Main Street, Lexington SC 29072 803.359.4146 24-hour prayer line: 803.808.7729 lexingtonbaptist.org FROM THE PASTOR Dr. Mike Turner Senior Pastor pastor@lexingtonbaptist.org miketurnerblog.com Im excited every summer by our Week of Refreshment, and this years Come Awake! promises to be a special blessing for us! Beginning Sunday night, August 3, our church family will have the chance to spend several evenings together, worshiping, being encouraged and fnding spiritual refreshment. The schedule for the week is in this issue of the Signal, and you can tell its going to be a great week. So make plans to hang out with your LBC family for these four days and bring someone with you. I want to give a shout-out to our choir! Week after week, these dedicated, gifted men and women lead and encourage our people to worship and were all blessed by them. And let me add this encouragement to the larger con- gregation: if youre looking for a place to serve, and you have a heart for worship, theres a place for you in this community of worship leaders. Theres no better place to make a difference in the life of our congregation than in the weekly leadership of corporate worship. So I want to give you a special invitation to connect with this wonderful group. You can contact our Minis- ter of Worship, Dan Williams, directly at dan@lexingtonbaptist.org or simply attend choir rehearsal on Wednesday night at 7:15 in the Choir Room, over the Worship Center. Pam and I spent a wonderful afternoon recently with a group of our young married couples. Three different Sunday School classes came together for a Sunday afternoon picnic and invited us to join them. We had a blast- these are young families who connect every Sunday for Bible study and fellowship. Many of them in fact have been baptized into our church. They stay in touch with each other through the week and have built an authentic community of encouragement and faith. But theres more. These folks had invited the residents from our local wom- ens shelter to join them as well. They understand that theyre called not just to being friends with one another but also to reach out to the larger commu- nity in Jesus name. So we had the privilege on that day of not only spending time with some of our own great people but also getting to know some folks who are going through some hard times and need a special touch from the Lord. This is Sunday School at its best, when we recognize the centrality of study- ing Gods Word in a small group of people in community with one another, while at the same time reaching out to the world around us. These arent the only Sunday School classes who are faithfully doing the work of the ministry like this- far from it! So many other Sunday School classes throughout our church family, of all ages, are engaged in the same way. Loving one another and reaching out to the world. How grateful I am for all that is happening through our Sunday School ministry! Two new Sunday School classes are beginning in a few weeks. One is a class for newly married couples. The other is a multi-generational class that will include people of all ages. You can fnd the details of the classes elsewhere in this issue of the Signal, but I wanted to mention it to you in a special way, so that if you or someone you know is looking for authentic community and the chance to grow in faith, you can have the chance to connect with these groups. Youll be blessed! Pastor Mike 3 For children, chicken strips and French fries are also served at each meal. All meals include rolls & butter, assorted desserts, salad bar, iced tea, lemonade and coffee are also served. Reservations Required. Deadline for Reservations and Cancellations: Sunday at 5 p.m. Make Weekly/Permanent Reservations! Please make reservations online or by calling 803.359.4146. Beginning on August 17, Pastor Mike is beginning a new, three-part series called Stand Up: Living Right-Side Up in an Upside-Down World. This series is all about learning how to stand in truth and fnd genuine commu- nity, real faith and stop keeping up with the Joneses. Try inviting a friend with you for this one- its going to be a great encouragement! LexKids Road Trip Summer Review What an amazing summer weve had! Here are a few highlights:
We were able to sponsor community outreach events while empowering our families to join in the mission. These events provided an opportunity for us to connect over a length of time with people from all over Lexington. As a result, weve enjoyed welcom- ing these new friends as guests on Sunday mornings. Weve provided opportunities for families to worship, learn, pray, have fun and bond over the course of the summer. Our children have learned that their faith extends beyond church on Sunday morn- ings or an event. Weve used the summer to set up our ministry to extend into the school year and support the primary purpose of our ministry: creating a culture of small groups where adults strategically invest in a few over time to build an authentic faith. Children are given a place to belong where they come to know God and are known by peers and a constituent, caring adult. Guess What?!?! We arent done! Fam Jam Worship Night, Family Fun Nights and Small Group Hang Times will be happen- ing quarterly throughout the whole year! 4 Moving Up Celebrating our Rising First Graders This fall, your kindergartener will be moving from our preschool ministry into our elementary ministry. Instead of mak- ing these changes all at once, we are go- ing to provide your child with a gradual transition upstairs and provide you with a guide to help make this exciting time of growth super special for your child. Check out the events listed below and pick up your Moving Up guide with all the details in the childrens ministry lobby. 5 2014 Moving Up Events Family Worship {all summer} To prepare your child to begin worshiping with your family, its a great idea to start the transition over the summer. You might choose to take them with you for the music portion before you deliver them to Sunday School. If there is a special event such as baptism or special music, take advantage of that as well. Elementary Large Group {July 13} Your kindergartener will begin participating in elementary large group time with his or her current small group. You will continue to drop off and pick up in their current classroom. Promotion Sunday {August 17}
All children ages two to 12th grade Move Up to their new class and grade level. Moving Up Ceremony {August 24} During our Bible ceremony, well welcome our frst graders into the ele- mentary ministry by presenting them with a Bible and challenging them to bring it to church each week, study it at home and hide Gods Word in their hearts. Kids will receive a hard back Adventure Bible and enjoy a cookie reception with their families. Please register by emailing Kristen at kking@lexingtonbaptist.org by August 17. There will be no Sunday School on Tailgate Sunday, August 31, 2014.
