The Institute has a glorious past of more than 165 years old. Started as Thomson College of Engineering in 1847. It was named as University of Roorkee in 1949 and then was then given the esteemed IIT status on September 21st,2001.

The institute spares no efforts to groom the students, not only in their chosen discipline, but also broaden their mindsets and create positive attitudes . This equips them with all qualities to make them an asset to whichever institute/organization they may join. Undergraduate students undergo an six to eight-week training/internship in reputed organizations, both in India or abroad. The MCA students undergo a training of 6 months during their last semester of the course. Now more than ever, the emphasis is on the Institute Industry Interaction ,Both the Institute ,conducting the Campus Recruitment programme, and the Industry, participating in the same are bound to find it mutually beneficial.

I would like to invite you to this serene and pious Campus for the recruitment in your esteemed organisation.in the same are bound to find it mutually beneficial. Looking forward for a long lasting

Academic Structure of Programmes

Institute Core

The institute core courses are common to all B.Tech/B.Arch./IDD programs and are planned to give the students a firm base. These include courses on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering sciences, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Biotechnology and Management.

Departmental Core

The departmental core consists of courses considered essential for a chosen discipline, including laboratory courses, practical training and a major project.

Departmental Electives

The departmental electives are related to the chosen discipline but are designed to offer deeper insight in specialized courses.

Institute Electives

The institute electives are the courses offered by different academic Departments/ Centers to the students of other disciplines. The students are free to select a number of courses from a basket of courses offered, depending upon their interests and their course structure.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of extra-curricular and sports activities with a view to develop to their overall personality and groom a student to be an engineer-manager.

Proficiencies

Proficiencies are courses integrated in the academic curriculum with the intent to encourage and hone the co-curricular skills of the students. In each semester students have the opportunity to select from a plethora of options like debating, sports, stargazing, choreography and many more.

Summer Internship

All the programmes (Undergraduate and IDD) mandate an industrial internship complementing the institute's academic curriculum with practical industry experience. The idea is to expose the students to that domain of work which enables them to appreciate the deviations from theory at the ground level. This not only ensures the students a promising on-the-job training experience but also ensures an exposure indispensable to gain a wider and a richer perspective of their discipline.

Physical recreation through games and sports has been an integral part of the Institute since its inception. The Lion Trophy, the most prestigious and coveted prize in sports was instituted in 1912. The Institute is equipped with exemplary facilities in a number of sports and awards proficiencies in 14 games. The legacy continues, as students of the institute take advantage of the marvelous sports facilities to excel in sports and games. In order to motivate the students and to sustain their interest in sports, a special scheme of NSO (National Sports Organisation) has been started from the session 2007-08.

Cognizance: The Technical Festival

Though younger than most of its counterparts, Cognizance has improved in leaps and bounds to become one of the biggest technical events of the country. The last edition attracted participants from 450 institutes from across the country, thus making it the second largest technical fest in Asia. Aimed at providing a platform for showcasing the best and the latest innovations in the world of technology, the event also boasts of a plethora of lectures and workshops by some of the biggest names in the field. The total number of papers presented across 16 disciplines is more than any other campus in the continent. Entirely managed by students, Cognizance provides opportunities for the aspiring scientists and managers alike. Cognizance is currently under the process of getting an ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Certification.

The annual cultural fest of IIT Roorkee has steadily grown into one of the largest youth festivals of the region. Its current status as the 'Official Youth Festival of Uttarakhand', bestowed on it by the Government of Uttarakhand, only ratifies the same. Every October, Thomso provides a platform for students from across the country to showcase their talent and vie for glory in a plethora of competitions. Additionally, the event is graced by some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment. With over 4 months going into its organization, Thomso provides the students of IITR an opportunity to interact with celebrities and corporate persons and thereby hone their creative and managerial skills. “Tarang” is another fest that IIT Roorkee boasts of, which is the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee's Saharanpur Campus.
