Sample essay 1
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying
abroad/working abroad for a period of time.
With the rapid development of society, we have entered an era of
information explosion. In order to acquire more knowledge, more and more
people decide to further their study abroad. Studying abroad brings about
many advantages. It widens students' knowledge and horizons, and
meanwhile cultivates their independence and personalities.

Firstly, students can learn advanced knowledge and experience abroad.
Since the reform and the policy of opening to the outside world, China has
strengthened cooperation with many countries. As a result, the scientific and
technological level has been improved very rapidly. However, compared with
the developed countries in the world, we still have a very long way to go.
Studying abroad provides opportunities to students, who can learn advanced
knowledge and management experience, so as to enhance the scientific level
in our country.

Secondly, studying abroad can cultivate students' ability to live
independently and their characters. Students have to deal with many
problems when they study abroad. They have to learn how to be
accustomed to a new environment and how to get along with the teachers
and classmates. During their study, they can acquire some interpersonal
skills.

Finally, studying abroad can provide a good language environment to
students and make it easy to pick up a language. Foreign language is a tool
employed to communicate with each other. It can remove language barrier
and make international cooperation much easier.

However, "Every coin has its two sides". Studying abroad also brings about
many disadvantages. Firstly, students will be confronted with so many
psychological problems. They often feel lonely and helpless in a new
environment. Furthermore, the tuition is very high, which is a very heavy
financial burden to the average people.

To sum up, the advantages of studying abroad outweigh the disadvantages
greatly. We encourage students to study abroad. When they accomplish
their curriculum, they can make more contributions to the construction of
our society. (313 words)

Sample essay 2
Every year thousands and thousands of people leave the comforts of their
homes to learn English in countries such as the United States, Canada,
England, and Australia. Many feel that by studying a language in a country
where it is spoken, they will be able to learn it more quickly. Others feel that
studying abroad gives them greater opportunity in their home country. It
may even lead to a better job. And quite a few people want to study abroad
for the pure pleasure and excitement it brings. However living and studying
in another country can also have its problems. Almost everyone experiences
some level of homesickness. And a few people go home earlier than
expected because their ideas about living in another country were different
from reality.
Firstly, studying abroad does not mean you will learn English magically.
Many people think that they just need to live in another country and they
will learn the local language. This is not completely true. You still need to
pay attention and study. There are people who live in foreign countries for
many, many years without knowing the language well. However, it will
probably come to you easier and faster than if you just studied the language
in your home country.
Secondly, studying abroad can be hard. You will probably have times when
you miss your family, friends, food, and everything familiar. Almost
everyone goes through some culture shock. You will have to realize and
accept that it will take some time to adjust to a new way of living.
Finally, studying abroad can be expensive. There is no doubt that it takes
money to study abroad. It can vary from kind of expensive to very
expensive. Most places don't allow international students to work. You will
have to have the money before you arrive in the country or have someone
from home support you.
There are many advantages though because you are surrounded by English.
You do need to pay attention and do some studying, but everything comes
faster when you do because English is everywhere: on the streets, in the
stores, on the TV. You cannot get away from it.
In addition your eyes are opened to the world. We often grow up thinking
that our way of doing things is the only way, or sometimes the best way. But
living in a new culture helps us realize new ways of doing things, and also
helps us to see that even though we are different, we are all human. And in
many cases, not only will you get to know the natives of the country you are
visiting, you may get to know classmates from all over the world.
Furthermore, you learn to take care of yourself. Living in another country,
even if it is with a host family, means you might be doing things you may
not have done in your home country. These include cooking, cleaning,
grocery shopping, washing clothes, figuring out transportation, making living
arrangements, setting up accounts for cell phones and utilities, etc. You may
think of this as a disadvantage, but many international students go home
proud that they have become very self sufficient.
Lastly, your life will be forever changed. One of the greatest things that
happens when you do something as big as live in another country is- you
become a changed person- your outlook on life is different. Your new
maturity can help lead you to new places in your life. You will make
memories that will last a lifetime.
In conclusion, studying abroad can really change your life. It can be a
wonderful experience and you will improve your English more quickly.
However it is not easy for everyone and there are many things you need to
adapt to.

