Spiritual JOY PART 1

Date: 22-07-14
It all seems like a dream to me now. Never did I imagine life would be so colourful. Joy, bliss is
souls inherent or true nature. This state should not affected by external circumstances.
Practising non-attachment and non-violence helped me. Since, I had total 3 episodes of Bipolar
Disorder; my mother was worried that I may be going through mania episode. Little did she
know about my inner Joy. There are no words for it. Expressing the Joy is like explaining
colour to a blind person.
I am not a highly spiritual or orthodox person; for instance I rarely go to the church. But my
soul was crying out to me, to listen to the whisper of the Spirit. I found the Holy Bhagavad Gita
to be an amazing book.
But the individual who truly loves the soul and is fully satisfied with the soul and finds utter
contentment in the soul alone, for him no duty exists. - Gita Ch 3, v17

Such a person has no purpose of gain in this world by performing actions, nor does he lose
anything by their non-performance. He is not dependent on anyone for anything - Gita Ch 3, v18

A person who approaches his work as the work given to him by the Spirit and whose
contentment lies solely in the soul, will find that he is ever new Joy, Happiness and Bliss. This
aspect of Yoga called Karma Yoga will benefit the working class a lot. I myself come from an IT
background, which demands us to work hard. Taking 5-10 minute break in an hour to
remember the name of the Lord, who is the ultimate source of energy, will help the devotee a
lot.
I have been practising awareness and mindfulness meditation for little over a year. It is very
simple to practice mindfulness meditation. We are trying to attain a peaceful and calm mind
using mindfulness meditation. We should develop the practice of being fully aware of ones
thoughts. How does it help? Well, you become the master. You decide how to respond to a
situation.
It made me realize that:
1. We are not this mind or body.
2. All the thoughts which are generated are not my own thoughts. Most of them are useless
thoughts, which I have attracted towards myself.
3. Our body acts as a sensor, which senses an entity as good or bad. This may be due to the
inherent survival instinct of man. For instance, I developed a dislike for fried food and
non-vegetarian food as the day I gained Self realization approached nearer.
4. The planets seem to have an influence on sleep patterns.
In the case of an ignorant person, there are multiple things, which control his/her behaviour.
He seems to have no control over his life. Having realized this, I felt the need to calm my mind,
as mentioned by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. Calming my mind involved removing old
conditionings, challenging assumptions and sitting in prayer/meditation. This led to many
learnings, some of which I have written here.
Prakriti is composed of three Gunas Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. An ignorant person identifies
himself with the three Gunas. In order to realize the Ultimate Truth, I felt the need to go beyond
the three Gunas. Another thing which made me take the plunge was to understand the purpose
of Life? Are we meant to just sleep, eat, work and procreate? If we sit back and observe the three
Gunas which are the attributes of Prakriti, we may feel that we are a part of it but we are not the
gunas. If we take one lifetime to understand one combination of gunas, then we will take an
Eternity to understand all the gunas . Modern science is trying to analyze all the gunas. This may
be a cause of concern. Our sole purpose in life should be God contact or God realization. It is
called the Purusha aspect, who is the Ultimate Witness and we are created in His image. If this
realisation comes, everything else will fall in place with least/no effort. Anyone who has stilled
his chitta, can perceive the reflection of the Spirit within himself. Thus as Jesus mentioned I
and the Father are one [John 10:30], would be his state of being.
