The Germantown Village Board last week approved a request
from the Fire Department to purchase a new engine and rescue
vehicle at a cost of $770,061.
During the July 21 Village Board meeting, Fire Chief Gary
Weiss said the village sought bids from four fire equipment com-
panies, but only one Pierce Manufacturing returned a pro-
posal.
Weiss said the bid provided by Pierce was analyzed by a staff
committee, which made approximately $29,000 worth of reduc-
tions. Staff then added an additional $1,000 to provide an air
dryer for Fire Station #1, making the total cost $771,061. The
equipment will be funded through the villages capital budget.
Weiss explained that the staff committee combined a heavy
rescue vehicle and an fire engine into one vehicle request.
The advantage to this is that we should not need to buy
another fire engine for another 20 years, Weiss said.
He said that because the village combined the heavy rescue
and the engine truck into one item, the village save $565,000
compared with buying each item separately.
Weiss said the new vehicle is more than a fire truck and will
be able to deal with situations such as a building collapse.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael Maury said the new vehicle will
assist the department responding to disaster situations and will
replace a van the agency owns. He said the new vehicle would
be perfect if the department had to respond to a situation simi-
lar to the train derailment that occurred in Slinger the previous
day.
Village President Dean Wolter said he appreciated the time
and effort by staff, as well as the forward thinking of looking at
how separate truck proposals could be combined into one vehicle

Disorderly conduct
A customer at Walmart, W190 N9855
Appleton Avenue, was warned for disorderly
behavior at 1:41 p.m. July 13 after pushing an
employee at the front service desk.
A male subject was taken into custody
for disorderly conduct-domestic violence at
10:29 a.m. July 14 after threatening to kill his
girlfriend during an altercation in the N11000
block of Pilgrim Road.
Absolute sobriety
A male driver was cited for violation of
absolute sobriety at 2:49 a.m. July 15 follow-
ing a traffic stop at Windsong Circle and
Windsong Road.
Littering
A male subject was cited for littering at
7:53 p.m. July 13 after throwing a
McDonald's cup out of his car window near
Country Aire Drive and Pioneer Road.
Operating while intoxicated
A male subject was arrested for operat-
ing while intoxicated-second offense and
operating after revocation at 12:47 a.m. July
15 following a traffic stop at N. Highway 41
North and Holy Hill Road.

The Washington County Fair has resumed
ticket sales for the show, which begins at
5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The VIP area of the
show will open to ticket holders at 3:30 p.m.
VIP tickets are available at $25.00 each.
Guests with General Admission tickets for
Saturday can view the show from the natural
amphitheater.
ZZ Top Reserved VIP and General VIP
ticket holders can use their tickets for this
show. Additionally, each ZZ Top Reserved

the show with their current ticket will receive

Perfect Wedding
Brides have been carrying bouquets for hun-
dreds of years. In ancient times, bridal bouquets
generally consisted of garlic, herbs and spices to
keep evil spirits away. By Victorian times, fresh flow-
ers had replaced the garlic, herbs and spices, and
many of these flowers carried special meanings,
like innocence, faith and love. Floriography, the
language of flowers, continues to this day, with
some brides researching flower meanings and bas-
ing their bouquet selections on those meanings.
Floriography isnt the only trend in bridal bouquets.
There are many others. Here is a brief review.
Bridal bouquets are traditionally pale in color,
but todays brides are branching out and choosing
bolder colors, like burgundy, red and purple.
Bouquet color schemes can be monochromaticall
shades of purple, for exampleor complementary.
With bouquets getting brighter, they have become
a real feature in wedding photography, in particu-
lar black and white photography with selective col-
oring.
Roses remain a bridal bouquet standard, but
other flowers are starting to make their way into the
mix. Daisies, hydrangeas, lilies, peonies and tulips
are popular choices, as are orchids. Many brides,
in fact, are asking for more tropical flowers in their
bouquets, either because of their theme or for a
unique twist.
While cascades of flowers were once the norm
in bridal bouquets, many brides today are opting
to take a simpler route. Hand-tied bouquets are a
popular choice. With the flowers gathered togeth-
er and wrapped in ribbon, the bouquets are easier
to handle and have a contemporary look to them.
While todays bridal bouquets might be some-
what simpler in design, brides can still add some
dazzle to them with beads, crystals, feathers,
pearls, sequins and other accessories. Brides with
themed weddings can take it a step further and
incorporate extra special touches into their bou-
quets, like miniature seashells, pinecones or butter-
flies. Bouquets featuring vintage brooches are also
becoming popular.
Bridal bouquets can run the gamut from the tra-
ditional all-white hand-tied rose bouquet drenched
in crystals to the sassy gold, red and purple bou-
quet cuffed by feathers. It is up to the bride how she
wants her bouquet to be. Brides should check out
some samples, talk to their florist and select a bou-
quet design that speaks to them.

Menomonee Falls started strong against
Homestead in a sectional semifinal at
Whitefish Bay July 21, but the Highlanders
kept coming back.
"They hit the ball and they executed and
played defense," Menomonee Falls Coach
Pat Hansen said of Homestead.
Menomonee Falls jumped out to a 4-0
lead in the first inning lead as Tommy Wolf
and Lukas Kell each drove in two runs with
two outs. But Homestead got on the board
with a run in the second inning. Menomonee
Falls made the score 5-1 in the top of the third
inning as a double by Kell drove in Boyd
Sansone from second base.
Homestead cut into the Falls lead in the
bottom of the inning. A double by Eric Wade
was followed by a single by Ian Koch. Mitch
Sutton was then hit by a pitch to load the
bases. All three runners scored to make the
score 5-4 for Menomonee Falls. The
Highlanders tied the score with a run in the
next inning.
Menomonee Falls answered with three
runs in the top of the fifth inning. But
Homestead loaded the bases in the bottom of
the inning, which were cleared by a grand
slam by Jared Stieve. The Highlanders added
an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth
inning while holding Menomonee Falls score-
less the rest of the way.
Afterward, Hansen noted that starting
pitcher Ty Weber was battling an ear infec-
tion.
"I'm proud of the way kids battled and I'm
proud of the way them all season long the
way they played," Hansen said.
Hansen noted the team won 15 of its last
20 games.
"The did a great job of coming on as the
season went. We started four sophomores
and they certainly grew as the season wore
on," he said.
Hamilton was within one win of making
the state tournament for summer baseball.
The Chargers lost to Brookfield Central 4-
0 in the sectional final at Waukesha West July
21. Earlier in the day, the Chargers upset
Waukesha Catholic Memorial 5-3 in the sec-
tional semifinal.
Hamilton advanced to the sectional with a
5-3 win over Milwaukee Marquette in the
regional final on July 18.
Germantown's season ended with a 5-2
loss to North Shore Conference rival
Homestead in the July 18 regional final.
Germantown ended the season with a 13-17
record.
