This annual event is always well organised and very good fun to attend. Like any & all good raffes you always seem to win a prize or three, I won a book of Japanese postcards, not something that I would rush out and buy, but I will probably use them. I also won three rather dreadful side plates that I will in due course give to some charity in the future to put into another raffe somewhere. All in all this fund raising event was well attended by many good souls and enjoyed by everyone including me. PK Continued On Page Six Above Alex Hannah doing her bit selling tickets for a kids draw. So what will our good friend, Nigel Holmes, be like? I do not know. I would encourage our Crab Tales readers to go along and report back their views on him becoming a full time Ringmaster, see you there on the 5th, as we will be there. In the meantime I do like the special poster (below) Nigel and wish you all the very best. I would also like to thank Pamela Cyugier from Peterborough, for her letter regarding the now lost rabbit, in Peterborough. I do hope that this city is a suitable location, in which a former Norfolk rabbit can lead a happy and long life & produce many more happy rabbits. I can already hear many of our local farmers objecting to these comments. Now, nearly 100 years since the start of the Great War I am very grateful to both Terry Raymond for his poem and Bob Wilkinson for his letter about Bert James, and I hope Bob will get some response to his quest. It is so easy to forget just how young these men were then. The question I am always left unanswered is why was this ever called the Great War? With so many good folks being killed for our freedom. There are many commemoration services and special exhibitions going on in this area so please check our Special Events pages for all the details. The Carnival Childrens weeks will start on August 4th and our next issue out will be covering all of the Cromer Carnival Events. Whatever you do this summer, do enjoy the Cromer Carnival. So I would like to invite your readers to help me out and try to fll the big top. I need all the help I can get. My invitation goes out to those who have not been to a circus in years. Old & young. And actually it would be great to see the older generation (of which I am one) coming to the show. Circus is for adults as much as children so come with a friend or on your own. You will be assured a warm welcome, particularly at this live and exclusive show. You can set your TV recorder to pick up the usual telly stuff, so theres no excuse. Please come to cheer me on and help me keep control of the clowns, tightrope walkers and jugglers. Its just 6 for a two hour live show, right in the centre of Mundesley. Regards Nigel Holmes Hi Philip, Hoorah! The circus is in Mundesley. And this year I can reveal exclusively in the Crab Tales that for one night only there will be a new ringmaster in town. Namely me! In this totally professional circus show they will be letting a certain Mundesley resident, Nigel Holmes, wear the red coat and top hat to take charge of the ring. What fun! This will happen ONLY at the 5.30pm show on Tuesday the 5th of August on Mundesleys Gold Park. Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. NR27 9DS 4 Letter Continued From Page 3 Letters Continued on Page 12 Dear Philip, On behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance I would like to thank all the people of West Runton who kindly opened their gardens to the general public on Sunday 29th June to raise money for the E.A.A.A. We are really grateful and appreciate all the time and effort to make your gardens look their best. I have received a total sum of 1101. 25 from this event. Once again many thanks for supporting a very valuable service and a big thank you to Andre and Pam Staros who organised this enjoyable day. With kind regards Jamie Edghill (EAAA) Dear Philip, As a summer resident in Cromer for more years than I can remember I must say that the summer show at the Pier Pavilion is one of the best I have ever seen. Wonderful artists all round. I took my daughter and grand daughter with me (it was thier frst time) and they both enjoyed it. Keep the good work up Cromer pier, you are a credit to your wonderful town thank you. Adrian Shepherd Leicester Dear Editor, We have a caravan at East Runton and over Easter we noticed a very small rabbit running under our van and car. He grew slightly larger each time I saw him. Then we decided it was time to go home and loaded up the car. We stopped at Kings Lynn for half an hour, then went on our journey of approx 65miles altogether. Well when we arrived home we started to unload as you do and as I turned round I noticed a rabbit on the drive, we were tired at the time and never thought, my husband put the car in the garage and around 5am the alarm went off. He went out ready to meet trouble and there on the bonnet sat the said rabbit, he had taken a ride Dear Editor, I have been asked to arrange an exhibition at All Saints Church, Beeston Regis to tell the stories of the men who died in the First World War and who are buried in the churchyard or otherwise commemorated in the church. There is mystery surrounding the burial in the churchyard of a young Australian RFC pilot from Adelaide (see attached story below) Despite my researches and those of a friend in Adelaide we have been unable to fnd out why Captain James was buried in Beeston Regis and I would be