confront.
The U.S. Census notes slightly more
than 22 percent of the states population
of nearly three million people were living
below the poverty line between 2008-
2012. This gure jumps to roughly 28
percent of the total population in Jackson,
which is nearly 80 percent black, during
the same period.
Gordon told the Blade that disparities
in education, health care and other
areas are at least twice the rate among
LGBT people as they are among their
heterosexual counterparts.
LGBT children who are living in poverty
are just like the straight children who are
living in poverty except theyre two times
or more worse because theyre being
not only targeted for being poor, she
said. Theyre targeted and left out and
excluded and other things like that for
being LGBT at the same time.
She noted family rejection especially
among LGBT youth of color contributes
to poverty.
Gordon said many of them eventually
end up in the states juvenile justice system.
I can denitely say that there are a
lot of people displaced here all the time
because of coming out as LGBT just
because of the simple fact that this is a
very religious place, said Gordon. Its
kind of like if we dont see it, we dont get
in trouble for it. Theyre like go from my
house and then I wont feel bad because
Im not accepting you. We get a lot of kids
like that. But its always been a problem
here because of where we are.
Civil rights movement
empowers LGBT advocates
She acknowledged she agrees with
many of the stereotypes associated
with Mississippi including so-called
rednecks. Gordon also referred to
blacknecks, who she described as
rednecks, but theyre black people.
Its part of the deep-rooted culture
that we have thats a slave and master,
she said. So you mimic the masters. Its
subliminal.
Gordon added she feels the legacy of
the civil rights movement in the state
especially the 50th anniversaries of the
signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and
Freedom Summer is empowering the
current movements for LGBT rights and
racial equality.
People dont realize that we got that
freedom, of course we forgot about the
movement, she said, noting how LGBT
and civil rights advocates alike opposed
SB 2681. Its easy to forget about people
oppressing you when you can nally
get a job and support yourself when
you can box all this stu and youre not
noticing all that oppression as easily.
These same people are still here. We
dont leave. A lot of us are rooted and
Im one of the rooted.
Gordon, who met her partner at Club
Metro last year, said she remains proud of
her state in spite of the challenges she and
other LGBT Mississippians continue to face.
Im proud to be from Mississippi
because this is where Im from, she said.
Thats enough reason for me. Im born
from the dirt here.

Are you not going to make cakes for gay

Moore decided to launch a Facebook
page against SB 2681 even before Gov.
Phil Bryant signed it into law during a
private ceremony that Family Research
Council President Tony Perkins and
members of the Mississippi-based
American Family Association and other
anti-LGBT groups attended on April 3.
I thought no, Im not going to have

Moore, a straight Republican who is

a thin rainbow band and the slogan If
youre buying, were selling.
More than 1,000 businesses across
the state and around the country have
received stickers since the campaign
formally launched.
The message is we dont
discriminate, said Moore, referring
to four Middle Eastern men who
purchased a birthday cake and wrote
a message on it in Arabic at his bakery
after they read about the campaign. I
dont care if youre a Muslim. I dont care
if youre black, I dont care if youre gay. I
dont care. Youre my customer. Im here
to sell to everybody. I have a business
thats open to the public.
Kelly Kyle, a gay lawyer in Ridgeland,
a suburb of Jackson, also launched a
Facebook group called Mississippians
Against Discrimination of Any Kind when
he rst heard about SB 2681.
He told the Blade during a Thursday
interview at his o ce that the only thing
he and others knew about the measure
was that it sought to add In God We
Trust into the state seal.
We just feel it is leaving the door open
to discrimination, said Kyle. Frankly the
bill was unnecessary in the rst place.
There is no protection for community to
begin with. Theyre adding something on
top of that that really wasnt necessary in
the rst place.
Law embodies Old South
The ght against SB 2681, which took
eect on July 1, continues to galvanize
LGBT rights advocates across the state.
Members of the Dandelion Project, an
LGBT support group in Laurel, protested
the measure on the steps of the State
Capitol. They also worked with Moore
and others who launched the We dont
discriminate campaign.
Some students at the University of
Mississippi wore We dont discriminate
stickers and rainbow-colored socks as a
way to protest Bryants decision to sign
SB 2681 during their commencement
ceremony in May at which he spoke.
It wasnt an in your face, let me shut
down your speech kind of protest,
Outlaw told the Blade during an interview
at the Jackson hair salon he co-owns
with his husband whom he married in
California last year. It was denitely a
show of support.
Rev. Brandiilyne Dear, co-founder of
the Dandelion Project, also criticized the
measure during an interview at a coee
shop in downtown Laurel.
SB 2681 is the living embodiment of
everything that the Old South stood for,
she said. It was a law to let the LGBT
community know that theres no place for
them here.
Members of the Dandelion Project
were far more blunt about SB 2681 as
they spoke to the Blade a few hours later
during their weekly meeting at the small
house in which Dear and her partner,
Susan, live in Laurel.
I dont understand why theyre going
to just bring up more bullshit, said Aiden,
a 20-year-old transgender man from
Laurel. I mean just get over it. If they
would open up their minds like they open
up their mouths, wed be set.
Other members of the Dandelion
Project told the Blade that the manager
of a popular restaurant in Hattiesburg
last month brought a lesbian couple
their food in carry-out containers and
told them it was closing, even though
it was 7 p.m. and it was full of other
customers.
Bob Saunders said as he and his
partner, Eric Wood, and two other local
LGBT advocates stued envelopes for
the We dont discriminate campaign
at their Jackson home on Thursday
that someone criticized the owner of a
local tire shop for supporting the eort
against SB 2681. He said the business
owner gave the person who questioned
his position on the law a number of
things about him that included he had
voted for President Obama.
It was a really potent statement,
said Saunders.
Gov. Bryant has gay son?
Mississippis anti-discrimination and
hate crime laws do not include sexual
orientation and gender identity and
expression.
Outlaw told the Blade that he
and others behind the We dont
discriminate campaign have met with
the American Civil Liberties Union of
Mississippi to strategize a response to
any incidents of businesses denying
services to LGBT people under
SB 2681.
We are all being vigilant and prepared
to document these stories and share
them, he said. I dont think its a matter of
if. I think its a matter of when something
will happen.
A number of LGBT Mississippians
with whom the Blade has spoken in
recent days said they feel Bryant signed
SB 2681 into law to simply please his
conservative base.
Im not surprised at all, said Ryvell
Fitzpatrick, a gay teacher, during an
interview at his home in Greenville as
he discussed the measure and other
controversial Mississippi laws that
have recently taken effect. Theres a
good old boys connection thats going
on and if youre in, youre in. If youre
not, oh well. And I definitely see things
happening that are almost tokens that
are thrown just to kind of pacify [their
supporters] or just to shut people up.
Alyx, a 27-year-old lesbian who is a
member of the Dandelion Project, said
the governor signed SB 2681 because
hes an idiot.
Bryant said in a statement he
released after signing the measure that
it is identical to a federal law that then-
President Bill Clinton signed in 1993.
I am proud to sign the Mississippi
Religious Freedom Restoration Act today,
which will protect the individual religious
freedom of Mississippians of all faiths
from government interference, said
Bryant. Mississippi has now joined 18
other states to defend religious freedoms
on a state level.
Moore speculated the real reason
Bryant signed the measure into law is
because he has yet to accept his adult
sons homosexuality.
Hes got some demons, said Moore.
The Blade could not immediately conrm
that Patrick Bryant, an interior designer
based in Austin, Texas, is gay.
Those involved with the campaign
against SB 2681 remain hopeful it will
continue to gain traction.
Moore showed the Blade a picture of
a ier the New York City Commission on
Human Rights used that contained the
campaigns slogan. Wood and Saunders
noted people as far away as Uganda have
requested stickers.
Its not just for the LGBT community,
said Moore. I know its got a rainbow
on it, but thats because of thats how
it started. The message is we dont
discriminate.

