Fun facts about Cape Town
Table Mountain is 3,567 ft (1,087 m) high. The summit is flat, and the dense
white mist / cloud that often covers it is called the "tablecloth." The cableway was
built in 1929 and carries visitors to the summit.
Evidence of human inhabitants near Cape Town can be dated back to over
100,000 years. From the early nomadic Khoisan inhabitants to the European
Settlers. Jan van Riebeek arrived in the Cape of Good Hope on the 6th April 1652.
Cape Town was originally named by Bartolomeu Dias as the Cape of Storms.
This was because of the terrible storms he had to endure on the East Coast of
Cape Town. It was later renamed as the Cape of Good Hope, to please the king
of Portugal. The change was made to give the impression that the cape provided
hope for a sea route to the East.
Dr Christiaan Barnard, at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, performed the
first human heart transplant in the world in 1967. He was also the first to do a
heart-lung transplant in 1971.
Cape Town is about 3 times the size of New York City, but has 5.25 million
fewer inhabitants! That puts about 23,000 people fewer per particular sq mile.