Wee Care will be provided for ages birth through fve years during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Children will eat lunch with their families at 11:45 a.m. Join with us! We want our kids to see God! We can create exciting environments, plan relevant, meaningful lessons and plan ways to partner with par- ents. The necessary component, though, are team members who desire to invest in the next gener- ation. The most valuable resource you have to help people see God are the people in your church who know God Lead Small Culture Introducing: Lex Kids Unlimited! What is Lex Kids Unlimited? Lex Kids Unlimited is the Special Needs Ministry of Lexington Baptist Church. It serves as a place where children have the freedom to have fun and experience Christ-like love. Who will Lex Kids Unlimited serve? Lex Kids Unlimited will serve children and families who are impacted by special needs. What are the goals of this ministry? - We desire to create an environment where every child feels safe and is pointed to Jesus. - We want to build trust with families of children with special needs so they will feel free to participate in their own Sunday School classes and worship. Why was this ministry established? There is a need. Around 19% of all Americans have been diagnosed with a disability of some kind. There is huge potential to engage this population in Lexington County. What is currently available through Lex Kids Unlimited? - The sensory room at Lexington Baptist Church will make available toys and tools that will engage children in gross motor play, satisfy a sensory need or provide a quiet area free of the visual and auditory distraction that naturally occur in childrens ministry. After meeting their sensory needs, the children are integrated back into the typical small group. This room is to be used by children whose families have gone through our special needs orientation and whose parents have approved and directed our use of this room. - As determined by parents, special needs buddies are available to assist children who may beneft from one- on-one care. - Our greatest desire is to understand every childs unique abilities and specifc ways we can serve their families. For this reason, we will offer a private orientation and building tour to allow parents to express individualized needs to ministry directors. - Special training for our volunteers and accommodations within the typical classroom will be provided. How do I enroll my child? Enrollment packets are available at the LexKids information desk during regular church programming as well as during offce hours Monday- Thursday, 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Orientation may be scheduled by emailing Kristen King at kking@lexingtonbaptist.org How can I get involved? We are currently seeking individuals who display love, creativity and patience and who believe children with special needs can love God and serve their world. To volunteer, please contact Maegan Bolding at maegan@lexingtonbaptist.org 6 Maegan Bolding Childrens Ministries Director Maegan@LexingtonBaptist.org Upcoming Student Ministry Events 7 Student Ministry Families, I cant believe summer is over, and we are headed into the Fall of 2014. The LBC Student Ministry has some amazing things planned for your fami- ly this year. Sunday, August 17 is our Promotion Sunday. A couple of things that you should know right out of the gate are that we feel honored to partner with your family during these crucial years of your students lives, and we consider our students to be part of a large family. We are constantly reminding our students that since we are a family, they need to make it a point to come when we are meeting together. Its all part of this process of sharing life together- be intentional in encouraging your student to connect with this ministry. We try to provide an environment where students can connect with their peers, adult leaders and, more importantly, God when we meet together; dont miss out on these opportunities. Look for ways to connect on our website, social media, newsletters, text messages, etc. We are excited for the journey we are about to embark on together! Reggie McNeal Writer, speaker, teacher Come Awake in your Faith Ice Cream Social to follow August 3- August 6 7 p.m. each night in the Worship Center Join us this August for our annual Week of Refreshment! This years theme is Come Awake! Well be kicking off the week on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. in the Worship Center. Each evening will feature a guest speaker and special music. Heres the line up for the week: Encounter 431 was started from a desire to refect Acts 4:31 when the place where the believers were praying was shaken- they were flled with the Holy Spirit, and they were empowered to speak Gods word boldly. Encounter 431 is a place that was created for students to come in the middle of each week to recharge spiritually, experience the presence of the living God and hear His word in order to stay strong amidst a lost generation. We meet every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. for a time of food, fellowship, worship and a message from one of our youth pastors. Coming up on August 20, we are having a launch party for our second year of Encounter 431. This semester, I am especially excited for the times of worship that we will share together. Lately God has been showing me that as a worship team, my students and I need to be desperate for the manifest presence of God to come and fll our hearts as we worship. Psalm 34:6-9 (MSG) says, When I was desperate, I called out, and God got me out of a tight spot. Gods angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray. Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and seehow good God is. Blessed are you who run to him. Worship God if you want the best; worship opens doors to all his goodness. Being desperate for God together is a powerful and unifying thing. As Pastor Mike spoke about a few Sundays ago, desperate people are the ones who fnd faith to release Kingdom power in their lives. They are the ones who get truly transformed. They are the ones who start to hear Gods voice and guidance in their lives. They are the ones who receive the motivation and boldness to share about our amazing God to people they used to be embarrassed to talk to about God. Desperation brings true life change. This year, we are excited to see true life change in our church, our students and all of the places they are involved. Continue to encourage your students and their friends to get involved with Encounter 431 this year. There will be real and authentic times of fellow- ship and worship that they wont want to miss! 8 Jordan Herndon High School Ministry Director JHerndon@lexingtonbaptist.org Monday, August 4 Concert of Prayer & Praise* led by Jennie Lee Riddle Worship leader, speaker and songwriter Come Awake in your Prayer and Praise *The Lords Supper will be offered Tuesday, August 5

The two rehearsals for this day are Wednesday, August 13 & 20 at 7 p.m. We will be singing the great anthem Thou Oh Lord. We are excited to have Jeff Cranfll as our special guest for the annual Evening of Instrumental Praise with the LBC Or- chestra on Sunday, August 24 at 6 p.m. Jeff currently serves as the Minister of Instrumental Music at First Baptist Atlan- ta. His ministry includes arranging and composing music for church orchestra, choir, band, various ensembles and full or- chestra- an overture premiered by the Chattanooga Youth Symphony. His arrangements have been published by sever- al companies, including his own publishing company. He was named Church Orchestra Director of the Year by the Christian Instrumentalists and Directors Association in 1999. We are also busy getting ready for Come Awake!, our annual Week of Refreshment August 3 through 6. We have some spe- cial musical guests that week, including a night of prayer and praise led by Jennie Riddle (writer of Revelation Song) on Mon- day and a mass choir of both LBC and Brookland Baptist Church choirs on Wednesday. I am also very excited to welcome Woody and Debbie Lingle on Tuesday, August 5. Woody and Debbie met when they both toured with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians in the 1980s. Debbie is a singer and Woody is a singer/bass play- er. Woody has toured with groups such as Margaret Becker and Steve Warner and currently is the bass player for Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. He has been serving as the Music Minister for Ebenezer Baptist Church in Cordova. You will be blessed by this couple who love the Lord and are a delight to the Gods people wherever they go! 11 LBC Missions You Are Making an Impact! Lydia Lorenson is a LBC member who is currently serving at Shiloh Adventure Camp in Florida this summer. In appreciation of LBCs support, she wrote: This has blessed me so much- thank you! Im so thankful that God has given me an opportunity to serve Him in such a beautiful way this season. All glory, honor and praise to our Lord who has been working through me. I have been relying on the Spirit the entire time, and God has been evermore faithful. Shi- loh tries to fundraise for 25% of campers, and most of them are foster kids. To see them receiving joy from the Lord through worship is an amazing sight. So thankful that I will be witnessing this all summer! God bless Lexington Baptist. With prayer and care, Lydia Lorenson And another expression of thanks from Samaritans Well: Thank you so much for your generosity in supplying materials for installing our foor coverings. My heart is so gladdened to have this much-needed project underway. Thank you for helping make it possible! In His Peace, Mona Henderson Sunday School Classes on Mission Each month, we want to highlight one of our Sunday School classes and their missional efforts. This months class is taught by Don Evans. Below are Dons comments about the