or gender identity, the letter states.
Your action at the federal level must
put a complete stop to these unfair and
discriminatory workplace practices.
Other signers of the letter include Reps.
John Conyers (D-Mich.), Allyson Schwartz
(D-Pa.), Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), Linda
Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Henry Waxman
(D-Calif.).
In response to a question from the
Washington Blade, White House Press
Secretary Josh Earnest said on Tuesday
just after the letter was published that he
wasnt aware of the missive, nor did he
have any updates on the executive order.
I havent seen the letter so Id hesitate
to react to it, but I will tell you that the
position that we still have here is that
the president has directed his team
to draw up an executive order for his
consideration, Earnest said. Theyre
working on something along those
lines, and Im not in a position to talk
about either the content of that possible
executive order or a timing on which it
might be announced.
The letter does not include signatures
from any of the seven openly lesbian,
gay or bisexual members of the U.S.
House, even though each had previously
called on Obama to sign the executive
order. They are each sponsors of the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act,
a bill that would bar employers from
discriminating against LGBT workers, but
that contains an exemption for religious
organizations.
The letter also isnt signed by any
members of House leadership, including
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(D-Calif.) or House Minority Whip Steny
Hoyer (D-Md.), although members of
congressional leadership generally dont
sign group letters. No Republican signed
the letter.
Another letter obtained by the
Washington Blade on Tuesday and
signed by the more than 70 civil rights
organizations also makes the case for
why Obama should refrain from including
a religious exemption in the upcoming
executive order.
Religious freedom is one of our
most cherished values, a fundamental
and dening feature of our national
character, the letter states. It does not,
however, provide organizations the right
to discriminate using taxpayer dollars.
When a religiously a liated organization
makes the decision to request a taxpayer-
funded contract with the federal
government, it must play by the same
rules as every other federal contractor.
The letter urges Obama to rescind
President George W. Bushs religious
exemption in Executive Order 11246,
which allows religiously a liated federal
contractors to discriminate on the basis
of religion.
Among the signers of the letters are
LGBT groups such as the National Gay
& Lesbian Task Force, Gay & Lesbian
Advocates & Defenders, HRC and
GetEQUAL Action. Non-LGBT groups that
signed the letter include the Leadership
Conference on Civil Rights, the Anti-
Defamation League and the NAACP.
But many LGBT groups that work
on LGBT rights did not sign the letter,
including Freedom to Work, Out & Equal
Workplace Advocates, the National Black
Justice Coalition and the New York-based
LGBT grassroots group Queer Nation.
Tico Almeida, president of Freedom
to Work, said the absence of his
organizations name from the letter was
an error and another letter should be
forthcoming with the names of additional
civil rights groups.
Freedom to Work did sign onto the
coalition letter to President Obama
because we believe there should be no
Hobby Lobby loopholes to the upcoming
executive order creating LGBT protections
at federal contractors, Almeida said.
Still another letter led by Columbia
Universitys Center for Gender &
Sexuality and made public on Monday
urges Obama not to include a religious
exemption in the executive order and
was signed by 54 legal scholars.
Indeed, the proposed exemption
would be unprecedented, the letter
states. Including such a provision
in newly expanded rights for LGBT
employees of federal contractors would
at once undermine workplace equity
for LGBT employees, relegate LGBT
protections to a lesser status than existing
prohibitions against discrimination, and
allow religious employers to create or
maintain discriminatory workplaces with
substantial public funding.
Among the signers of the letter are
Katherine Franke, director for the Columbia
Universitys Center for Gender & Sexuality
Law; Martha Nussbaum, a law professor
at the University of Chicago; Tobias
Wol, a law professor at the University
of Pennsylvania; and Nan Hunter, a law
professor at Georgetown University.
James Merchant dies at 77
Worked as HHS adviser
James Jay Melvin Merchant died on June 25 due to heart failure, at George
Washington University Hospital. He was an international relations adviser at the
Department of Health & Human Services.
Merchant was born on Sept. 4, 1936 in Saluda, S.C. He held a bachelors
of science degree in business administration from the University of South
Carolina and a masters degree in health care administration from the Virginia
Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, Va., which
was awarded with honors.
Merchant served as an international health care adviser at HHS and was the
principal liaison between HHS and the international community through its
embassies based in Washington. Merchant was widely regarded as an expert
on the U.S. health care system and the Medicare Program in particular. Foreign
o cials often came to him to help them understand the complex American
health care system, and for advice on how to improve the health care programs
in their own countries.
Merchant was proud of the fact that he became Sir Jay in April, 2013 when he
was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands into the House of Orange
for his service to the Netherlands.
He was an active member of the board of Bnai Brith Homecrest House in
Silver Spring, Md., and the Washington Home & Community Hospices.
Merchant is survived by three sisters: Joyce Porth, Mary Merchant and Johnnie
Hakim all of Columbia, S.C., as well as friend Wayne Russell of Crossville, Tenn.,
and his partner of 10 years Gerry Woods of Washington.
A memorial service will be held at National Presbyterian Church (4101

