The Transfiguration of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ is one of the
Great Feasts of the Orthodox Christian Church, which is celebrated on
6/19 August.
Our Lord Jesus had gone with three of His closest Apostles St Peter, St
James and St John to Mount Tabor, where our Saviours appearance
was Transfigured while they watched.
The two ancient Holy Prophets of God, St Moses and St Elijah,
(representing the Old Covenant Prophecies and the Law) were
clearly seen conversing with Christ, whose Face and garments had
become blindingly radiant with His Divine Glory, which amazed and
terrified the three Apostles who witnessed the scene.
His radiant splendour revealed to humanity the Glorious Divinity of our
Lord Jesus Christ, which would later enable His Apostles to fully
understand after His Ascension that He is truly the Eternal, Only
Begotten Son of God and that His Passion was voluntary and His
Resurrection demonstrated the reality of our own Resurrection and
the possibility of our Theosis our Spiritual Perfection.
The Transfiguration was vehemently debated between St Gregory
Palamas and Barlaam of Calabria.
Barlaam believed that the Divine Light that radiated from Christ was
created light, while St Gregory maintained that the Apostles had
been granted Divine Grace to perceive the Glorious, Uncreated Light
of God which supported St Gregorys larger argument that although,
as human beings, we cannot know God in His Divine Essence, we can
know Him in His Divine Energies, as He reveals Himself.
Accounts of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ are recorded in
the Holy Gospel of St Matthew 17:1-8; St Mark 9:2-9 and St Luke 9:28-36
as well as in the Second Epistle of St Peter 1: 16-19.
The Transfiguration took place at the time of the Jewish Festival of
Booths, and the celebration of the Transfiguration became the New
Covenant fulfilment of the Old Covenant Feast.
We now celebate the Transfiguration on 6 August, which is forty days
before the Great Feast of the Exaltation or Elevation of the Holy Cross
14 September.
Just as St Peter, St James and St John witnessed the Transfiguration of
Christ before His crucifixion so that they might know Who Christ truly is
and Who suffered for our sake, His Holy Church connects these two
Great Feasts to help all Faithful Christians understand the Divine
Mission of our Lord and know that His Suffering was voluntary for the
Love of all mankind throughout all ages.
The Feast of Transfiguration initially belonged to the Season of Great
Lent, but may have been considered too joyous for that time.
St Gregory Palamas, a great Teacher of the Transfiguration, is now
clebrated on the Second Sunday of Great Lent.

And when the Disciples heard It, they
fell on their faces and were greatly

And Jesus went and touched them and
said: Arise, and do not be afraid.
When they had lifted up their eyes,
they saw no one but Jesus only.
And, as they went down from the

saying: Tell the Vision to no one

Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in
this tent, just as our Lord Jesus
Christ showed me.
Furthermore I will be careful to ensure
that you always have a reminder of
these things after my decease.
For we did not follow cunningly devised
fables when we made known to you
the Power and Coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses
of His Majesty.
For He received from God the Father
Honour and Glory when such a Voice
came to Him from the Excellent
Glory: This is My Beloved Son, in
Whom I Am well pleased.
And we heard this Voice, which came
from Heaven, when we were with
Him on the Holy Mountain.
And so we have the Prophetic Word
confirmed, which you do well to
heed as a Light that shines in a dark
place, until the Day dawns and the
Morning Star rises in your hearts...

At that time, Jesus took Peter, James

up a high mountain by themselves.
And He was Transfigured before them:
His Face shone like the sun, and His

And behold! Moses and Elijah
appeared to them, talking with Him.
Then Peter said to Jesus: Lord, it is
good for us to be here; if Thou wish,
let us make here three tabernacles:

While he was still speaking, behold! A

There is no soundness in my Flesh

Peace in my Bones because of my

For mine iniquities have gone over my

too heavy for me.
My wounds are foul and festering
because of My foolishness.
I am troubled, I am bowed down
greatly; that I go mourning all the
day long.
For my loins are full of inflammation,
and there is no soundness in my
flesh.
I am feeble and severely broken; I
groan because of the turmoil of My
heart.
Lord, all my desire is before Thee and
My sighing is not hidden from Thee.
My heart pants, my strength fails me;
as for the light of mine eyes, it also
has gone from me.
My loved ones and my friends stand
aloof from my plague, and my
relatives stand afar off.
Those also who seek my life lay snares
for me.
Those who seek my hurt speak of
destruction and plan deception all
the day long.
But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; and
I am like a mute who does not open
his mouth.
Thus I am like a man who does not
hear and in whose mouth are no
reproofs.
For in Thee, O Lord, I hope; Thou wilt
hear, O Lord my God.

For with Thee is the Fountain of Life; in
Thy Light we shall see Light.
Extend Thy Mercy unto them who know
