Hockey

Hockey has been around for hundreds of years, during which time it
has gone through many changes and has infuenced many skaters. The game
of ice hockey was derived from the game of feld hockey which originated in
Northern Europe. ce hockey was started by a !anadian named ".#.
!reighton. The rules he created were applied in the frst indoor hockey game
played by the students at $c#ill %niversity in &'(). ce hockey came to the
%nited *tates in the year &''+ and e,panded to parts of Europe and the
%nited -ingdom in the early &.//0s. 12History of Hockey234.

The game of hockey is played on ice where players use hockey sticks
to shoot a puck inside the opponent0s net in order to score goals. There are
si, players on each side, including fve skaters and one goalie. 9f the fve
players, there are three forwards and two defensemen. f a penalty is called
on a player, the player is sent to the penalty bo,, which means his team has
to play without him for two minutes. $inor penalties are two minutes long
while ma:or penalties are usually served for fve minutes. $inor penalties
consist of tripping, elbowing, slashing, roughing, high5sticking, delay of game
and boarding. !harging, fghting and checking from behind are known as

There have been many changes since the NH6 was created on
November 3A, &.&(. Bor e,ample, on "anuary ., &.&' the NH6 allowed
goalies to come out of the crease to make a save. The crease a certain area
on the ice in front of the net designed to allow the goaltender to perform
without interference. 9n *eptember 3(, &.+/ the NH6 created the 2oCside0s
rule2, where if the player passes the blue line and enters the opponent0s Done
before the puck does, the referee will blow his whistle and will call oCsideEs.
f an oCsideEs call is made a face5oC occurs outside the Done. < face5oC is
two opposing skaters trying to take control of the puck after it is dropped
between their sticks by the referee. 9n *eptember 33, &.+7, the NH6
approved penalty shots. This only occurs when a player is fouled while in a
scoring position. @uring the penalty shot the player who was fouled only gets
one chance to score on the opponent0s goalie all by himself. <lso, on $ay +/,
&.)/, the rule 2delayed whistle2 was introduced to the game. This means
you continue to play until the team who committed the penalty touches the

three years of age. There are many levels of hockey they can play, including
mite, mini5mite, sHuirt, peewee, bantam and midget. Brom there they can go
on to play at the college level. <fter that comes :unior hockey and then minor
hockey leagues. The ultimate goal for every player is to be drafted to play in
the NH6. Brom the month of 9ctober through the month of "une each year,
hockey teams play an average of '3 games. There is nothing Huite as
e,citing as going to an NH6 game and watching it in person compared to
viewing it on a television.