grateful if you could fnd room to publish the story in the hope that one of your readers can help with additional information. Bob Wilkinson 01263 825 364 with us all the way and hopped back from the drive into the garage. Needless to say my husband took the car to be checked out in case we had a nest but Peter was a loner. He hopped off and was never seen again. I hope the local rabbits accepted him well and he now has many babies as the saying goes ha. Pamela Cyngier Peterborough Captain Bert James Royal Flying Corps In the churchyard of All Saints in Beeston Regis is the grave of an Australian pilot who served in the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force in the First World War. Bert James was 20 yrs old when he left Adelaide, Sth Australia on the 23rd March 1916, aboard the P&O Steam Ship Malwa, to sail to England to join the Royal Flying Corps. He qualifed as a Flight Lieutenant on June 3rd and was sent to France as part of 3rd Squadron where he few reconnaissance missions. On July 17th 1917 he had a crash and smashed his machine but got off with a shaking. On July 19th he came down again, landing in a shell hole, wrecking his plane and receiving injuries to his knee. He was sent back to England for treatment and during this period qualifed as Captain and became an instructor and when his commanding offcer was on leave Captain James was put in charge of 50 offcers and 300 men. He was reported to have shown great skill in the time he was in charge. It is possible that he spent this time with 63rd Training Squadron in Redcar, but this cannot be confrmed from his records. The Royal Flying Corps became the Royal Air Force in April 1918. Above The headstone in All Saints church. It seems that in May 1918 he was returning to his squadron on the Western Front when he had a fatal accident over Dartford, Kent. Despite research in Norfolk & Adelaide we have, as yet, been unable to fnd anything in his family history or service record which links Captain James to North Norfolk that might account for his being buried in the churchyard at Beeston Regis. On Right : A photo of Captain James from his local paper in Adelaide when they reported his death. If anyone can provide any information we would be very grateful so that his full story can be told as part of the WW1 commemorations planned by All Saints Church and then preserved in the church records. NR27 9DS 6 The video will be released in early August. Independent shops and cafes are a major part of what makes Cromer Cromer, part of the Cromer character that attracts visitors. The threats to high streets across the country have been well documented, Cromer high street cant escape - its not just the economic climate and the weather which affect the spend in the shops: shopping habits are changing as more of us buy online - at the end of last year over 12% of all shopping in the UK was online. The Cromer Digital High Street was set up in in 2013 in response to the challenge posed to independent shops by the rise in online retail. By working together across Cromer, and with retailers across the country, a network of shops has been created, enabling a low cost & low risk way for independent retailers to sell online with local support and a national presence. This is developing into the online presence for Cromer, showing the range and reach of shops in Cromer, building on the high street to show Cromer as the destination. The Cromer Digital High Street is one of the pioneering towns on the MyHigh.st network which supports over 400 independent retailers, 15 towns, and a vast social media presence across all the major networks. The video is a love story mixing online retailing, click & collect and the physical town of Cromer in an interesting blend of new and old, showing the range of independent shops across the town. The flm production is by local media and drama students with much of the story set in the Sticky Earth Cafe (Above) where the story commences. It then moves across the town, visiting Artyfax, Digbys, Lily B, Little Gems, Wet Dog, Yappers and Barkers, and Cafe Main. The flm fnishes on the prom where, after the traditional twist, the story ends happily with the lovers walking away hand in hand as the credits roll. (Below) Continued From Front Page The Cromer Community & Hospital Friends have told me that this years Fete was the most successful yet and raised approx 3350. An Irishman.... ......wants a job, but the foreman wont hire him until he passes a little maths test. Here is your frst question, the foreman said. Without using numbers, represent the number 9. Without numbers? The Irishman says Dat is easy. And he proceeds to draw three trees. Whats this? the boss asks. Have you aint got no brain? Tree and tree plus tree makes 9 says the Irishman. Fair enough, says the boss. Heres your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99. The Irishman stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree... Ere you go. The boss scratches his head and says: How on earth do you get that to represent 99? Each of da trees is dirty now. So, its dirty tree, and dirty tree, plus dirty tree. Dat makes 99. The boss is getting worried that hes going to actually have to hire this Irishman, so he says: All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100. The Irishman stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says: Ere you go. One hundred. The boss looks at the