Attorney Elliott A. Brager died in his
Mount Washington home on July 7 from
heart failure at the age of 72. He was known
in Baltimore as a fundraising giant as he
aggressively sold tickets to numerous fall
fundraisers and spring bunches during the
1980s on behalf of the then- Gay and Lesbian
Center of Baltimore. He also founded the
Baltimore chapter of GAMMA (Gay and
Married Mens Association) a support group
that met at the community center.
In addition, Brager was an activist in the
ght against AIDS as he lost many friends from
the disease during the 1980s. He worked with
organizers of an annual charity, Lifesongs for
AIDS, to raise money for medical research. He
also advocated for the Chase Brexton Health
Center and AIDS Action Baltimore.
He is survived by a brother, a son and
a daughter plus legions of friends in and

Pro-LGBT candidates
face of in Howard
Its not often you see a Republican
and a Democrat tout their pro-LGBT
bona des during a political debate but
thats exactly what happened at a PFLAG-
Howard County forum in Columbia on
July 8. It was the rst post-primary forum
of the campaign in the county.
Republican Allan H. Kittleman, a former
state senator who is vying to succeed Ken
Ulman as the next county executive and
his opponent, Democratic Council member
Courtney Watson, shared their visions for
the county on a wide array of issues.
In a civil discussion, both candidates
contrasted their views and records in front
of more than 60 in attendance. Kittleman
reminded the audience of his long-
standing relationship with PFLAG and that
several members helped sway his views
toward supporting marriage equality. He
said fairness and equal rights are his main
priorities as taught by his father, and these
values transcend political parties. I had
been the only Republican to show up at
PFLAG picnics, he pointed out.
Watson also asserted her relationship
with PFLAG and the LGBT community
ever since she was on the countys school
board. Her son was a classmate with the
transgender child of a member of PFLAG
and encouraged Watson to support
trans rights. As such, she helped craft a
countywide non-discrimination bill based
on gender identity in 2011.
After elding questions that were
submitted online regarding such topics as
housing, economic development, education,
budget and county services, the question
of LGBTQ homelessness was raised
pointing out that LGBTQ youth comprise a
disproportionate percentage of homeless
youth in the county. Watson indicated that
32 e ciency units for the homeless are
underway. She added that organizations
such as Grass Roots and mental health crisis
units need to be part of the solution.
Kittleman responded that the LGBT
community needs to be part of the
conversation.
I will form an LGBT advisory committee,
which will meet regularly to keep me as
county executive informed of all the related
issues, he said. Kittleman also wants a
similar group to work with the police. He
cited his work on passing Graces Law as an
important step in combating cyber bullying,
especially against LGBT youth.
Watson pointed out that PFLAG has
already done excellent work with the
police department. She added that, the
school system is putting out guidelines
and training materials for all teachers and
administrators regarding trans kids.

HIV rates among MSMs still a problem: study
VANCOUVER The number of new HIV diagnoses in British Columbia has steadily
declined in the past decade, but not for gay and bisexual men, who have shown no
meaningful decreases and accounted for nearly two-thirds of new cases in 2012,
according to a new report from British Columbias provincial health o cer, the Globe
and Mail reports.
Perry Kendall released the report, co-authored with Mark Gilbert from the B.C. Centre
for Disease Control, on Monday, noting a complex interaction of societal and structural
drivers has resulted in gay and bisexual men carrying a disproportionate burden of
HIV in B.C. These include individual factors such as sexual behavior and HIV testing, as
well as outside factors such as stigma, marginalization, poor social supports and other
systemic challenges to HIV prevention, the article said.
While there has been considerable advancement in understanding and treating HIV,
and related successes in reducing HIV incidence overall in B.C., existing programs and
initiatives have not resulted in meaningful reductions in HIV incidence among gay and
bisexual men since the early 2000s, the report stated.
This exposure group currently makes up the largest number and proportion of new
HIV diagnoses in B.C. Renewing HIV prevention in B.C. requires working with gay and
bisexual men to address the many drivers of the epidemic and making meaningful
improvements in HIV prevention within this important exposure group.
Aussies waiting too long
for HIV treatment: researchers
LONDON About 30 percent of patients with HIV are diagnosed well after they
should have begun treatment, according to the latest Australian data, suggesting early-
testing initiatives have not worked, the Guardian reports.
Despite 88 percent of the countrys new infections occurring in gay men, unprotected
sex in that group continues to be a key driver of infections, making falling HIV testing
rates among young gay men a concern, the article said.
There were 1,235 new cases of HIV diagnosed in Australia last year an increase of
70 percent since 1999 when diagnoses were at their lowest, gures from the annual HIV
surveillance report by the University of NSW Kirby Institute show.
Many of those were not being diagnosed early enough, allowing their immune system
to fail and potentially posing a risk to others, the report found.
The best indicator of how long a person has had HIV for is their CD4+ cell count per
microlitre, which declines on average by 5060 percent per year in people with HIV. The
proportion of late diagnosis cases, dened by a CD4+ cell count of less than 350 cells
per microlitre at diagnosis, had not improved in the three years to 2013, the report
found. In people without HIV, the count is above 500, the Guardian article said.
These data are suggestive of no substantial shift in the disease stage at which people
are diagnosed despite recent initiatives to increase HIV testing, the report said.
Gay blood ban protest
draws wide participation
PORTLAND, Maine More than 60 cities nationwide, including Portland,
Maine, Washington, D.C. and others, took part in the National Gay Blood Drive
on July 11.
Michael Quint, Portlands drive leader, said the goal is to encourage the
Food and Drug Administration to change its policy, which bans gay men from
donating blood. The policy was enacted in 1983. Quint said it made sense at the
time because no one knew how AIDS was contracted, WMTW 8, a regional ABC
news a liate, reports.
I want to be able to give blood. I have O negative, Quint was quoted as having
said. Quint cant donate because he is gay. He said now the policy is outdated,
and it should be changed to allow all healthy people to donate, the WMTW
report said.
Gay and bisexual men are not giving blood today. People are coming on their
behalf to donate for them because theyre prohibited, Quint was quoted as
having said.
In a statement, the American Red Cross said that it has to follow the FDAs
policies.