home countries. Why do some students study abroad? Use specific
reasons and details to support your answer.
Sample TOEFL essay answer:
Pursuing higher studies abroad has become a popular choice for students
from around the globe. Each year, young people spend thousands of dollars
to travel, live and study in universities, colleges and schools overseas. In my
view, this life-changing decision is based on the premise that education is an
investment in ones future. My opinion is based on academic, professional
and personal reasons.
In my opinion, the primary reason for studying abroad is academic. Students
wish to reap the benefits associated with attending a reputable educational
institute. In addition, gaining admission to prestigious college or university is
often regarded as an achievement in itself. The quality of the academic
programs, the level of specialized instruction and the availability of
professional resources are all high. It is no wonder that students long to
graduate from well-known institutes.
From a professional viewpoint, graduating from foreign universities is often a
gateway to a successful career. The connection is direct and provides strong
motivation for young people to study abroad. The hope is that such
graduates have an added advantage over their peers in a highly competitive
job market. In some cases, top students from prestigious universities land
job offers even before completing their studies. Furthermore, well-known
corporations vie to attract the fresh new talent, who will help achieve
corporate profitability in the future.
From a personal angle, studying abroad enables young people to mature
quickly and develop independence. For instance, joining a foreign academic
institution is often the first experience students have of living away from
parents, siblings and friends. In ones home country, this strong nexus
provides support, assistance and guidance. However, while abroad, students
must overcome the initial homesickness and culture shock, conform to a
different teaching style, adapt to unfamiliar social and cultural expectations
and develop proficiency in a new language. These challenging tasks enable
youngsters to emerge with greater maturity and self-confidence.
In conclusion, the desire to study abroad is based on several concrete
benefits for students in terms of the present and the future. This is why
most students would gladly accept an opportunity to go abroad and would
work quite diligently to turn this opportunity into a resounding success.
When peoples standard of living increase, they often think about improving their knowledge
for a better life. To do that, they choose to study abroad where they can may get
progressive education (Should mention why abroad...why not your country). However,
everything has its advantages and disadvantages, so studying abroad is not an exception.
At first, I want to write about the advantages of studying abroad The advantages of getting a
professional or research degree in abroad are, (i) studying abroad is the same meaning of
getting good education system. We will may get a good schooling competitive environment
and education system with an active learning condition. For example, we can practise a lot,
so we can remember the lesson easily. Furthermore, there will have a lot of good lectures
that almost all of them are professors. They can help us answer our question in a resonable
way. Studying abroad also brings mordern learning and teaching equipment to us. We will
study in mordern laboratory with a lot of high technologies. Moreover, if we study abroad,
you will get better certificate and will have more job opportunities. (The example is not that
effective: say some shortcoming those are not easily available and accessible in your
country and bring forth with its advantages in foreign edu system...else the above
supposition is not at all rationalized)
The second advantage (ii) studying abroad also incite me with vitality to interact with diverse
culture and nation of demography such as in ......is that we will get more challenging
enviroment. Everyting will be new and different so we have to take care of ourself. We have
to learn how to organise our life by ourself and to be responsible for what we do. From all of
that, we will be more mature and self confident. A friend of mine is studing abroad. He has
studied at Australia for 5 years. Before going abroad to study, he didnt care about study
and lives very careless. But now, I can see that he has changed a lot. He becomes more
responsible and very interested in study.
The last advantage of studying abroad I want to mention is that we will have chance to get
new experience. Firstly, we will experience new cultures. We can meet a lot of people from
every different countries and make friend with them. In my opinion, nothing is happier than
we can enjoy local foods and drinks. Im sure that everybody like this. Secondly, we have
opportunities to travel. We can explore the citywe are sutying in. After the tight classes, we
can take excursion with classmate to many tourist attractions. We can see many beatiful
landscapes at first hand, not through pictures like before. Another wonderful thing is that
you can experience modern means of transport such as tube or cable cars. Thanks to every
experiences that studying abroad brings to us, our life will become more interesting and
beatiful.
I have just written about the avandtages of studying abroad. As I mentioned at the
beginning, everything has its advantages and disadvantages. So does studying abroad. In
my opinion, there are two main disadvantages of studying abroad. Firstly, stuyding abroad
is often expensive. We have to pay not only for our school fees but also for our living cost
such as for foods, for drinks and so on. Moreover, we have to pay a large amount of money
for air ticket. Therefore, finace may become the biggest problem. Consequently, its distracts
our mind from studying to earning money. Secondly, about the enviroment. The new
enviroment is advantage but it also is disadvantage of studying abroad. It is very hard to be
alone far far away from home with no family, so we will be lonely and homesick. In addition,
we will have health problems because of foods, drinks or the weather change. Furthermore,
different cultures and customs may influence our mind and make us become less confident
or even a victim of discrimination. If we dont have enough physical and mental strenght, we
will fail to adjust ourself in the new enviroment. As a result, we could neither study or gain
beatiful experiences as we have expected.
In conclusin, while sudying abroad offer great opportunities for a better future, it also has
challenges that we must try our best to overcome what happened to make our dream come
true. (Conclusion should contain the intermidiate thesis staements of all paragraph)
