Awards/Success
The space business is an important part of ABB
Analytical Measurement and past projects have
been very successful. For instance, the ACE-FTS
instrument, originally designed for a two-year
lifespan, has been operating for nearly 10 years
on the SCISAT-1 satellite of the Canadian Space
Agency and still continues to provide excellent
scientific data of the Earths atmosphere. The
CrIS interferometers, built by ABB under a
$50-million contract, are among the most
sophisticated optical systems ever built for
weather applications.
In 2009, the Canadian Aeronautics and
Space Institute (CASI) awarded the SCISAT-1
team with the Alouette Award for outstanding
contribution to advancement in Canadian
space technology, applications, science and
engineering. In June 2006, ABB was presented
with a NPOESS Outstanding Supplier Award
from Northrop Grumman Corporation. Dr.
Henry Buijs, Chief Technical Officer at ABB,
was awarded the John Chapman Award from
the Canadian Space Agency in May 2011 for
contributions to the Canadian space program.

COM DEV, the largest Canadian designermanufacturer of space satellite hardware, has
more than 30 years of experience designing
and building space and defence products. It
produces microwave electronics and optics
systems, subsystems and other related
products for space satellites, science payloads/
instruments and complete micro-satellites/
missions used for satellite communications,
satellite broadcasts, space explorations and
earth observation/surveillance applications
by commercial, civil and military customers.
Depending on the year, 70% to 80% of COM
DEVs production goes to export markets
primarily in the U.S. and Europe.
COM DEV employs over 1,200 people in
four facilities located in Canada, the UK and
California. It counts all the major satellite
prime contractors and many governments
among its customers. COM DEV products are
onboard over 900 spacecraft representing
over 600 satellite programs.
Historically, COM DEVs core strength
has been building radio-frequency filtering
and switching products, particularly large
integrated multiplexing and switching
assemblies, for the commercial satellite
market. While these core products remain
an important part of the current product line
and the companys space heritage, today
COM DEV is also a leading-edge technology
source of space electronics, high-end SAW
devices, optical instruments, satellite search
and rescue transponders, microsatellites
and microsatellite mission solutions. Due
to this diversification, approximately half of
COM DEVs revenues now come from civil
government and military sales.
COM DEV also has a strong heritage of
cooperative development programs with,
and custom engineering solutions for,
Canadian, U.S. and European space agencies
and defence departments. COM DEV is CGP
cleared and invests heavily to make proficient
administration of ITARs and other export
regulations, a competitive discriminator.

Company Background
MSR was founded in 1979 as a supplier
of manufacturing engineering services to
McDonnell-Douglas during the conversion of the
Malton, Ontario, plant to wing manufacturing.
Our focus was on tool design, CNC
programming, process planning and
cost estimating. We continued to provide
services to companies such as Rolls-Royce,
Pratt & Whitney, Canadian Marconi, UDT,
Cooper Energy Systems, Bristol Aerospace,
General Dynamics and other aerospace and
defencecompanies.
In 2008 we began providing Should Cost
Estimating Services to Pratt & Whitney Canada
Corp. We competed against several companies
in the categories of quality, timeliness of
delivery, cost and relationship, and we are
the only supplier of this group continuing to
provide these services. On a recent report,
we were ranked 9 to 10 out of 10 in all these
categories. We have provided Should Cost
Estimating Services to PWC continuously since
the initial agreement in 2008.
MSR Inc. is registered with the Controlled
Goods Directorate in Canada.
What We Do
At MSR, we are 100% focused on detailed,
activity-based, Should Cost Estimates of
customers components and assemblies.
Prior to a supply chain negotiation or an
engineering design review, the customers
designated representative supplies MSR
with the data required to manufacture
the component or assembly. This usually
includes 2D drawings, supplementary product
information documents, 3D models, AMS
or AS specifications and any other pertinent
information.
We analyze material cost and usage and we
calculate labor time and cost, all based on the
manufacturing data provided and the activities
required to produce the item. We submit a
report to the customer in a universally readable
and interactive spreadsheet format. The
resulting Should Cost Estimates are fact-based,
accurate and dependable.
Customers use these reports for design
engineering cost impact analysis, supply chain
cost reduction and negotiating, and product
information management input with reliable
and dependable data.

AUTONOMOUS DRILLING
Autonomy is a critical element for planetary
exploration equipment. Machinery must be
able to function with little or no operator
interference in many situations, particularly
on unmanned missions. NORCAT has been
working closely with Xiphos in development
of their Q-cards, small controllers that have
many applications and are of interest to

WHO WE ARE
Export Development Canada is Canadas
export credit agency. EDC offers innovative
commercial solutions to help Canadian
exporters and investors expand their
international business. EDCs knowledge
and partnerships are used by more than
8,300 Canadian companies and their global
customers in up to 200 markets worldwide
each year.
Our support to the sector has continued to
grow over the past 20 years. In 2012, EDCs
support to the Canadian aerospace sector was
approximately $5 billion. At the end of 2012,
aerospace loan assets in EDCs loan portfolio
exceeded $9 billion.
EDC SUPPORT FOR THE AEROSPACESECTOR
The support that EDC provides to the sector
includes the following:
Financing:
On average, EDC facilitates between $2.5and
$3.5 billion in aerospace financing on a yearly
basis. The main use of EDC financing is to
foreign purchasers to support export sales of
aircraft, engines, simulators andparts.
Alternative Financing Solutions:
In addition to direct financing, EDC also
provides a number of alternative financing
solutions to help Canadas aerospace
exporters compete internationally, including
guarantees, lines of credit, equipment
financing and note purchase facilities.
Accounts Receivables Insurance:
EDC also provides a significant amount of
support to the aerospace sector through
its Accounts Receivables Insurance
(ARI) program. ARI insures a companys
receivables, providing certainty that the
money owed to them by their customers
will be converted into cash by their due
date. Given that receivables are often a
considerable asset on a companys balance
sheet, EDCs ARI makes it easier for a financial
institution to lend against thatasset.
Bonding:
More and more buyers are asking for bonds
to ensure suppliers can meet their obligations.
EDC offers a suite of products that can work
