Montage
Description: This montage represents the magic of childhood. It explores
the idea that maybe we all could experience magic again, but only
children do because they want to.
Programs used: Photoshop
Date: May 31, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and fow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements
Process (4-5 sentences): I designed this project entirely in photoshop.
It was hard, but probably my favorite project so far. I had about 4 other
projects that I completed and could have submitted in place of this one,
but I liked especially how the fairy turned out in this one. I started with
the photo of the child in the snowstorm, then placed the fairy image
over it and used a mask to take out the background around her, making
her blend with the image. I then inserted the text. Overall, it was time
consuming but rewarding.
Web Page
Description: This is my web page for the clothing company Americana
Clothing Co. Its meant to attract that demographic of young, hip twen-
ty-somethings.
Programs used: Notepad ++ and TextWrangler
Date: June 29, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use
TextWrangler (Macintosh) or NotePad++ (Windows))
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Must include all required tags
(Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), & body.
As well as tag that links to external style sheet. With in the body include
h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, hr, and a (link to blog) tags.)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the Cascading Style
Sheet (css) provided in I-Learn to add page formatting that complements
the logo design, by changing at least the following: The h1 text color
& background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the
background color, Font Families and add at least one css comment.
Process (4-5 sentences): My logo was designed to attract a young, hip
audience. This clothing store is supposed to be up on the latest trends, with
a vintage twist. I used Illustrator to create this logo, and tried to keep it very
simple and clean. I used the live trace tool to create the fag and tried to
give it that vintage, Americana feel. The logo color scheme and typography
was an efort to keep it simple as well. I then used the programs Notepad
++ and TextWrangler to write the code for the web page. I used a basic html
code and a style sheet and then added an image in to the background to
spice things up.
Brochure
Description: This is my brochure for the fctional company Americana
Clothing Co. I wanted to the brochure to have a little bit of a scrapbook
feel to it and be fun, yet simple.
Programs used: InDesign
Date: July 13, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images
(Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and
text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the
image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three
paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process (4-5 sentences): I mainly used indesign to create this brochure.
I found the photos online and inserted them into my document. I used
paragraph styling to format the paragraphs and headers to indent style.
My color scheme is analogous with yellow and green to keep it light and
fun. Overall, I tried to keep my design simple.
Logos
Description: These are my logo designs for the Americana Clothing Company.
They sell only American-made clothing.
Programs used: Illustrator
Date: June 8, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Create three completely diferent, original logos to ft a company or personal
image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated fares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an
image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the
image before submitting.)
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to
them.
Process (4-5 sentences): I designed these logos in Adobe Illustrator. It was a little
frustrating to learn how to use everything and defnitely took a lot of time to
fnd the tools I needed, but once I got the hang of it, it was great. I used images
found on the internet and traced them to create the logos portrayed. My ideas
vary a lot in design, but I think they have the same theme. Overall, Im proud of
the way they turned out.

Event Ad
Description: My event ad was to portray a beneft for the Save the Children
Foundation. The BYUI Charities Ofce was throwing a rafe to earn proceeds,
and winners would be able to play with exotic animals!
Programs used: Microsoft Word!
Date: May17, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.
Process (4-5 sentences): I used Word to design, which was diferent than I
thought it would be. I never knew Word had so many cool tools! I used a
scanned picture from a book in the library, which was interesting. It was a lot
easier to use than expected. I also was able to utilize the color scheme to pull the
whole project together.

Letterhead
Description: This is my letterhead for Proof Inc., a private detective agency.
Programs used: InDesign
Date: June 14, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to ft a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional
design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim
only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of
white space.
Process (4-5 sentences): I designed my letterhead and business card in InDesign.
I used the shape tools to build my magnifying glass. I wanted to do something
simple because the agency isnt big or fashy. It needed to look professional. I
used the magnifying glass watermark and just the P magnifying glass for the
back of the business card. The black and white color scheme was to keep it
simple.

FlYer
Description: This fyer is made to showcase a graduate leadership conference
for Vouant Communications. It is meant to look professional while still being
informative.
Programs used: Indesign
Date: May 12, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links
in InDesign intact.
Process (4-5 sentences): The program I used to create this fyer was InDesign in
the Adobe suite. Repetition of a block theme was used to pull the information and
fyer together. I used a gradient on the top blocks to pull the eyes inward towards
the Graduate Leadership Conference title. I pulled the pertinent information
together through use of the block theme to highlight important points, such as
the date and time, and the title.

Description: This project is meant to represent that the Lord has a higher way than
the common ways that we walk.
Programs used: Photoshop\
Date: May 25, 2014
Course # & Section: Comm 130, Section 02
Instructor name: Julie Peterson
Objective (see project page):
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate
the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers
for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.
Process (4-5 sentences): I used Photoshop for the edits. Learning how to change
color levels and lighting in this program was very helpful. I lightened and changed
the colors to make the blues more vibrant and stand out even more. I also made
the orange more vibrant on the buildings. It was hard to make it vibrant while
remaining natural-looking. Overall I learned some much!