Todays headlines bring
back bad memories
of 2007 debacle
Todays headlines are eerily reminiscent
of the acrimonious debate within the LGBT
community over the ENDA bill that passed
the House of Representatives on Nov. 7,
2007. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) made
a personal and emotional speech on the
oor of the House that culminated in pas-
sage of the bill. Then came the vicious back-
lash from many individuals and groups,
including Stonewall Democrats, a group
Frank founded, because the bill didnt in-
clude protections for transgender people.
At the time, Frank and others said that
the question was getting protections for
the many, which was possible, versus get-
ting protections for none. In 2007, a bill in-
cluding protections for transgender people
had zero chance of passing. It turned out
with or without the inclusion of trans peo-
ple that bill didnt get through the Senate.
Now once again the LGBT commu-
nity is ghting over ENDA. This time it
passed the Democratic-controlled Sen-
ate with the leadership of lesbian Sen.
Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), another hero
to our community. Its now stalled in the
Republican-controlled House. On July 8,
a group of LGBT and civil rights organi-
zations formally dropped their support
for the bill, which apparently still has the
support of President Obama and the Hu-
man Rights Campaign. The reason given
by the groups to formally withdraw their
support is based on the recent Supreme
Court decision in the Hobby Lobby case.
The Hobby Lobby ruling has given cre-
dence to the view that the wide religious
exemption in the current ENDA bill would
allow for gaps in how the bill could be
applied and open the door to continued
discrimination against many in the LGBT
community. The national groups that
pulled their support for ENDA include the
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the
American Civil Liberties Union, Gay and
Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, Lambda
Legal, the National Center for Lesbian
Rights, the Transgender Law Center and
Pride at Work.
HRC, the largest LGBT advocacy group,
has not withdrawn its support for the bill.
HRC spokesperson Fred Sainz said, HRC
supports ENDA because it will provide es-
sential workplace protections to millions
of LGBT people. Following some back-
lash, HRC President Chad Gri n released
a statement that still indicated support for
the bill but noted HRC wants changes made
to the section on religious exemptions. He
also tried to change the subject by saying
HRC supports an overarching civil rights bill
for the LGBT community. This would be a
bill similar to the one rst introduced by
Rep. Bella S. Abzug (D-N.Y.) in 1974.
The debate in the community over
whether to pull support for the current bill
may be moot as it appears the House will
not take up ENDA this session. Speaker
John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said he will not
bring it to the oor for a vote even in the
lame-duck session. That means the next
Congress will begin the process anew. This
debate will, however, draw heightened
attention to the question of what will be
included in the executive order banning
discrimination against the LGBT commu-
nity in federal contracting ,which after six
years of stalling, the president has said he
would sign. He has to be questioning what
the LGBT communitys response would be
if religious exemptions are in the EO. There
appears to be broad opposition to provid-
ing those exemptions.
Baldwin is now in a bind and being de-
monized by some in the community. She,
like Frank before her, worked hard to get
the best bill she could pass. She worked
with colleagues to draft a bill that would
attract the needed votes. We need to re-
member that Baldwin will have to continue
to work with those colleagues in the next
Congress and gain their votes for a new
bill if this one doesnt pass. House mem-
bers like Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) will be in
a bind if Boehner decides to bring up the
bill in the lame-duck session. Baldwin, like
Frank before her, understood that to pass
any legislation compromise is needed. She
worked with the support of the community
on the assumption that if we could protect
the rights of the huge majority of LGBT
persons that was better than protecting
none. Clearly many groups now disagree,
with legitimate reason, but we must also
remember that when the bill passed it had
overwhelming community support.
The next ashpoint in this debate may
come when the president issues the long-
awaited executive order.

