"And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts."Mar. 5:17.

And was this Jesus whom they desired to depart? Yes: and what had the
Redeemer done to merit this treatment? He had dispossessed the evi spirit from
the mind of a poor creature! and caused the whoe country to be freed from the
fury of one whom no chains coud bind: was this the cause? Yes. And is it possibe
that so divine an act coud have had such an e"ect upon the minds of a whoe
body of peope? #hat! woud these $adarenes rather have the devi ranging
among them! in the person of this poor creature! than the %on of $od in the
&indness of our nature? 'ause! my sou: is it not the same now? (o not men sti
prefer the raging uncontroed usts of their own hearts! the dominion of %atan!
and the customs! pursuits! and foies! of the word) to the grace! mercy! and

mind. %urey! +ord! thou hast wrought this bessed change upon me, -oud *
desire thee to depart out of our coasts? .ay! is it not the daiy! houry desire of
my heart! that thou woudest be with me! dwe in me! reign and rue in me! and
be my portion! my $od! my %aviour! and ma&e me thine for ever? %weet

"And they caed the name of that pace 4ochim."Jdg. 2:5.
%urey it was enough to induce such an e"ect! when the preaching of an
ange informed the peope! that the +ord! for their sins! woud not drive out their
enemies before them. /he pace might we be caed 4ochim! and they
themseves might hear the name 4ochim! weepers. 4ut! my sou! thou hast atey
been to a pace which is yet more cacuated to ma&e it memorabe! by weeping!
when thou didst attend Jesus at the ordinance of his supper. 5or there Jesus
himsef was! and is! the everasting preacher! who sheweth thee his hands and

spea& to thee himsef! in his own words! "/hey sha oo& upon me whom they
have pierced: and they sha mourn for him! as one mourneth for his ony son!
and sha be in bitterness for him! as one that is in bitterness for his 6rst2born?"
Zec. 12:10. (idst thou not weep in behoding such a sight! in hearing such words!
and in meditating on such things? Aas, +ord! my heart is harder than the
adamant. 4ut if the eye wept not) say! was not my heart bro&en? (id * not desire
to fee! to mourn! and! with the prophet! to cry out: "0h, that mine head were

the recoection of my Redeemer7s su"erings! and my sins! the dreadfu cause of
them? (id Jesus die for me, (id the %on of $od o"er up his precious sou and
o"ering for me? #as his body bro&en! and his bood shed for me? 5or me, a poor!
wretched! pouted! he2deserving sinner? 0h, for grace to ma&e every pace a

made 8esh. Here woud * go! to gather a hoy hatred to my sins! which brought
Jesus to the cross. Here woud * be found waiting! that when any new temptation
may arise! * may cry out! with a vehement indignation! "How can * do this great
wic&edness! and sin against $od?" How can * "crucify the %on of $od afresh! and
put him to an open shame?" 'recious +ord Jesus, do thou hep me to &eep the
