2014 MID-YEAR REPORT

MID-YEAR
REPORT
Magda Rosario Martes is a woman whose
strength is sustained by the kind of assuredness
in Gods provision that one cant help but envy.
When she stands before a crowd, she is
confident and prophetic. She speaks reminders
of Gods goodness, and has her students
practice sharing their testimonies of Gods
hand in their lives. Magdas story exemplifies
the beautiful work that God is accomplishing
through Edify.
Magda started Mis Primeras Palabras (My
First Words) School in 2006 with her firm
foundation in Philippians 4:13 I can do all things
in him that strengthens me which remains her
slogan. The history of Mis Primeras Palabras is a
testament to Gods faithfulness and Magdas
determination. I want my school to grow,
Magda shares. I made a deal with God that if
He allowed me to get some kind of financing to
make basic improvements to the school
desks, chairs and educational materialsI
would scholarship five children from the most
difficult backgrounds. When she received
financingin the form of an Edify loanMagda
made good on her promise. Despite her
meager worldly possessions and her own
personal challenges, She stands before one of
the students who she personally scholarships,
a small girl with small, tight braids and engulfs
the child in her umbrella-love. They send these
students to us and we love them. This little one lost both of her parents tragically. Here, we hold
her and love her.
Magdas students come predominately from her church, only a block from her school. She
works with the church and the teachers to ascertain that the students are being primarily raised
up in the love of God while at the same time starting their formal education in a proper environment.
The students start the day with hymns and praise but continue to sing spontaneously
throughout the day. The students come from families with little ability to pay the US $6 a
month school fee but that choose to value education with the few resources they have. The
school has an active parents association who meet regularly to keep the school
accountable, to make suggestions, and to be generally involved. The parents recently
brought old toys and recyclables, which the students magically turn into dioramas to
demonstrate the content they are learning in class! Magda only educates students up to 6th
grade but her former students are always around. It seems that there is some irresistible pull
back to the school. Former students substitute for teachers when they are sick and come
back for special school performances and activities.
Magdas school had similar beginnings to many small, private schools in the Dominican
Republic. She started with 5 students in her home. By the end of her first year, she had 25
students. The student population grew as word spread, and soon the population overwhelmed
the space. To accommodate so many students, Magda moved with her developmentally
disabled daughter to a humble wooden structure in the back of her home, and turned her nicer
cement home into the school. When asked why she would swap houses with the school to live in
inferior conditions, Magda answers, Its really quite simple. I just ask myself, What would Jesus
do? And then I do that. When asked how she can sacrifice so much for other peoples children
when her own daughters health issues require regular visits to 5 different doctors, she smiles
peacefully. If God sent me my daughter in the special manner that she is, then that means He
knew how much it would cost to take good care of her. That means He knows how He will
provide for that care. I dont always know where the money will come from but I trust Him.
Magdas school, which certainly sits on hallowed ground, is a testament to what happens
when imperfect humans choose to let Gods light shine through their lives and sacrifice their
comfort for the glory of His kingdom.