Your characters sexual
orientation is for you to decide
By DANA RUDOLPH
I played the original Dungeons & Dragons
game in high school, back in the early 1980s.
Ive been delighted to see it is experiencing a
resurgence and capturing my sons interest
as well. A recent encounter made me love the
game, and the company behind it, even more.
During July 4th week, my spouse, son, and
I went on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska with
her family and my mom. Our son spent most
of the time playing D&D with his cousin and
some other kids they met on the boat. After
the cruise, my spouse, son, mom, and I visited
Seattle for a few days, staying at Marriotts
Springhill Suites in the suburb of Renton. Wed
never been to that hotel before, but chose it
for availability, reasonable price and location
near (but not too near) the airport.
Our son was less interested in the Space
Needle than in nding a miniature elf wizard
gurine for his D&D game. We perused a cou-
ple of Seattles many game shops, but to no
avail. Little did we know that powerful magical
forces were at work.
Sitting in our hotel room, I launched Google
Maps to nd a nearby place to eatand
shrieked. By complete coincidence, Wizards of
the Coast, the company that makes D&D, had
its headquarters on the same block. I looked
out the window. Across the parking lot, gleam-
ing in the sun, was their building.
I quickly brought up the Wizards website
(wizards.com) to see if they gave tours. Alas,
no, but they did boast of a dragon named
Mitzy in the lobby. We decided that we would
at least go snap some photos with Mitzy.
Mitzy loomed on the left as we entered the
reception area. Shelves along the walls held
D&D books and sets for Magic the Gathering,
the companys trading card game. I explained
to the receptionist, Angela, that my son and I
were D&D players, and we couldnt let the co-
incidence of our hotel location pass us by with-
out a visit. Our son said that hed just spent
hours playing the game on our cruise. She
seemed amenable to having us take some
photos, so we did.
My mom noticed, however, that there was a
line of D&D gurines along the reception desk.
She asked Angela if she knew a nearby place
to purchase them. (Wizards doesnt sell things
from its headquarters.) She said no, and then
excused herself to head down the hall.
A few minutes later, she came back with a
woman who introduced herself as Shelly, part
of the D&D brand team. Shelly handed our
son a bag full of D&D goodiespencils, stick-
ers, books, T-shirts, some polyhedral dice (ev-
ery players key accessory), and a pre-release
copy of the Starter Set for the long-awaited
D&D Version 5, which wouldnt o cially come
out until July 15. My sons eyes got about three
sizes bigger.
They went beyond just giving him corporate
swag, however. Shelly told us that she had told
the D&D product team in the back that there
was a boy in the lobby looking for an elf wizard
miniature. Since the team members were also
long-time players, they each had extensive
personal collections of gurines at their desks.
One found an elf wizard for us, a gesture that
touched us all.
Shelly also took a photo of our whole fam-
ily with Mitzy, which we said would use on our
family holiday card this year. We thanked her
and Angela profusely before leaving.
As if that wasnt good enough, later that
day I went to the Wizards website to get the
full Version 5 rules (which theyd just made
available for free download) to read on the
plane home.
Lo and behold, but the new rules urge play-
ers to: Think about how your character does
or does not conform to the broader cultures
expectations of sex, gender, and sexual be-
havior. . . . You dont need to be conned to
binary notions of sex and gender. For exam-
ple, the rules say, some elves are made in the
image of a god who is often seen as androgy-
nous or hermaphroditic, and You could also
play a female character who presents herself
as a man, a man who feels trapped in a female
body, or a bearded female dwarf who hates
being mistaken for a male. Likewise, your char-
acters sexual orientation is for you to decide.
Many of us LGBTQ players (and maybe
even some straight, cis ones) have been bend-
ing our characters genders and sexual ori-
entations for years, but its terric to see the
game o cially embrace this.
I was surprised, therefore, to learn that Wiz-
ards parent company, Hasbro, only scored
a 25/100 on the most recent HRC Corporate
Equality Index. (Competitor Mattel scored a
95.) Despite the lackluster score, its equal op-
portunity policy does include sexual orienta-
tion, and it has not participated in actions that
would undermine LGBTQ equality, according
to HRC. It seems to me, then, that it might be
persuaded to improve its policies, especially if
a subsidiary like Wizards is publicly embracing
an inclusive view of gender and sexuality. It
doesnt take a D&D perception check to know
thats good business.
In the meantime, thanks to the Wizards of
the Coast employees who made one 11-year-
old elf wizard and his moms very happy.
Drivers, bikers, walkers,
riders, businesses share
same small streets
What is it about D.C. and bicyclists?
Maybe the nations capital really is a home-
town for third-rail topics. Do we ght-to-the-
death our nonsensical pitched battles and
relentlessly defend external cultural signiers
because we live at the national ground zero
for identity politics?
One can almost imagine the pre-arrival dia-
logue between two partners on the way to a
dinner party: Now, remember, dont ask John
about his job that he lost two weeks ago, Su-
san is no longer pregnant and, please, dont
tell that story about almost hitting that guy on
the bike who swerved in front of you on the
way home last week. You know how sensitive
Robert is about bike lanes.
Regardless of the cause or reason, Wash-
ingtonians have become entirely too agitated
about bicycle anxiety both those who ride
them and those who dont.
In recent years, and during local political
campaigns, bikes have even become symbolic
proxy for the many demographic upheavals
and economic tidal waves crisscrossing the
city. Well, along with dog parks, that is.
Last week the city had another one of its pe-
riodic explosions of hot tire air. Prompted by a
provocative and partly tongue-in-cheek, over-
the-top opinion piece by Washington Post col-
umnist Courtland Milloy, hatin was hurlin fast
and furious. It followed a somewhat scolding
transportation column by colleague John Kelly
reminding bicyclists of the riding-on-sidewalks
prohibition in the downtown commercial area
and pedestrian angst over violations.
There were quick calls for the newspaper
to re longtime columnist Milloy. (Really? Yes,
really.) The famously near-universality of bik-
ing acionados among bloggers and alterna-
tive media reporters fueled some of that, but
it was a road wed all been down before. No
one needed a street map to know where we
were headed.
Soon a protest ride from Dupont Circle
to the Posts o ces was announced, draw-
ing approximately 40 bikers, to demand that
Milloy engage in dialogue on the matter.
Television crews interviewed smug bicyclists
miming that oh-so-trendy and despicable re-
tort to disagreeable opinions referring to
them as unacceptable words and unaccept-
able thinking. One imagined a lurking hate
speech allegation.
We are talking about bicycles, people, only
bikes. Those slender self-powered metal
objects utilized for transport and that many
worldwide, especially the poor and low-skill
workers in many places, use to get to and
from jobs and tasks. While D.C. has a relatively
robust bike riding and sharing rate among U.S.
cities, its possible to count on ngers and toes
the number youre likely to see pedaling to
work and home each day on a commute by
foot, bus, subway, taxi or car. A near-negligible
percentage of residents use a bike as a com-
muting or transit method.
Yes, D.C. is a wonderfully walkable, livable
and bike-able place with a full array of trans-
portation options. Ive lived in Washington for
more than three decades and have never
owned a car.
Bicyclists need to release some air out of
their tires. I suspect they may be clueless how
irksome many perceive the tiresome whining
that biker desires are not being met, there
arent enough dedicated bike lanes, theyre
inadequately lauded as environmental angels,
they shouldnt be subject to common courte-
sies or city rules.
Its time for bikers to make the transition
from roadway rebel to responsibly sharing the
same small streets. It wont be easy, alongside
all the cars, taxis, buses, someday-streetcars,
pedestrians, business delivery trucks and
other vehicles crammed on the citys narrow
thoroughfares. It is dangerous out there.
Lets also try to remember that this is not
one of D.C.s most pressing problems. In a
now only-pseudo-booming city teetering on
the edge of a metropolitan area recession
where housing costs are skyrocketing, job
creation is halting, homeless people are lan-
guishing in a morass of misery despite wildly
out-of-control service costs due to govern-
ment mismanagement, hyper-sensitive two-
wheel drama reads ridiculous.
Lets keep that in mind while we nally start
acting adult about accommodating mutual ac-
cess and shared usage.

Big Bad Woof, Doggy Style
and others popular with
gay pet owners
By JUSTIN PELIGRI
The District was recently rated the
nations most walkable city, which should
come as no surprise for D.C.s dog
walkers. Are you looking for a new place
to take your pet?
Frequent dog walkers might already
be familiar with the members-only dog-
walking program at Congressional
Cemetery (1801 E St., S.E.). Dogs are
encouraged to traverse the 35-acre
expanse without leashes. Members of
the Congressional Cemetery dog walking
community also participate in springtime
yappy hours and volunteer opportunities.
For more information about the program,
visit cemeterydogs.org.
Established in 2008, the Shaw Dog
Park (11th between Q and R streets,
N.W.) has become a favorite among
local pet owners largely because of its
15,000-square-foot fenced-in space,
which allows dogs to run freely while
their owners socialize. Use of this dog
park is free and has separate areas for
large and small dogs. For updates on the
park, follow @ShawDogPark on Twitter or
visit shawdogs.org.
The dog park at 17th and S streets
is a smaller, more intimate experience
for dogs. Take your pet to this Astroturf-
clad park, nestled between Dupont and
Logan circles. Or head out of town with
your dog to Shirlington Park (2601 S.
Arlington Mill Dr., Va.), a long and narrow
park adjacent to a stream where dogs
frequently go for dips.
The city oers far more than dog walks
for pet owners looking to splurge on
their furry friends. This summer, dont
miss out on these great, gay, pet-friendly
destinations across the capital.
If youre looking to take in the sun
with your dog, the rooftop at City
Market at O (P Street between 7th and
9th streets, N.W.), which boasts a dog
park and grooming stations, is the place
to go. While dogs are enjoying luxury
treatment, pet owners can indulge at
the establishments fully equipped gym,
yoga and spin studio and spa. For more
information, visit citymarketato.com.
If your dog is hungry after letting loose
at the dog park, pick up some socially
conscious dog food at Big Bad Woof
(117 Carroll St., N.W. and 5501 Baltimore
Ave., Hyattsville, Md.) a lesbian-owned
pet store selling large selections of eco-
friendly and organic pet supplies for
dogs, cats, birds and small mammals.

