I. Reading comprehension (8 points)
Laura was a new 10
th
grade student at Millport High School. Laura quickly
became friends with her next door neighbor and cassmate! "essica. #hey li$ed
in the same neighborhood and had all of the same classes. %ecause they
looked similar! they shared e$erything & they e$en had the same type of cell
phone. ln the afternoons! they would play! study! and work on their homework
together. 's their friendship grew! their studying decreased and they began to
talk during cass.
%ecause of their incessant talking! they had to be separated during (nglish
classes. #his was a perfect classroom situation until one day they took a test.
)hen the tests were graded! the teacher noticed a similarity between Laura and
"essica*s answers. +n all the correct answers they had the exact same
explanation! and they missed all of the same questions. #he teacher confronted
Laura and "essica about this phenomenon. #hey caimed that there was no way
for them to cheat because they were sitting on opposite sides of the room.
#he teacher belie$ed them but decided to carefully monitor the class during
each exam. ,or the first exam! she did not notice anything out of the ordinary &
howe$er! Laura and "essica*s tests were exactly the same. +n the next test! the
teacher kept her eyes on Laura and "essica. She noticed that both girls kept one
hand on the desk and one hand in their lap. )alking quietly! she came up to
Laura and disco$ered that she was using her cell phone. "essica was using her
cell phone as wel. She immediately confiscated both cell phones and ga$e both
girls a -ero on the exam.
#he teacher began to further in$estigate the use of the cell phones. She
disco$ered that Laura and "essica were sending the test answers through text
messaging. #his practice of sending answers through text messaging has
become $ery common among teenagers. .o sounds can be heard and
teenagers can type without looking at the phone. #he next day Laura also
admitted to taking a picture of some of her test answers and sending it to
"essica.
