Introduction

Ethics is the base of human relationships. All decisions, opinions and thoughts of a human
being are based on ethics. They are construct by our life experiences and teachings of our parents.
In a academic environment, our ethic it is the principles that will guide our decisions. It is important
do not confusing with moral principles, that is basically the rules of society and that stays above
ethics. We can compare morals like a lter for our ethical principles.

Principles acquired in our life experiences and by teachings of our parents that guide of
decisions, thoughts and opinions.

Findings of research and interview

In your opinion, what is academic ethics and integrity?

It is like a code of conduct of each individual build in life experiences and teachings of the
family.

What are the departmental policies of academic ethical behavior?

Once that ethics are rules of each person, do not exist polices about that, although, if you
call the rules of the university ethics, the are many of them for the regulation of university but a do
not believe that rules are the same of ethics, like a said.

What kind of behavior are unethical in your department? Please give one or two example.

I have a really good example. One of professor park his vehicle in the handicap parking
spot. He is not a handicap but he is a senior. In his mind he have the right to park there but it is a
consensus that is a unethical behavior, even if he is a senior the spot is clearly reserved to
handicaps.

What are the consequences of the unethical behaviors?

Well, in the case of professor parking in handicap park there was no consequences. He
park every day in the same spot in nobody do anything once that is no rule about what to do in a
case like this. So, sometimes there are no consequences for theses behaviors.

Have you seen or experienced any unethical behaviors?

I think that the professors case answer that question.

Comparison

In the research was possible to observe that exits differences between Brazil and United
States. In United States people are more guided by the rules than Brazilians. It is very common to
do not follow the rules exactly as they are. An other difference is that Brazilians when making
decisions thought more themselves. Their decisions are not make for the best of community but for
the best of themselves.

Conclusion

No matter what, ethics it is vey difcult to talk about. It is a confusing subject with different
interpretations. It changes between nations and even between individuals. However, it is intrinsic in
our being and fundamental in every relation in our life.