Drew Fisher grew up on a farm, so there were always plenty of animals
around. He realized his love for them early on.
I love that you can go home, no matter what kind of day youve had, and
theres always that little creature there ready to love you no matter what,
the 27-year-old Calvert County, Md., native says.
Fisher started working in animal care when he was 16 working his way
up from cleaning out stalls to becoming a vet assistant to a vet technician
and now, physical rehab. For the last two years, hes been a canine physical
rehabilitation technician at Mid-Atlantic Animal Specialty Hospital in
Huntingtown, Md., where he works with dogs whove had knee surgeries.
Fisher has two dogs of his own Hank, 3, and Penny, 5, both French
bulldogs. He recently rescued Penny from a puppy mill where she was kept
with 150 other dogs.
Fisher, who commutes to his day job, moved to D.C. four years ago. He
also works two nights a week at Number Nine, where he started about two
months ago after four-and-a-half years at Cobalt.
Hes been dating Brynn Bennett for about a year and a half. Fisher lives in

Kimpton a good choice
when traveling with dogs
By JUSTIN PELIGRI
Jackson 20, the restaurant at Kimptons
Hotel Monaco, is known to host not
only hotel guests and local Alexandria
residents, its also a popular place for
dogs, especially during the hotels weekly
doggy happy hour.
The gay-friendly Kimpton franchise
welcomes guests furry friends at all their
hotels, but Hotel Monaco is one of the
only establishments in the District still
oering a happy hour explicitly geared
toward pets and their owners. The event,
which takes place Thursday evenings at 5
p.m., features complimentary dog treats
and water bowls in the hotels courtyard.
Annee Gillett, director of catering for
local Kimpton Hotels, says Alexandria locals
and out-of-town guests gather for doggy
happy hour because it fosters a sense of
community among dog lovers. She says the
diverse group of people enthusiastic about
the event including tourists and people
stopping by with their dogs after work
has enabled Hotel Monacos doggy happy
hour to remain open even as other dog-
friendly events at D.C. restaurants and bars
have gone out of fashion.
Theyre not just a pet but theyre
a member of the family and theyre
important to people, Gillett says. Its
important that we welcome everyone.
Things like the doggy happy hour give
guests an opportunity to come together.
Theyre really social events where everyone
chats and talks about their dogs.
Gillett owns Charlie, a 7-year-old Bichon
who works as the Kimptons director of
pet relations. He greets pets and owners
at the beginning of their stay at the hotel.
Guests with pets are often provided with
dog treats and a list of Charlies favorite
dog parks and local shops.
I travel with my dog all the time, Gillett
says. Without a Kimpton hotel, your
choices are pretty bleak.
The Kimpton has long been known
as an LGBT-friendly hotel chain, in part
through its partnership with the Trevor
Project. Even though same-sex marriage
is not legal in Virginia, about eight couples
have held wedding receptions at the
Hotel Monaco, according to Gillett.
Its awesome, she says. I dont know
of any other company that embraces the
LGBT community in such an open way.
But the hotels also make clear that
pets, especially dogs, are valued.
At all Kimpton Hotels, including the
eight in D.C. and three in Old Town
Alexandria, we oer a warm welcome to
any size, weight or breed of pet at no extra
charge, says Jaclyn Randolph, Kimpton
Hotels public relations manager, in an
email. We love and respect our furry
guests as much as our human ones.
Many events catering to dogs, including
doggy happy hours as well as a costume
event for dogs at Halloween and a Christmas-
time event featuring Santa Claus, also
function as charity events. In the past, the
Kimpton has collected donations for the
Animal Welfare League and Veterans Moving
Forward, a service that trains dogs to assist
veterans with physical and emotional needs.
The hotel has a pet-free oor for guests
who arent interested in sharing space
with non-human visitors. But Gillett says
that by and large, most hotel goers even
those who havent brought a pet along
with them are receptive to animals.
The majority of them love it. Even if
they dont have their dog, they think that
thats awesome that you can travel with
them. They say, Well, I can bring my dog
next time, she says, adding that many
people without pets enjoy petting and
playing with Charlie during their stay.
Were pretty open about what our
brand is and the things that Kimpton
embraces, she says. Maybe its not
everyones cup of tea, but people who like
animals tend to be nice people!

TALKING HEADS TRIBUTE
W/ HMFO: A HALL & OATES TRIBUTE
Musical adaptation
shaky but engaging
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Carrie: The Musical hits a nerve. After
years of torment, a high school outcast
bashes back with a nasty vengeance. Its
the ultimate school yard cautionary tale.
Like the best selling Stephen King novel
and the classic 1976 horror ick on which
its based, the musical looks at bullying
and strives to take it to scary heights. But
unlike cases ripped from todays inuring
news cycle, beleaguered Carrie White
doesnt wreak havoc with an automatic
assault weapon she uses special
powers to wipe out her tormentors.
A notorious op when it premiered on
Broadway in 1988, Carrie: The Musical
later succeeded as a reworked 2012
o-Broadway revival. Both adaptations
come from the creative team of original
screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohn, and
lyricist Dean Pitchford and composer
Michael Gore. Its this second version that
Studios 2ndStage is currently presenting
with Emily Zickler as the titular telekinetic
teen. Broadways talented Barbara Walsh
plays Carries fanatically religious single
mother Margaret.
The musical is told as ashback. Here,
Carries popular classmate Sue Snells
memory is jogged by unseen detectives.
Her face brightly spot lit, a shell-shocked
Sue (the likable Maria Rizzo in a subpar wig)
ploddingly explains how she unintentionally
set o a prom night massacre.
The plot kicks o when Carrie gets her
period showering after gym class and has
no idea whats happening to her. Skulking
around in her unfashionable baggy
sweater and long loose skirt, shy Carrie
already makes the perfect victim. The
shower episode adds one more arrow
to the quiver of insults regularly aimed
by the mean girls led by relentless Chris
Hargenson (Eben K. Logan) and her dim
deputy Norma (Dani Stoller); it also marks
Carries discovery of her ability to move
things via mind control.
Sue, the storys conscience, realizes
the bullying has gone too far. And young
gym teacher Miss Gardner (Jamie Eacker),
sympathetic to Carries plight, drives the
point home. But its too late. On prom
night Carrie is subjected to a particularly
cruel, and bloody, humiliation. Telekinetic
vengeance ensues.
Set in the high school gym and the
Whites place (ably designed by Luciana
Stecconi), it feels like two dierent shows.
Theres the student body stomping around
singing loud numbers reminiscent of the
angst ridden kids in Spring Awakening,
and Margaret and Carrie alone together
working out their odd but changing
relationship in songs like And Eve Was
Weak and When Theres No One.
Walshs portrayal of Carries dowdy,
man-hating mother is more self-contained
than her celluloid counterpart Piper
Lauries over-the-top messianic turn as
Margaret. Similar to the original lm,
warnings of Theyre going to laugh at
you echo throughout the Whites modest
home. Sadly, my favorite mother/daughter
pre-prom exchange with regard to Carries
uncharacteristically low cut party dress
didnt make the cut. (Margaret: I can see
your dirty pillows. Everyone will. Carrie:
Breasts, Mama. Theyre called breasts
and every woman has them.)
While the score is uneven and the
book thin, the non-Equity productions
cast (co-directed by Keith Alan Baker and
Jacob Janssen) is good. But the shows
telekinetic eects are a little cheesy and
the Grand Guignol climax is more messy
than horric. What works on the big
screen doesnt always make for great
musical theater.