attempt. You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred! The Irishman leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and whispers: A little dog come along and poop by each tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, which makes ONE HUNDRED! The Irishman is now head of Ryan Air. This wonderful county primary school is in very good health and on my arrival I was introduced to Daniel Stevens, aged 11, going on 12 in August, who showed my around the school during his fnal couple of weeks at the school. (Far Right) Having been at this school since the age of three, Daniel is a fne example of how good the school is. Daniel is going onto become a student of the Cromer Academy in September, I do wish him all the very best. Alongside numerous others attending this jolly coffee morning, there were a number of former pupils of this popular local school, all very supportive of the place and the staff. You cannot but like and admire the work of everyone running the school, particularly the head teacher, Mrs Angie Hamilton, (Above) who during the morning happened to win a wonderful looking cake, talk about being an in-house set up, I was assured otherwise. With only 24 pupils in the main school and 17 in the pre-school it is small indeed and as someone said: It is like a Big family for their happy pupils. PK Vale Road, Mundesley On Friday July 18th, I met up with two gentlemen from the NNDC and David Pardon of Mundesley Electrical, half- way up Vale Road, on the Mundesley slope, to discuss the future management of the site. It is now open for the public to access, both holiday makers & the boat owners, wishing to launch their boats from there. In summary, I would suggest that there is no problem there, so long as the visitors would PLEASE refrain from leaving their rubbish there, which seems to be the main problem at the moment. It is certainly a lovely part of Norfolk and is well worth preserving, without the rubbish being left lying around there. The long and short answer it to preserve the place as it is, without any rubbish being left there, either now or in the future. I would say that this should apply to anywhere we visit, as residents or as holidaymakers. I would also like to add that parking on the beach is not a good idea, I draw readers attention to the photo on left of someone who did, which was in Issue 38 of the Crab Tales, page 8. One Summers Day They went to war one summers day You will be home for Christmas they heard them say They were eager to go, they went so fast Little did they know how long it would last
They fought so bravely in every battle But a lot of the time they were treated like cattle When they were rested they would send home a letter And replies from their loved ones would help them feel better
Then sometimes they were face to face with the foe When crossing the lines to play football they would go But they knew when the game came to an end The next day they might kill their new found friend To the enemy the Generals would not yield They sent thousands to die in muddy Flanders feld They advanced on the enemy in the rain and the cold But death did not choose between young and old Onward they went into the ferocious gun fre Forming human bridges over tangled barbed wire Past dead comrades who had died before Knowing they were released from the horror of war. For those who survived the war it was hard For many the rest of their life was scarred Now, I knew a man who with sometimes I would walk But of the times of that war he never would talk I ask you please on that day in November Please stop for a moment and just remember Of those men who died for their King and the Kingdom So that what they gave has given us freedom. They fought with such courage when they gave their lives Leaving to mourn them, Mothers, Girl friends and Wives So when you stand silent on that eleventh hour Please wear with pride your red Poppy fower ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yours sincerely Terry Raymont
Letters Continued from Page 4 Mundesley Ladies Keep Fit, is now closed but thankfully it will re-open by September, this time under the direction of Annamarie, who already runs a similar class in Cromer. The MLKF was set up by the then District Nurse Hines in 1960, before it was taken over by Hazel Collingham in 1965 until 2009, i.e. Over 44 years ago. When Hazel retired, in December 2009, Pamela Malone offered to take over for a couple years! Well now with a number of ladies keeping ft and losing weight classes in the village, Pam is retiring from running these classes. I know Pam from the Mundesley Film Club and as an admirer of how very much she does. On July 17th, I went along the street to her last class full of some 18 ladies doing their bit. I really must say that not many of them looked as though they needed to attend to loss weight, far from it. At just past eight in the evening, the class kicked off with the ladies all taking notice of Pamela directions while doing their exercises to the background music and every one of them seemed to know what they were doing and also enjoying the routine which ran for about 45 minutes before the tables were set up for wine & snacks while enjoying a chat about the last, near on, 50 years and of course to thank Pam for the time and energy she has put into running the Ladies Keep Fit over so many years. I really enjoyed witnessing the dedication Pam has given this this group of charming ladies.
