CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
According to Losare (2007) study habits simply mean how a student manages his/her
time in such a way that he/she can review and study his/her lesson in school regularly. It
becomes a habit or a way of life. A student who develops his/her study habits cannot sleep or go
to school without studying his/her lesson.
As a general rule, a student should study his/her lesson before going to sleep or go to
school prepared by studying his lessons. A student can be more intelligent and have self-
confidence in class compared to those who do not develop their good study habits. A student
who does not have good study habit cannot do well in class recitation, daily quizzes and actual
student demonstration since she/he did not study and review the lesson learned. Without well
developed study habits, a student cannot perform well in class and has less developed self-
confidence. Therefore, he/she may not be able to reach his or her ambition in life.
To develop good study habits, the students should balance and manage their time wisely.
They should keep themselves away from bad traits of this attitude; they could serve as models to
their brothers, sisters and classmates. As a result, they will be motivated to follow their example.
Effective study habits of learners will not be developed in a day, a month, or a year. It is
life-long process and must be reinforced by parents, teachers and the school administrators. Villa
(2009)

Statement of the Problem
This study will be conducted to find out the study habits of BEEd first year
students, section A, B and C of College of Teacher Education enrolled in the school year 2013-
2014.
It aims to answer the following questions:
1. What are the study habits of the students?
2. What are the most common study habits of the students?
3. What are the least common study habits of the students?

Significance of the Study
The result will be beneficial to the following:

Teachers, this might inspire them to develop strategies of teaching that could motivate
the students to appreciate and understand more the subject matter and to be able to guide them
properly towards good and effective study habits;
Students, it would be the benchmark for them to know what are the effective study
habits and to realize that good study habits will eventually improve their academic performance.
Parents, for them to help, encourage, and guide their child to exert more effort in
studying and to give them moral support by providing necessary time, materials and facilities for
comfortable reviewing and studying at home.
Future Researchers, serves as a basis or reference that could be related to their future
studies.

Scope and Delimitation
The study will be conducted to find out the study habits of Bachelor of Elementary
Education, first year students enrolled during the school year 2013-2014.
In determining the most common study habits of the respondents, the first 3 ranks are
considered and the bottom 3 will be the least study habits.
Rationale
We chose the first year students of Bachelor of Elementary Education sections A,B and C
as our respondents because they are the third batch of the upcoming battery examination and we
want to know what are the preparations that their making particularly to their study habits.

Definition of Terms
Habit- is an acquired act that is routinely and automatically performed by an individual

Study Habits- it pertains to where, when and how students study effectively.

Most Common Study Habits- the top three in the ranking of fifteen listed study
habits.

Least Common Study Habits- the bottom three in the listed study habits.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
These pieces of literature were selected because of their similarity and relevance to the
present study.
Villa (2009) Effective study habits of learners will not be developed in a day, a month, or a
year. It is life-long process and must be reinforced by parents, teachers and the school
administrators.
Marquez (2007) stated some ways of encouragement for good study habits:
1. Learn to smile.
2. Learn to comfort.
3. Be friendly.
4. Cite words of encouragement.
5. Generate collaborations.
6. Get to know your teaching style.
7. Develop effective strategies.
8. Learn to accept opinions.
9. Create visual materials.
10. Show appreciations.
Franco (2007) cited pointers which student should put into practice for effective studying:
Take up the challenge
Set up a goal
Set your priorities
Develop a routine
Be systematic
Be responsible
Keep balance
Losare (2007) study habits simply mean how a pupil manages his/her time in such a way
that he/she can review and study his/her lesson in school regularly. It becomes a habit or a way
of life. A pupil who develops his/her study habits cannot sleep or go to school without studying
his/her lesson. A child can be intelligent and have self confidence in class compared those who
do not develop their study habits.
Aquino (2007) believes that there are three outstanding factors responsible for the
students failure to acquire from study habits namely: lack of parents supervision; unwise use of
leisure and lack of needed material of studying.
Balacanao(March 2005). Pointed at the lies in the quality of study habits, interest and
performance concerning academic subject is of great importance towards the acquisition of a
deeper knowledge and understanding .
Attitude towards study habits affect academic achievements. Felipe (1998) suggested that
learning should start with attitude in elementary level. The day to day activities in elementary
slowly impart knowledge but must surely lead him to form an attitude to good study habits after
he acquires the right attitudes, the pupils goes on further for a higher level of education,
studying and strengthening that positive attitude and which he acquired in his early life and
experience.
Herrera (1998) noticed that one of the major causes of the drop in the quality of education
is the poor and ineffective study habit employed by the students. Most of them now do not know
and do not follow the basic rules of effective study habits. Majority of the students do not
possess the right study habits which could be the stair way successful achievements of their goals
in life.
According to Clark and Miller (1997) academic success requires an intensive success of
attitudes towards learning and the acquisition of technique of acquiring achievement skills.
Those skills need to be acquired, they do not come automatically.

Kelly states (1997) not so much one knows but rather his attitude towards himself and
others is the main spring of behavior. It that a child who is mentally superior becomes an
achiever because of his attitude. Favorable attitudes towards the school and learning task
facilitate the pupils attainment of worthwhile goals.
According to Mangubat (1995) wrote that conferences with parents could be very
effective measure in having pupils from getting failing grades or low academic achievement.
They are very important in affecting change in the habits. In some ways, these conferences may
show the parents that the teacher is the interested in the welfare of their children.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The descriptive survey method will be used in collecting the data of this study to
determine the general study habits of the respondents.
Sources of Data
The respondents of this study will be students of Bachelor of Elementary Education I-A,
I-B, I-C of College of Teacher Education, Cabagan-Campus, School Year 2013-2014.
Data Gathering Instrument
A fifteen (15) item Study Habits Questionnaire will be used to determine the study habits
of the students. Some of the questions in the Study Habits Questionnaire will be patterned from
the questionnaire checklist formulated by Balacanao, et, al (March 2001) in their action research
entitled Study Habits and Academic Performance of First Year High School Students of Delfin
Albano High School.
Data Gathering Procedure
The 30 students (10 students for every section)from first year A, B and C OF BEEd will
be requested to give their honest responses by checking one from the 1,2,3,4,5 rating scale on the
fifteen (15) item. Study Habits Questionnaire which will be personally administered by the
researchers.
Method of Analysis
To determine the study habit of the respondents, frequency counts, and weighted mean
rating will be used. In determining the most common study habits of the respondents, the first 3
ranks are considered and the bottom 3 will be the least study habits.
