Global Warming

Global warming is the continuing rise in

global average temperature: specifically
the temperature of the atmosphere and
oceans. But beware - that does not mean
that all places will be warmer!
The increase in global temperature cause
changes in weather patterns; why some
locations may experience drought while
others are flooded cold places become
warmer and in some cases the hot
areas get colder. !ence the term "climate
change" is also used to tal# about global
warming; Both terms refer to the same
phenomenon.
Causes: Is it our fault?
$t is true that there are natural cycles of
cooling and global warming and the
planet has gone through several of these
cycles throughout its existence. !owever
this time the natural cycle of warming has
been exaggerated to a dangerous level
because of our actions - in particular the
production of greenhouse gases
deforestation and urbani%ation.
$f you&ve heard that lac# evidence to
prove that we cause global warming ta#e
the big lie is the truth is that '() of
scientists are absolutely certain that
global warming is a direct result of human
activity *percent reported in +,-, by the
.ational /cademy of 0cience of the
1.0.2.

How much is to be
heated?
/ccording to the $ntergovernmental 3anel
on 4limate 4hange *$3442 the average
global temperature increased by about
-.5 6 7 *,.89 6 42 in the twentieth century
and will increase by 5-8 6 7 *+-: 6 42 over
this century.
;ffects of global warming
7irst patterns of climate change with
more extreme and less predictable rainy
seasons drought winter and summer.
This results in problems for us: storms
and hurricanes become stronger insect-
borne diseases are common may have
unforeseen costly in the agricultural
sector which means higher prices on
basic foods. <f course populations with
less access to resources and
infrastructure suffer more and this
contributes to the social and political
instability.
These climate changes also ma#e life
more difficult *or impossible in some
cases2 for the other species reducing
biodiversity and the ability of ecosystems
to survive. $n addition the melting of the
ice sheets causes sea level rise
threatening islands and coastal areas.
=any places suffer twice threatened
affection of hurricanes and rising sea
level. >espite the development of new
technologies it is predicted that the
consumption of petroleum products will
continue to increase in the future further
worsening the problem of global
warming.
What can I do??
$t is important to recogni%e that your
lifestyle contributes directly to global
warming and that the decisions we ma#e
every day are extremely important. 0ome
actions you can ta#e are:?educe your
carbon footprint: 0imply put that means
reducing your energy use. The =inistry of
;nvironmental 3rotection of the ;1 *;3/2
suggests practicing the three
"?&s" green and use energy saving light
bulbs appliances with the ;nergy 0tar
certification and public transport. @ou can
also go to a calculator carbon footprint for
more specific information about your
personal contribution
