Weekly Headlines

Membership and Extension
Each month in the Rotary calendar from August through to June is allocated a theme. The
themes enable clubs, which wish to do so, to do something in each month that relates to
the monthly theme. See the latest Program on our Website.
August is themed as the Membership and Extension month. This gives the club an
opportunity to promote Rotary within the community with a view to attracting greater
interest and potential new members. Our Membership Coordinator, Sue R, has potential
members in the wings, and we will hopefully be seeing them at our meetings in August.
If you know of anyone within our community who would like to know more about Rotary
and come along to a meeting, August is the month for you to act. A myth that abounds
about Rotary is that you have to be invited to join. While this may be true in a formal
sense, it does not mean people cannot ask about Rotary and what being a Rotarian
means. We should ensure that our community knows our door is always open to
prospective members and all they have to do is make contact.
Humanity in Motion now in waiting rooms
The Humanity in Motion Down Under publication has been
distributed to local practitioners to place in their waiting
areas and be read by community members visiting these
practices. We all have to sit and wait sometimes, and often
joke about the dated reading material. Now our local
community will have a chance to peruse an up-to-date
professionally-published collection of articles about humanitarian projects carried out by
Rotary organisations around Australia.

Editors Note
Welcome to the third issue of
the Jerraganda for the 2014-
2015 Rotary year.
We have a soccer theme this
week to mark the occasion of
the World Cup and especially
the victors - Germany the
home of our soon to be
exchange student.

If you have any content you
feel would be of interest to
members, why not send it in.
There will be a prize at the
end of the year for the best
contribution.

Weekly Meeting Summary

Meeting number 801 - 17 July 2014
A short meeting from a business perspective, but with two excellent Me Talks and some good fellowship.
Meeting commenced at 6.30pm
Welcome:
President Paul welcomed everyone
to meeting 801, and invited PP
Paul to give the Charge to
Australia, followed by a toast to RI
by Glenn.
President Paul then welcomed
Marie-Claire (a guest for 5
meetings) and Vera our most valuable supporter.

Apologies:
Mez reported apologies from
Rebecca (travelling overseas),
Anton (work commitment), Jon
(overseas), and Lynne and Kerry
(family commitment). David S,
David B, and Lizzie are on LoA.
Reminder: Members who are unable to attend
meetings are requested to provide apologies in
advance to the attendance officer.
From the Desk of the President:
President Paul advised that despite best laid plans the
much anticipated induction of Marie-Claire had been
postponed (again) to enable Anton (as sponsor) to be
present. If all goes well, Marie-Claire will be inducted as
a member at next weeks meeting.
Pres Paul also reported that Rebecca had been involved
in a car accident last Saturday, but was not hurt and was still able to head off to
the US for her holiday, sporting the odd bruise. Pres Paul thanked Pam for once
again fulfilling her Welfare duties and
ensure all was well with Rebecca.
The new Front of House stall has arrived, however some aspects were not
as ordered and replacements are on their way. As such the stall will not
be avilable for this weeks markets but should be ready for action by the
weekend of 26
th
July.
MS Australia has advised that in future for continuity the annual MS 24
Hour Swim will now always be held on the first weekend of May. This will
make our planning easier. Pres Paul also noted that news of our District
Award for Community Service in respect of our work with the MS Swim
has been included on the MS Website and Facebook site, with a suitable
congratulatory message from MS Australia. President Paul has also agreed
to be on this years MS Go for Gold Awards selection committee a role
that First Lady Sue did last year.

General Business:
Meal Costs. Well it had
to happen Mez
reported that after many
years of wondering how
the General Store
provides our meals at
such a low cost, the store have advised that
they are reluctantly raising the per-head
charge by $1.50 to $13.50. Members were
happy to accept this meal cost increase.
The new costs will kick in from the next meeting (24 July).
Changes to the General Store. Mez also advised that the Store is now under new management (a local
Jerrabomberra owner) and that while staff will remain the same the new management team have plans for
changes to the store, with new coffee machines, new stock, and alternations to the side room to become a
coffee and juice bar with all day breakfasts at the weekends. (Editors note: hopefully Eggs Benedict will be on
the menu?)
School Quiz Night. Chris advised the annual school quiz night will be on Saturday 30 August. We traditionally
support this event with a strong team, and this year will be no exception. One table has been reserved in the
Clubs name. Let Glenda know if you want to be in on this fun night.
Warm Nuts at the Markets. Sue J reported that she had found the hot chestnuts sold at the market stall across
from the Rotary FoH stall, to be very useful for keeping in your trouser pockets on a cold morning. Members
found this to be amusing! (Editors note: The comments from the floor are unable to be printed in this family
edition of the Jerraganda. However members did understand the advice Sue was trying to impart regarding the
value of having warm nuts).
Wine Trip. Pres Paul advised members that the Wine Tour had been confirmed for Sunday 26 October. While
realising this clashes with the School Fete (being held on a Sunday for the first time), there were no other
suitable dates this side of Christmas to have the Wine Tour. While this means we may not have a stall at the
Fete, we will have membership promotion activities at the Fun Run the following weekend and we are also
planning a Rotary promotion at the Big Shops in the future. Members were supportive of the decision.

