Session: 2014 - 2015 Name of faculty member: PRAKHAR RASTOGI Designation: LECTURER Department: EN Name of the subject: ELECTRO-MECHANICAL ENERGY CONVERSION-I Subject code: NEE 301 Semester: 3 rd
1. Course objectives: This course is intended to introduce the basic principles of electrical energy to be converted to mechanical energy and vice-versa. This will introduce the magnetic & insulating materials used in the construction of electrical machines and transformers. The course will expose the students to detailed working of D.C. machines as motors and generators and those of Single and three phase transformers.
2. Learning outcomes: The outcome of this course would be a thorough knowledge of DC machines and Transformers.

1. Show that the energy stored in a magnetic field is equal to the area between the -I curve for the system and the flux linkage () axis. 2. Show that the field energy in a magnetic system is given by: W f = 1/2Li 2 = 1/2 i = (1/2L) 2 . 3. Distinguish between singly excited and doubly excited systems. 4. For a singly excited linear magnetic system, derive an expression for the electromagnetic torque. 5. Define field energy and co-energy. 6. Why most practical energy conversion devices use magnetic field as the coupling medium between electrical and mechanical systems?