Best to be honest with
high school sweetheart
DEAR MICHAEL,
My partner Craig and I have been
inseparable since middle school and
came out together as a proud gay
couple in high school. Our parents are
overwhelmingly supportive as are our
friends. They all have so much invested
in our relationship and its getting to be
so much pressure! What nobody knows
is that I have been feeling trapped over
the last year or so, as though I dont ever
remember actually making a decision to
spend my life with Craig.
Craig is a great guy and I love him.
However, hes now talking marriage and
kids. I realize thats the next logical step
and I dont know why Im so hesitant. We
mostly have a great time together with
many shared interests. We are both good
about household chores and encourage
each other in tness/health goals. We
are still great in the bedroom and try
new things with each other to keep it
interesting. I nd him more physically
attractive than ever, but neither of us has
ever had another sexual partner.
Am I missing out? Everyone else I know
has dated many people before settling
down. I dont want to end our relationship
or our lifelong friendship, but I cant shake
the feeling that when I am 50 I will regret
not having dated other people. Should I
put my life up to the vote of well-meaning
friends and family? Craig and I usually have
great communication, but this issue has me
too terried to openly discuss it with him
because Im afraid of what this means.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
You are wise to be trying to decide for
yourself whats right for you rather than
responding to pressure from others.
Before you get married or have a child,
you denitely want to have both feet in.
Id like to oer a few ideas to help you
move forward.
You say that youre terried to be on
a dierent page from Craig, but I want
to reassure you that nothing is wrong.
People often arrive at dierent life
stages at dierent times and now that
is happening to the two of you. It makes
sense that you might be hesitant to marry
your rst and only boyfriend whom youve
been with since middle school, just as it
makes sense that Craig might be ready to
tie the knot after so many years together.
If you keep all this to yourself, youre
likely to continue to feel trapped. But if
you talk, youll be taking a risk because
you dont know how Craig will respond.
Maybe hell recognize that youre making
a brave and intimate move to let him
know you better and the two of you will
have the opportunity to learn how to
be a strong couple despite having some
dierences. But he may also be hurt by
your revelation.
You face a similar dilemma if you
choose to date other guys. While you
may get the clarity and life experience
that youre seeking, you may also put your
relationship with Craig at risk. Again, you
will have to take a chance.
I understand your concerns about
missing out by not dating other people,
given that you met so young and Craig is
the only person youve ever been with.
Know that there are many couples who
meet when they are young and happily
spend their lives together, even if they
havent been with others. Also keep in
mind that there probably is no best
partner out there; everyone has some
pros and some cons and a relationship
that pushes you to take risks in order to
grow, just as is happening now with Craig,
is a good thing.
Life forces all of us to make big
decisions without knowing the outcome.
You can only do your best to determine
what is most important to you and accept
that it is impossible to get everything you
want in one person. You and Craig have
a lot going for you. I encourage you to
see your situation as an opportunity to
become stronger by learning out how
to navigate some di cult challenges.
And please remember that part of your
growth will come from tolerating a fair
amount of tension as you take the time to
gure this out.
Finally, if you get stuck, a therapist who
is skilled in relationship issues can help
you nd your own direction. I wish you
and Craig the best.

The souped-up SQ5 ts right in at any
Muscle Beach. This is the high-test version
of Audis popular Q5, but it sits lower to the
ground, has a stier suspension and hugs
corners like a thrill ride at Kings Dominion.
Toss in strong brakes and a fast 345-hp
engine and youll swear this is a Ferrari.
Yet theres plenty of room, even in the
backseat. The glitzy interior has faux-suede
trim, aluminum-clad pedals and a thick, at-
bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters.
An easy-to-use nav system with Google Maps
has a large screen and the primo stereo is
perfect for dance-hall divas. Mileage is so-so
and the price will scare away some buyers,
but few compact crossovers combine this
much power and panache.
BMW X5 XDRIVE
$61,000
MPG: 19 CITY/27 HIGHWAY
0-TO-60 MPH: 6.1 SECONDS
To pump up the volume the interior
volume, that is the full-size BMW X5 oers
more room than the Audi SQ5. Theres even
a third-row seat, though its snug for adults.
And the split-opening power liftgate can be
operated via a remote. Design-wise, the X5
gets a complete redo, with a sleeker prole and
classier cabin. The 16-way power front seats
(heated/ventilated) are a hedonists delight,
as is the 16-speaker stereowith choice of
Harman Kardon or Bang & Olufson. Theres
a dizzying amount of safety gear: head-up
display, night vision, blind-spot monitor, lane-
departure alert, collision warning and antiroll
bars. For eco-geeks, a clean-diesel model ups
the gas mileage to 23 city/31 highway.
RANGE ROVER SPORT
$70,000
MPG: 17 CITY/23 HIGHWAY
0-TO-60 MPH: 4.6 SECONDS
With its shapely new look, stellar o-
roading skills and supreme snob appeal, the
Sport is king of the beach. Its now 400 pounds
lighter, to bolster fuel economy, but longer
and wider, which means more passenger
room (and, for the rst time, a third seat).
While the V6 model is ne, the 510-hp V8 is
wicked fast. Theres plenty of grip, thanks to
four-wheel drive, hill ascent/descent control
and a terrain system for better traction on
gravel, mud, sand, snow and even rocky
roads. The cabin is equally superb: four-zone
climate control, center-console cooler, rear-
seat entertainment system, 23-speaker audio
and heated/ventilated front and rear seats.
With this much glam, who needs a beach
house or hotel room?
VOLVO XC60
$40,000
MPG: 18 CITY/26 HIGHWAY
0-TO-60 MPH: 9.1 SECONDS
Long regarded as boxy and boring,
Volvos are now trim and taut. Thats why
the XC60 has a swimmers build, with well-
dened curves, six-pack grill and sexy tail
lights winding all the way up the rear pillars.
Inside, the dashboards center stack which
houses climate/infotainment controls has
brushed-medal trim and seems suspended
in mid-air. Two-tone upholstery also adds a
modish touch. Surprisingly agile, the XC60
has plenty of hustle (especially in the T6
turbo model, which hits 0-to-60 mph in seven
seconds). Volvos latest safety gizmos are here:
collision warning (with automatic braking),
driver-inattention alert and rear cross-tra c
monitor. Theres also a pedestrian-detection
system to avoid hitting cyclists, joggers and
others a big plus when looking for parking
on busy Rehoboth streets.

