MID-TERM TEST-I

IIYEAR - III SEMESTER

ME -ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS
SECTION - B
Time: 1.30 hours Answer all questions Maximum: 50Marks

Part A (5X2=10marks)
1. What is thermodynamic system?
2. What is point function and path function?
3. What is meant by thermodynamic equilibrium?
4. State zeroth law of thermodynamics?
5. State the first law of thermodynamics for a non flow process and for a cycle?

Part B

6. (i)Drive the expression for Iso-thermal process (8)
(OR)
(ii) Derive the steady flow energy equation, stating the the assumptions made. (8)

7. (i) A gas of mass 1.5kg undergoes a quasi-static expansion which follows a relationship
p=a+bv .where a and b are constants.the initial and final pressures are 100kpa and 200kpa
respectively and the corresponding volumes are 0.2m
3
and 1.2m
3
.The specific internal energy of the
gas is given by the relation U=1.5PV 85 KJ/kg.Where p is in kpa and v is in m
3
.calculate the net
heat transfer and the maximum internal energy of the gas attained during expansions. (16)
(OR)
(ii) A fluid system, contained in a piston and cylinder machine, passes through a complete
cycle of four process. The sum of all heat transferred during a cycle is -340Kj.The system completes
200 cycles per min.

Process Q (Kj/min) W (Kj/min) (Kj/min)
a-b 0 4340 -
b-c 42000 0 -
c-d 4200 - 73200
d-a - - -
Complete the above table showing the method for each item, and compute the net rate of work output
in KW.

8. (a) A mass of air is initially at 260
0
C and 700kpa and occupies 0.028m
3
.The air is expanded
at constant pressure to 0.084m
3
.A polytropic process with n=1.5 is then carried out, followed by a
constant temprature process. All the process are reversible.
(i)Sketch the cycle in p-V and T-s planes

(ii)

Find the heat received and heat rejected in the cycle
(iii)

Find the efficiency of the cycle. (16)
(OR)

(b) Air at a temprature of 15
0
Cpasses through a heat exchanger at a velocity of 30m/s where its
temprature is raised to 800
0
C.It then enters a turbine with the same velocity of 30m/s and expands
untill the temprature falls to 650
0
C.On leaving the turbine ,the air is taken at a velocity of 60m/s to a
nozzle where it expands untill the temprature has fallen to 500
0
C.If the air flow is 2kg/s,calculate

(i) the rate of heat exchanger to the air in the heat exchanger,
(ii The power output from the turbine assuming no heat loss, and
(iii)

The velocity at exit from the nozzle, assuming no heat loss.Take the enthalpy of air as
h=Cp T,where Cp is the specific heat equals to 1.005Kj/kgK and T the temprature.