PK You Can Still Keep Fit Ladies Above & Below : Pam with her class of ladies and above, standing next to Pam, is former class teacher Hazel, wearing the white top. Dear Philip, I would like to say a very big Thank You for highlighting my book Five Moves For Lucy. I have a slight problem as we mentioned in the article that the paperback book was available on Amazon. Unfortunately for me and hundreds more new authors works are not available in paperback at present as they are, I understand, all being vetted by the EU??? I dont have all the information as they will not tell me, but they only say that some new law is holding things up and everybody new, now has to be validated? Amazon also do not like it because they say they are losing a lot of money because of this. However strange it may seem the very same book is available on Amazon Kindle and has been for the past 3 months and I have no idea when it will be available as a paperback from Amazon -You Couldnt Make It Up!! If your readers want the paperback version it is available from Jarrolds, Cromer & Norwich. Thank you once again for all of your valued help for which I am extremely grateful. Yours Sincerely, Jenson Speed CAN YOU HELP PLEASE? His mind sees things differently than most of us do. Here are some of his gems... 1 - Id kill for a Nobel Peace Prize. 2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- they dont expect it back. 3 - Half the people you know are below average. 4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name. 5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot. 6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good. 7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory. 8 - If you want the rainbow, you have got to put up with the rain. 9 - All those who believe in psychokinesis, raise my hand. 10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. 11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend... But she left me before we met. 12 - OK, so whats the speed of dark? 13 - How do you tell when youre out of invisible ink? 14 - If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something. 15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm. 16 - When everything is coming your way, youre in the wrong lane. 17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy. 18 - Hard work pays off in the future; laziness pays off now. 19 - I intend to live forever... So far, so good. 20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends? 21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels dont get sucked into jet engines. 22 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice? 23 - My mechanic told me: I couldnt repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder. 24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name. 25 - If at frst you dont succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried. 26 - A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking. 27 - Experience is something you dont get until just after you need it. 28 - The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread. 29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research. 30 - The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard. 31 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time youll have to catch up. 32 - The colder the X-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it. 33 - Everyone has a photographic memory; some just dont have flm. 34 - If at frst you dont succeed, skydiving is not for you. And the all-time favorite: 35 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work? Thanks to David Thorne for this Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. Gifts Again Written by Miranda Marshall Partner at Hayes + Storr This is the third article in a series about making gifts. After all the dire warnings in my last two articles, I would like to focus on some of the positive aspects of making gifts. There are 2 popular sayings which quickly spring to mind on the subject of lifetime giving: There are no pockets in shrouds. and It is better to give with warm hands. No one has yet found a way to take their worldly goods with them when they die; although the Egyptian Pharaohs tried their best. The pleasure of giving is often considered to be greater than that of receiving. Benefting from a gift sooner rather than later can alleviate fnancial need at the time when it is truly required. It can also allow a younger person to get their foot on the frst rung of the housing ladder before it gets pulled up and forever out of reach. There are other slightly more technical reasons than just the rosy glow of benevolence. From an Inheritance Tax planning point of view, provided of course that the giver is left with enough to continue their standard of living and to provide for a rainy day, it is the usual mantra of Give as much as you can, as soon as you can and live as long as you can. that applies. Generally, gifts made more than 7 years before death pass to the recipient Inheritance Tax free. In handing over assets during ones life there can also be savings in the cost of administering the estate following a death and it can reduce the unavoidable delays of Probate in processing an estate on death. In some carefully assessed and planned circumstances, the need to sell assets to pay for care fees can be avoided. The assets given may, in much the same way, not be taken into account if the person has to undergo means-testing for benefts or publicly-funded services. Should the person making the gift lose mental capacity & no Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) be in place, it can avoid the expense & delay in applying to the Court of Protection for a Court Order to manage, sell or otherwise deal with the asset. Attorneys are often surprised to discover that it is usually not straight-forward and often not even possible for them to make gifts on behalf of the person who appointed them. Gifts of a seasonal nature are permitted with- out Court authority but otherwise the Courts approval to such gifts must be obtained in order for those gifts to be valid. It is diffcult, expensive and slow to obtain the Courts approval to make larger gifts on behalf of an attorney. Margaret Luckett-Gray.. ....from Walcott raised 3250 for The Norfolk Bone & Joint Appeal by organising a Variety Show at Davenports Magic Kingdom recently. NR27 9DS 18 Coastwatchs Charming Chanteuse Earlier this year the charming Cerian Ellson wooed Cinderella & wowed audiences with her performance as Prince Charming in Mundesley Players annual Pantomime. Now be prepared to be charmed again! Cerian will be singing at the Mundesley Coastwatch Family Fun-Day on Saturday August 23rd. Her programme will refect her eclectic taste - from Jazz to Rap - and the versatility of her unique voice - very modern with a blues infuence. Cerian is certainly making her mark on the music scene. She has performed at Norwich Playhouse, the Atrium & school assemblies, and will appear at the North Walsham Beer Festival shortly. Her enjoyment of music goes back to early child- hood and her strong voice and confdence were obvious even at pre-school, where her talents were frst recognised and she was cast as the Bossy King in a production. Now moving on to Paston College to study Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies plus psychology & sociology, Cerians career choice is to become a singer, but she is also interested in Criminal psychology. Perhaps there is a way of combining the two? So, dont just take our word for it - come along to the Mundesley Coastwatch Family Fun -Day on Bank Holiday Saturday 23rd August and hear Cerian for yourself. You wont be disappointed but you WILL be charmed. (Cerians spot will start around 12 .30) Remember, you heard her here, frst.. Thanks to Judy Peters for this.
