Pergamum

Rev 2:12-17 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things
saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; (1! " #now th$ wor#s%
and where thou dwellest% even where &atan's seat is: and thou holdest fast
m$ name% and hast not denied m$ faith% even in those da$s wherein Antipas
was m$ faithful mart$r% who was slain among $ou% where &atan dwelleth(

+efore the children of "srael% to eat things sacri,ced unto idols% and to commit

that hath an ear% let him hear what the &pirit saith unto the churches; To him
that overcometh will " give to eat of the hidden manna% and will give him a
white stone% and in the stone a new name written% which no man #noweth
saving he that receiveth it(
Intro.: As we leave the &m$rna on our 2ourne$( &hortl$ we would come to
them to the small Tur#ish town Pergamum( A+out 23%333 in population and in
a small valle$% said he sits on an ancient hill( And in this ver$ attractive cit$ of
small +and of 4hristians worship the savior( "t is to that church that the third
letter is addressed(
1. Pergamos
a( The proper form of the name is Pergamum( The name
Pergamum means thoroughl$ married( "t is a compound of two
5ree# words meaning thoroughl$% and marriage( &o per gamun
means thoroughl$ married(
+( The original cit$ was +uilt on a loft$ hill% which afterward +ecame
the citadel as houses sprang up around its +ase(
c( The local legends attached a sacred character to the place%
which% together with its natural strength% made it a place of
deposit for ro$al treasure(
d( The cit$ was mainl$ inde+ted to 6umenes ""( (+(c( 177-1-7! for
its em+ellishment and e8tension( "n addition to wal#s and pu+lic
+uildings% he founded the li+rar$% which contained two-hundred-
thousand volumes% and was second onl$ to that of Ale8andria(
e( The #ingdom of Pergamum +ecame a Roman province +(c( 13;
+ut the cit$ continued to 9ourish% so that Plin$ st$led it by far
the most illustrious of Asia(
f( All the main roads of :estern Asia converged there( Pergamum
was cele+rated for the manufacture of ointments% potter$%

tapestries% and parchment% which derives its name (charta
Pergamena! from the cit$(
g( "t contained a cele+rated and much-fre0uented temple of
Aesculapius% who was worshipped in the form of a living serpent
fed in the temple( 1ence Aesculapius was called the 5od of
Pergamu $ou m% and on the coins struc# +$ the town he often
appears with a rod encircled +$ a serpent(
h( There was also in this cit$% a temple to the god ;eus( ;eus was
+elieved to +e the father of all gods% and this will +ecome
signi,cant% +ecause we are told that in this cit$ &atan<s seat
dwelled(
i( There is also in this cit$ the ,rst temple that was +uilt to
6mperor worship( Add this to the two previous mentioned
temples% and $ou see that this cit$ was a cit$ wholl$ given over
to idolatr$(
2( And again in #nowing this% we +egin to appreciate wh$ the =ord
referred to Pergamum as the dwelling place of &atan's seat(
#( All false religion is satanicall$ inspired% satanicall$ motivated%
some religions are openl$ satanic% while others reveal their
satanic origins as the$ fail to teach the truth of &cripture(
l( The cit$ also had springs which had m$sterious healing powers(
>uch li#e =ourdes% ?rance( The healing that was e8perienced in
Pergamum was not divine% +ut satanicall$ ena+led(
m( The cit$ has +een descri+ed as a sort of union of a pagan
cathedral-cit$% a universit$-town% and a ro$al residence%
em+ellished during a succession of $ears +$ #ings who all had a
passion for e8penditure and ample means of gratif$ing it(
2. The Description of the Lord - The sharp sword with two edges

cleaver( The Roman soldier would +ring it down forcefull$ slicing