important role of missions in the class: Several months ago, I became bur- dened that the Sunday School class that I lead needed to put hands and feet to what we were studying about each week. As I shared this conviction with my class, we agreed to become intentional about taking Lexington Baptist Church to our community. We decided to serve meals at the Salva- tion Army in Columbia quarterly, bring food for the LICS food pantry weekly, visit a Lexington nursing home once a month and help widows in our area. While we have a number of mission projects going on each week, two re- cent projects have been especially meaningful to our class. The men of our class recently built a pumphouse for a lady who had problems with her pipes freezing this past winter, and we are presently taking meals to a gen- tleman in our community who is strug- gling with cancer and is receiving che- motherapy and radiation. He told one of our classmates that it was Gods work when people who had never met him were willing to do this for him. This lady and gentleman may or may not ever attend a service at Lexington Baptist, but we took Gods love and encouragement to them. - Don Evans What Can You Do? Impact Schools: Annual Supply Drive As part of our continuing mission emphasis on schools in the Lexington area, we are currently in the middle of our school supply drive. There are collection and information stations in the church foyer. If you would like to fnd out more about the school supply drive or any of the LBC school-based ministries, please visit the missions station in the foyer, contact the Missions Offce at jwright@lexingtonbaptist.org or call us at 803.996.8836. D Groups (short for Discipleship Groups) are a way to connect intentionally with other believers and grow to- gether through Bible study and fellowship. We are excited to start this month with fve new D Groups, as well as a new sermon series by Pastor Mike. These groups will each meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. They will run in two identical six-week sessions, allowing you to participate in two different groups this fall. Heres what we are offering: Philippians: Finding Joy in an Anxious World 4 and 6:15 p.m. in the Chapel Pastor Mike Turner The book of Philippians is one of the true mountain top experiences of the Bible. Its message is captured in the well known promise: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand- ing, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. In our modern world, with fear and anxiety on every heart, the timeless message of this portion of Gods Word has special meaning. Building Better Marriages CHB 207 Chris & Patty Hix Communication in marriage can sometimes be diffcult. Why? Because we each learned how to communicate long before we got married. The good news is that behavior can be changed. Couples can learn new skills and modify old patterns in creative ways so that their relationship becomes stronger and mutually satisfying. Ready to Launch CHB 202 Jerry & Kimberly Freeman Christian parents are not seeking mere behavior modifcation in their children but the growth of truly godly passions. Training a child up in the way he should go must be done intentionally, with the mind and heart of God. Based on Psalm 127, this study plumbs the wisdom of the Bible about the goals of parenting, the stages of discipline, the role of the church and strategies to shape the heart toward the gospel. {Book cost: $12} Discovering Gods Way of Handling Money CHB 210 Gary Deese Did you know that the Bible is a blueprint for managing your fnances? There are more than 2,350 verses that address everything you need to know about handling money. Not only is this study practical, but in it youll learn the profound impact managing money has on your relationship with God. {Book cost: $9} Me, Myself & Lies: A Thought Closet Makeover CHB 201 Rachel Capps This Bible study encourages women to clean out the negative thoughts in their minds related to things like self-esteem, body image and stress, and to replace them with positive truths from Gods Word. {Book cost: $12} Kingdom Man: Every Mans Destiny, Every Womans Dream CHB 203 Chuck McDaniel and Ray Hill Our culture has redefned manhood by emasculating men through a repositioning of their role. The Bible clearly communicates that man was created to exercise dominion over the various areas of his life, taking responsi- bility for himself and others entrusted to his care. When a man functions within the principles of biblical man- hood, those around him beneft from his leadership and care. This study challenges and equips men to fully understand their position under God, learning to operate under the authority of Jesus Christ. {Book cost: $12} 13 Beginning on September 7, we will be offering two new Sunday School classes: Young Married Class Teachers: Ruby Huthmaker, Ted & Judy Talmage, Danny & Catherine Higginbotham CHB 302 at 9 a.m. Are you recently married but not yet parents?
