T plays reflective music to settle Ss as they enter the classroom.
(link found on resource page of website)
Have Ss seated in a semi-circle on the floor, with the T in front of them,
also on the floor.
T explains that Ss are going to hear an important story from the Bible
that they might have heard before and brings out the Godly Play kit.
T tells the story of Pentecost, using the words from The Spirit Comes:
Pentecost Script and using materials to represent the characters and the
story.
(Script available on resources page of website)
T focuses on moving the pieces and telling the story, allowing Ss to
focus on the movements and the words.
T states I wonder questions, pausing to allow Ss time to consider each
one.
I wonder why the Holy Spirit came to the Disciples
I wonder how the Disciples felt when this happened
I wonder if we have the Holy Spirit inside us
I wonder if you can see the Holy Spirit in others
Ss encouraged to respond to the I wonder questions by sharing their
thoughts with the class

Ss return to their desks write a short response to the I wonder
questions, and come up with one question that they have about the story.
As a class, discuss some of the Ss questions.

Assessment:

Informal:
-Observation of Ss responses to the
I wonder questions

T asks Ss What comes to your mind when you think of a gift?
T prompts Ss thoughts with questions
-Who gives you gifts?
-Why are you given gifts?
-Why are gifts special?
Think, pair share - Ss think quietly to themselves, share their thoughts
with a partner, then share their thoughts with the class

Discuss how as the disciples received the holy spirit at Pentecost, we
receive gifts of the holy spirit in Baptism which are strengthened in
Confirmation. They are spiritual gifts that help us to live out Gods word.

T places seven gold gift bags at the front of the room, one for each gift.
Inside each bag is gold paper with an explanation of the gift on it.
T introduces one gift at a time. This is the gift of Wisdom. Then
chooses a student to receive the gift.
Ss who are chosen open the gift bag and pull out the paper.
Ss read the explanation of the gift to the class.

After each gift is revealed T asks Ss to think of a time where they have
used the gift in the past.

In their books, Ss write the name of each gift and draw an image or
symbol that best represents their understanding of what it means to
receive that gift. Ss can add key words related to each gift around their
image.

Reflection:
Discuss as a class why the gifts are an important part of Confirmation

Assessment:

the discussion. Are the examples
of using the gifts correct for the
meaning of the gift?
-Marking of Ss bookwork and
questioning the reasons behind
choice of image

Lesson Evaluation:

-Did the experience using gift bags
enhance student engagement?
-Was the experience too simple for
the age of the students?

40 min

As a class, briefly revise the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, through a
discussion about the meaning of each one. T states that the gifts of the
Holy Spirit help people to live according to Gods teachings and to make
the right choices.
As a class, brainstorm people in the local community or the family of Ss,
who demonstrate the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
T states that some wonderful examples of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in
action can be seen in the lives of the Saints. In pairs, Ss choose a Saint
from a given list to research, using links to information supplied by T.
(Links to information are available on the student page of the website).
Ss take notes on the life of their chosen Saint, with a focus on how they
demonstrate one or two of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
T gives Ss the criteria for their task prior to starting.
After note taking, T demonstrates 3 different ways of graphically
organising the information (examples available on the resource page of
the website). Ss are to organise their information graphically in their
books (draft) then on an A4 piece of paper for display. T must sign off
on Ss draft before they can go on to their final display. T also gives Ss an
image of their chosen Saint to use on their display.
T explains that Ss will have 20 minutes in the next lesson to finalise their
display product, before sharing it with the class. Ss should aim to have
completed their draft by the end of this lesson.
Assessment:

Informal
-Check Ss notes and draft graphic
display for accuracy of
information and whether they are
on track for the final display task.
Criteria:
-Must include:
-Details of the life of the Saint,
including, birth date (if known),
key life events, death)

the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 or

their understanding of how the
gifts help individuals to live out
the Gospel values?
-Is there enough time over the two
lessons for Ss to complete the
task sufficiently?
-Is the task engaging?
-Does the task allow for student
creativity?

Discuss any problems/queries from the previous lesson.
Pairs are given 20 minutes to finalise their product for display.
T roams the classroom assisting Ss with the displays and ensuring that
they understand the criteria.

One pair at a time, Ss present their Saint Profile to the class. Ss show
their final display product and explain briefly how their Saint
demonstrates the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Ss are able to ask questions about the Saint being discussed.

30 min

Discuss as a class how the gifts of the Holy Spirit, received at Baptism
and strengthened through Confirmation, are used every day and help us
to make the right choices.
Ss choose 3 or 4 of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and write down how they
have recently used each one in a positive way. Several Ss share their
responses.
T creates 7 large tongues of flame using orange and red
paper/cardboard and labels each one with one of the gifts of the Holy
Spirit. Have these on display in the classroom.
Ss are each given a smaller tongue of flame. Ss choose one of the gifts
that is the most important to them and write it on the back of their flame.
On the front, Ss write a sentence about how they will specifically use
that gift to become a better person and make positive choices.
Sentences must be written in the structure of With the gift of ______, I
will ..
Prior to writing, T gives an example of how they personally would use
each one, to give Ss some ideas.
Reflection:
T plays reflective prayer music. (link available on resource page of
website)
One by one, Ss share their response with the class before placing their
flame on display next to the larger flame of their chosen gift.
As a class, recite the prayer for the seven gifts. (Available on resource
page of website).
Assessment:

Formal
-Mark Ss bookwork. Does the
example of using the gifts reflect
the intended meaning of the gift?
-Assess flame task. Determine if the
action specified matches the
meaning of the gift and if Ss can
adequately describe how the gifts
can be used to live out the
Gospel values.

Lesson Evaluation:

-Does the task allow Ss to consider
how the gifts help them respond
to Gods call?
-Do the Ss have sufficient
understanding of what each gift
means to complete this task?
-Does the task enhance Ss
understanding of the significance
of Confirmation?
