Montage
Description: Create an inspirational montage that blends one or two images together.
Programs used: Photoshop
Date: May 31, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and fow
-Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message
-Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. (Two or more images)
-Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.
-Use a mask to apply a flter to one part of the image (Copy the layer, then add the flter
and mask it out on part of the image. If not an artistic flter, try sharpen > Unsharp mask,
or Blur > Gaussian Blur.)
-Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
-Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
-Select good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels)
Process: First I found the image for the background. I did not do anything special to it.
Then I thought of the picture of my sister with a horse that she sent home from her mis-
sion. I blended it into the background using the mask tool. Before I did that I made the
photo black and white. Then I smart sharpened it a bit. I liked how the post showed the
rule of thirds, and I made sure that everything was aligned with something else.
Photodesign
Description: Demonstrate good photography skills along with Photoshop editing.
Take original photo and make a poster layout.
Programs used: Photoshop
Date: May 24, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Learn basic photography skills.
-Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the
colors into the layout.
-Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
-Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for
NDE (non-destructive editing.)
-Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
-Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
-Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.
Process: First I took some picture from around campus demonstrating certain
designs like rule of thirds, background focus, foreground focus, lead room, inside
light, and outside light. Tis picture of the Spori was to demonstrate outside light.
Afer I uploaded this onto the computer I edited it in Photoshop. I edited the levels,
selected colors, vibrance, and I sharpened the building and trees. Ten I added the
text. I found a quote from Jacob Spori, who the building was named afer, and chose
colors, and fonts, and styles. I also added an outside glow so that the black would
not clash with the blue sky so much.
Brochure
Description: A two-page brochure using four images, one with a text wrap, and an
original logo.
Programs used: InDesign
Date: July 12, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
-Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.
-Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including
the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the
text follows the cutout shape of the image.
-Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs, headers,
and subheaders.
-Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process: I made this entire brochure in InDesign. First I had to fgure out the
measurements so that when I printed it and folded it, it would look like a brochure.
Then I chose the color scheme, which is just black and white because that is what
my logos original colors were. I chose some pictures of books, magazines, and
newspapers and made them black and white in Photoshop then placed them in
InDesign. For the picture that I text wrapped I did the same thing, but I also used
the quick selection tool to get rid of the picture background. I used alignment to put
in the pictures and quotes on the inside page. I also wrote 250 of my own words for
the inside information.
Description: A full-bleed color Event Ad that was created only with Microsoft Word and a
scanned image.
Programs used: Word
Date: May 17, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
-Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
-Create a full-bleed design.
-Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
-Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process: First, I scanned the image of the runners. In Word only I then blurred and set the picture
to grayscale leaving the front runner alone. Then I did some sketches to decide what I wanted it to
look like. I added the triangles because when I see them I think of fags which reminds me of relays.
They also remind me of a track that has arrows. I chose the colors based on what the runner was
wearing and it worked out because it was triadic on the color wheel. I chose a fowing script font for
the title because it reminds me of the movement of running.

Logos
Description: Three different logos for the same company.
Programs used: Illustrator
Date: June 7, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Create three completely different, original logos to ft a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs.
-Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fab fares, symbols, etc. No
photos or auto live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/
pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)
-Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.
Process: I used Illustrators for this project. I used what I learned from the activity to make
the pizzas in the second logo. I used the pen tool to create them and added a shadow. I messed
around with a lot of different fonts until I found some that worked well with the logo. I really like
the Apple Chancery font used in the frst two logos. I had to really think about the color scheme
so I used what I have learned about that while creating the logos.

shapes. I didnt have any special logo image or design that I wanted. The tools that I used
were the rectangle tool, the text tool and the color palette.

Webpage
Description: Webpage that shows a personal logo
Programs used: TextWrangler
Date: June 28, 2014
Course: Comm 130: Visual Media
Section: 5
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objective:
-Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500
pixels.
-Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target
audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience,
design skills, etc,)
-Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use TextWrangler (Macin-
tosh) or NotePad++ (Windows))
-Identify hex colors for web design. (Find and use hex colors in Photoshop to match your
logo)
-Compress multiple fles in a zipped folder to attach as one fle.
-Open your HTML page in a web browser, and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch
margins for printing. (See tutorial below.) See the sample projects on this page as examples
(contains 3 fles: .css fle; linked logo .png; .html fle of web page.)
Process: I used TextWrangler to create this webpage. I have taken a web design class so I
knew how to do html and css already but TextWrangler was a new program for me. It was
fun to create a website for my own logo. I used Photoshop to fnd the black, white, and gray
colors using the eyedropper tool. I chose certain fonts that ft with my already made logo.
