Electronic Transmission Automotive Control (ETAC)
systems provide many cost and operating benefits.
Applications can include lift trucks, telehandlers,
railway maintenance equipment, utility vehicles, and
compact wheel loaders. Within the ETAC system, the
electronic controller is integrated with the engine
throttle management system, as well as a closed
circuit pump. It drives high performance proportional
valves and uses electronic swashplate feedback to
provide precise, dynamic system control.
Automotive control of a hydrostatic drive allows
large vehicles to be operated in a way similar to a
standard automobile with an automatic transmission.
A single throttle pedal controls the engine and
transmission, giving output speed and torque as
needed for vehicle operating systems.
EATON ETAC Control: Electronic Transmission Automotive Control Users Manual E-HYOV-TM002-E September 2007 3
Adjustable performance
W ithin the capabilities of the
engine, vehicle responsiveness
(aggressive vs. sm ooth) can be
adjusted relative to changes in
engine speed. The settings
affect both acceleration and
deceleration m odes of
operation.
Anti-stall
ETAC s scalable anti-stall
sensitivity enables m axim um
engine loading and allow s use
of m axim um available engine
pow er over the full speed
range. The response rate and
load profile is adjustable to
specific engine characteristics.
Operator Interfaces
Specifications and
recom m endations are provided
for all system com ponents,
including the foot pedal,
forw ard/neutral/ reverse
selector sw itch, inching pedal,
and interlock sw itches (parking
brake and operator presence).
Safety
The safety features ensure
pum p displacem ent is
m aintained at m echanical
neutral by interrupting pow er
to the pum p control. O ther
safety interrupts include
parking brake release and
operator presence sw itches.
Hydrostatic braking
ETAC uses full capacity of the
hydrostatic system for slow ing
vehicles, w hich reduces the
dem ands on service brake
system s. H ydrostatic-braking
greatly reduces the need for
frequent brake servicing and
associated vehicle dow ntim e.
It is initiated by sim ply
releasing the throttle pedal.
M ore aggressive braking
action can also be obtained by
depressing the inching pedal.
Inching control
W ith this option, a second
foot pedal allow s the user to
destroke the pum p, allow ing
the engine to m aintain speed
in a loaded condition. Inching
control is useful w hen precise
positional control is required
or w hen engine speed m ust
be increased independent of
travel speed to support other
m achine w ork functions such
as raising a load on a forklift.
Electronic Control Module
The brain of the system is the
M A ESTRO Electronic C ontrol
M odule. This unit can be
configured, by m eans of
softw are, to perform a w ide
range of functions.
Performance
The ETAC system offers m ore
consistent perform ance
com pared to hydrom echanical
(autom otive drive) system s.
Perform ance is not im pacted
by tem perature effects on
oil viscosity because engine
speed is m easured
electronically. The use
of electronic control offers
the capability to m ore
precisely m atch transm ission
perform ance relative to engine
pow er. The ETAC s control
delivers greater m axim um
vehicle perform ance, reduced
fuel consum ption and faster
cycle tim es resulting in
reduced overall vehicle
operating cost.
Hot shifting
This feature allow s the
transm ission to be rapidly
shifted from forw ard to
neutral to reverse (or vice
versa) w ithout dam age to the
vehicle pow ertrain system .
H ot shifting im proves
productivity com pared to
m echanical system s by
sim plifying operation and
reducing operator fatigue.
Temperature stability
The system s electronic
sw ashplate position (ESP)
technology m akes system
control insensitive to
tem perature and/or oil
viscosity. This ensures positive
neutral even under extrem e
cold start conditions w ithout
the com plexities of extra
valves. The control in turn,
provides sm ooth, precise,
reliable, and repeatable
operation w ith predictable
perform ance.
Setup
The operator m ust size the
H ST transm ission, including
pum ps and m otors, w hen
setting up the system design
softw are. From those
calculations, m any details can
be tailored for the needed
system applications, including:
- vehicle param eter settings
- vehicle speed vs.
travel pedal profile
- engine speed vs.
travel pedal profile
- pum p displacem ent vs.
engine speed, and
- engine torque curve.

SA E J1128
A ppropriate w iring
practices should be used
for installation to avoid
abrasion, strain, dam age,
and EM I (electrom agnetic
interference). D o not route
ETAC harness w ires in the
sam e bundle as other
pow er w ires (exam ple,
pow ering m otors and
actuators).
External circuits m ust
not be connected to the
sensor or solenoid w ires.
A ll sensor supply and
ground w ires m ust be
spliced together w ithin
8 inch w ire length of the
M A ESTRO controller. A ll
ground w ires should be
connected to a center
point.
A ll sw itch supply w ires
should be spliced together
w ithin 8 inch w ire length
of the M A ESTRO con-
troller.
Provide sw itched 12 or 24
volts w ith a 6-am p fast
blow fuse. Provide an
em ergency stop sw itch.
As practical, route the
w ires in bundles and
enclose the bundles in

sure to choose tem perature
appropriate m aterial.
This w ill help prevent w ire
failure due to abrasion,
accidental nicking or cutting.
Avoid routing w ires around
sharp corners or rough
edges. U se grom m ets as
appropriate. Avoid m aking
sharp turns w ith the
harness, for this m ay
increase stresses.
Secure the w ire bundles
in channels or use w ire
ties to secure harness
to fram e. Securing the
harness w ill help prevent
w ire fatigue and accidental
dam age from m oving
parts or m aintenance
w ork. Avoid long stretches
of unsupported harness.
A llow the harness to
m ove as the fram e w ill
m ove in the application.
Avoid high tem perature
sources such as exhaust
system s and engine
blocks.
Avoid routing w ires on
sources of high vibration.
W hen possible locate
connectors shielding them
from direct spray. U se
m anufacture connector
boots, if available, to help
prevent high-pressure
spray directly on a
connector w here the
w ires enter. D o not locate
connectors, or w ire slices,
in troughs that can retain
w ater and leave the
connector subm erged in
w ater or other chem icals.
U se w ire routing to
prevent sim ilar connectors
from being m istakenly
connected by adjusting
w ire length so only the
correct connector can be
engaged.

Guidelines
The system integrator
m ust understand the
issues of Electrom agnetic
C om patibility (EM C ) and
verify that the installation
and use of the com plete
system com plies w ith all
governm ental regulations.
A ppropriate industry prac-
tices m ust be follow ed to
prevent dam age of and
shorting of electrical and
electronic com ponents
caused by environm ental
hazards and application
specific hazards. Typical
hazards that dam age the
w iring harnesses or other
com ponents are abrasion,
m oving objects, and heat
from the engine or
exhaust system .
M oisture and/or chem ical
exposure can dam age
poorly sealed connectors
and/or com ponents, caus-
ing short or open circuits
and other problem s like
corrosion.
A ll the electrical connec-
tions to the electronic
m odule m ust be discon-
nected prior to perform ing
any electrical w elding on
the vehicle or m achine.
The electrical m odule,
sensors, and/or the
hydraulic com ponents are
not to be used as a con-
nection point for electrical
w elding equipm ent.
D uring initial start-up
and/or checkout of the
system after service, care
should be taken to avoid
the hazards of inadvertent
operation (m achine activa-
tion, unintended m ove-
m ent, etc.) from im proper
