Since the early 1990's, Chicago's murder rates have been steadily decreasing due to strict gun laws and more police on the street. However, since the year od 2004, the murder rates of men have been steady; Ranging on average around 400 per year. Proposers of gun control think it has something to do with it. These believers feel that those living in the city of Chicago need guns to protect themselves from criminals. Residents throughout Chicago may be more "feared" by criminals-knowing the residents can protect themselves and not be known as "sitting ducks." Further research can rebute the sitting duck belief. When viewing "Murder by Motive Data," street gang activity proves to be the highest reason for homicide-3365 in total. Street gang activity surpasses the three other motives (narcotics, robbery, and domestic altercation) when totaled together at 3301. After viewing the data and charts, the decrease in murders in Chicago prove have steadied since 2004 when looking at "Victimes by Sex Chart." When viewing the "Motive" chart, without taking consideration with street gang activity, in 2008, the same can be said when activity being steady. In 2008, two groups who claim to have in impact on street gang violence lost funding. Souces believe groups such a CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) and CeaseFire lost some government funding and take a different approach on reducing gang violence by reaching out the them while offering support. When the groups had support, the number of gang related murders have not risen as high at 2008's loss (185)
