What Do the People Say in
Regards to Abi Talib (peace be upon him)?

It has been narrated in a Øad¢th found in Bi¶°r al-Anw°r1 that the following discussion took place between
Im°m Ja`far ibn Mu¶ammad as-Æ°diq (prayers be upon him) and `Amm°r al-S°b°ß¢ (may All°h be pleased with
him).

It has been narrated that Al-S°b°ß¢ asked Ab¢ `Abdill°h (prayers be upon him): “Surely the people claim that Ab°
=°lib is (presently) in the pits of the hell fire (what is your opinion on this)?”

He (Im°m Ja`far ibn Mu¶ammad as-Æ°diq, prayers be upon him) said, “These people lie! The (Angel) Jibra¢l did
not reveal such a thing to the Prophet (blessings of All°h be upon him and his family).”

The companion then asked, “So then what did he reveal (to the Prophet)?”

The Im°m (prayers be upon him) said to him: “Jibra¢l came to him (the Prophet) on some occasions and said, ‘O’
Mu¶ammad! Surely Your Lord conveys his greetings to you and He has said, ‘Surely the Companions of the
Cave (A•¶°b al-Kahf) concealed their ´m°n (true faith) and outwardly displayed polytheism (al-Shirk) and thus,
All°h gave them a double reward and surely Ab° =°lib concealed his ´m°n (true faith) and outwardly displayed

polytheism (al-Shirk) and thus did All°h give him a double reward (as well). He did not leave this world until
the good tidings came to him from All°h the Most High of him being granted Paradise.”

The Im°m (prayers be upon him) then said, “How do the people speak in such a way in regards to him (Ab£
=°lib) when on the night that Ab£ =°lib passed away, Jibra¢l came to the Prophet and said (to him), ‘O’
Mu¶ammad! Leave Makkah (now) since there is no other person who will be your helper and supporter after
Ab¢ =°lib.”