Gay Games vet focuses
on bowling this time for
practical reasons
By KEVIN MAJOROS
When Jeremy Glasser went to his
rst Gay Games in Sydney, Australia in
2002, he competed in both bowling and
tennis. Considering both sports run the
entire week of the Games, it was a lofty
undertaking. Added to that challenge was
the issue of dragging his bowling ball and
tennis racket half way around the world.
Next month, Glasser will compete in
his third Gay Games in Cleveland, his rst
on American soil, and will limit himself to
one sport.
For Cleveland, I chose to compete
in bowling because I can just throw my
bowling ball in the trunk of my car and
drive there, Glasser says. For Paris in
2018, I will probably choose tennis since
it will be easier to transport my racket.
Another reason for choosing bowling in
Cleveland is that he wants to defend his
gold medal in team bowling that was won
in the 2010 Cologne Gay Games.
Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, Glasser
played the obligatory little kids sports
such as T-ball and soccer. In junior high,
he coached volleyball but most of his
focus was on academics.
After moving to Washington, where he
works as a paralegal and is an alumni of
George Mason University, Glasser and
his partner at the time were looking for
something to do outside of the bar scene.
They joined an LBGT bowling league
in 1996 and Glasser has continued to
bowl with the Capital Area Rainbowlers
Association (CARA).
The bowling led to a season with the
Chesapeake and Potomac Softball League
and then the Capital Tennis Association.
Glasser is currently a member of both
CARA and the Association.
I bowl in a CARA league during the
winters and play on the CTA league in the
summers, he says. Bowling is my social
outlet and tennis is my exercise.
At the Gay Games next month, Glasser
will compete in the singles, doubles and
team events in bowling. He recently used
the Liberty Bell bowling tournament in
Philadelphia as a tune-up and will continue
to practice bowling weekly along with his
tennis play leading up to the Games.
Glasser has a few reasons for staying in
the sport of bowling for almost two decades.
I love the social aspect and there are
so many nice and friendly people, he
says. Since you dont have to be athletic, I
feel that bowling is inclusive of everyone.
All types of people can bowl.
Glasser, who is hearing impaired, is
active with the International Gay Bowling
Organization and serves as national Co-
Chair of the Deaf & Disabled Bowlers
Advisory Committee. Their goal is to give
everyone an opportunity to participate
and to foster a sense of belonging at
tournaments and events. They also
provide ASL interpreters and ensure that
all event venues are ADA compliant.
Another wonderful thing about
bowling is that the handicap pin count
scoring system allows an average bowler
to directly compete with a good bowler,
he says. Not every sport oers a chance
for all to feel equal.
Now 40, Glasser says that his favorite
thing about the Gay Games is the
opening ceremonies. Washington, D.C.
is generally the last team before the host
team to march into the stadium during
the parade of athletes.
Once Team DC comes into the stadium,
it is already packed with athletes and
fans. The noise level will be incredible and
I wont be able to stop smiling, Glasser
says. There is a real sense of acceptance
and belonging to a greater community.
He adds laughing, I mean the Pointer
Sisters are going to be there. Im so
excited. Right?

Turning a stressful
experience into an
enjoyable one
By JONATHAN NEAL
Moving is consistently identied as
one of the most stressful times in a per-
sons life, but moving into your new home
should be a wonderful and exciting ex-
perience. With careful planning and pro-
fessional help, the task can be much less
daunting and you can spend less time
stressing and more time enjoying your
new home.
Plan your move carefully and well ahead
of time. Depending on the amount of items
you need to move, you may require weeks
or months to plan. Call a reputable moving
company as soon as you decide that you
are moving and ask for a consultation.
Pack your least essential items rst
and the most essential items last. Fill a
box with moving day essentials like paper
plates, medicine, paper towels, toiletries,
all documents related to settlement and
closing of homes, checkbooks and a list
that includes your movers contact infor-
mation, in case of emergency.
Draw up a oor plan for where items
will all go in the new home, so that the
movers know exactly where all the furni-
ture should be placed. This will save you
time and money, and help you to avoid
injury or item damage, when the heavy-
lifters are gone! Also, label all your boxes
so your movers know where to unload
your personal items.
Call your moving company in advance
to nd out their protocol for inclement
weather conditions. If you see that the lo-
cal weather forecast is calling for severe
weather, call your moving company to
inquire about the possibility of reschedul-
ing your move. If weather conditions are
poor, but still feasible to move in, be sure
to remove any snow, ice or debris from
your driveway and loading area in ad-
vance of the movers arrival.
If you are in an area where there is no
proper driveway for moving trucks, make
sure you have reserved the appropriate
No Parking signs. To secure the signs,
you must call your local police precinct
by calling them on a non-emergency
line at least 72 hours in advance of
move day.
If you are moving into or out of a con-
dominium or apartment building with el-
evator access, you may need to reserve
use of the elevator for a block of time on
moving day. Typically, buildings have a 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. slot and 1-5 p.m. slot open,
for such uses. Check with your condomin-
ium or apartment building to see if there
are any blackout days where moves are
not allowed.
Disconnect electronics at least three
hours prior to moving day. Take pictures
so you will remember where the wires
are when you move into your new place.
Unplug, defrost and dry out your re-
frigerators and freezers at least 24 hours
before the move day. Additionally, avoid
packing liquids if the temperature outside
is freezing or below; liquids can expand, ex-
plode and ruin other items youve packed.
Dispose of or donate unnecessary items
before you move, so that you will not have
to pay to have items that you will not need,
boxed or brought to your new home.
Moving can be stressful, but with good
planning and the support of a skilled and
professional moving team, you can easily
make sure your move is a smooth, stress-
free experience.