Me Talks
As part of the program this year, we will be re-introducing Me Talks by our members. These talks enable us all
to learn a little more about each other, and usually include a few memorable and humorous anecdotes. This
week was no exception with very entertaining talks from Peter Jarvis (Charter President) and soon to be
newest member Marie-Claire. A few highlights:

Peter started life in Sydney in 1944, but grew up in a few places, including Wyalong,
Lavington, and Bathurst. It would appear he had a penchant for pranging cars,
including his Dads when 12 yrs old, and his Bosses while at teachers college. While
a teacher at Kempsey he was almost responsible for burning down the school. When
not setting fire to the school he was prone to taking naps in the afternoon and
letting the oldest student take the class often waking to find everyone had gone
home. Along the way Peter met Sue and they were married in 1967. In 1982 they
went to live and teach on Christmas Island where he took up scuba diving and
singing (Yam Singing of Chinese brandy). Since retiring from teaching he has been working in Corrections.
Peters loves include Sue and the kids, fishing, rotary and reading. His hates include gardening, question time
in parliament, and TV shows on house renovating.

Marie-Claire shocked us all by revealing she was indeed Irish (BJesus said Paddy). She then elaborated to
mention she was born to Irish parents in Leamington Spa (England) but grew up back home in Ireland. Marie-
Claire comes from a family of 5 children all fantastic. Her first occupation after school and college was as a
cuddly toy maker but that business collapsed due to competition coming in from
Taiwan. She then went to New York for a year to discover she was actually born to live
there, but could not stay and returned to Ireland to become a fitness instructor. From
aerobics she progressed to working for a hotels and resorts company, and moved into
the training section where she got to travel to US, Canada, France, and England. Along
the way, she was married for 22 months and vowed to never do that again. After 12
years back in Ireland recession hit pretty bad and she had broken her vow by getting
to know Eugene. Eugene headed off to Australia to find work and Marie-Claire joined
him here in April. After rejecting Queensland and Sydney she now loves the Jerra area.
She got her job at BoA by door knocking and handing out her resume rather than doing online applications.
The IRA tactics worked and Anton employed her. Anton then introduced Marie-Claire to Rotary and we know
the rest.
Market Master:

Anton was an apology for the night (working). Jan reminded the marketeers for the weekend
(Chilly, Kerry and Lynne) of the car parking arrangements and one-way system.

Joker:
Pam then ran the evenings joker. Marie-Claire was asked to make the draw and drew out a
ticket belonging to Peter J. Given that the prize pool had been reset to zero after Terrys big win
last week, Peter was not too keen to win and obliged by drawing out the Ace of Spades. The
jackpot now stands at $14.
Terry advised that he still had no idea as to the amount he had won as the acting treasurer is
being very quiet.
SGT Fines:
Chris took on the fines sergeant role this week and managed to extract a
healthy $71.70 from the attendees.
Terry was noted to have a new man purse bearing a strange resemblence
to his Pams favorite collectable. (And who could that be photo bombing in
the background again).

Attendance:
Mez once again managed some creative accounting and reported that 16 members
were in attendance, however four members are on LoA overseas, 2 had make-ups, and
Alex, Vera and Marie-Claire make up for the other apologies. The attendance figure for
the night was therefore calculated at 90%. In response President Paul once again
offered Port and Baileys for the enjoyment of all at the end of the meeting. (Looks like
this is going to become a weekly occurrence).

Meeting closed at 8.28pm followed by fellowship and consumption of the Presidents Port/Baileys.

Weekly Market Report 12 July 2014

This weeks report submitted by Robert (aka Chilly) Chilman
The day started out a lovely -2 degrees that around 10am became
pretty horrible with the cold (icy) wind picking up.
Lynne fielded the questions at the FoH table and reckons that if she
had a dollar for everyone that asked where the ATM had moved to, we would have made a fortune. (The ATM
has moved to the opposite side of the outdoor area to encourage patron flow to that side of the market).
On the lost property side of things a bunch of keys was handed in, but was quickly claimed, unlike a nice pair of
wool and leather gloves that were not claimed. Parking duties were okay, apart from the usual few who cant
seem to comply with simply instructions and signs. Crowds were good, especially early on, and everything went
pretty smoothly.

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary
Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the
joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter
President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was
chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in
numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at
the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for
the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the
winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The
design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent
to the Community Centre.
We continue to be a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and
internationally. Our motto is Doing Good and Having Fun

Dont forget to send your Jerraganda contributions to the
Editor. There will be a prize at the end of the year for the best
contribution.
