Year End Report 2013-2014: 60 Minute Kids Club Entrenching Healthy Habits in Canadian Youth 2 INTRODUCTION The 60 Minute Kids Club is the multi-pronged approach that will solve childhood Inactivity and Obesity. The program and platform provide a balanced, real world and digital approach to entrenching healthy habits and physical literacy into our kids lifestyles. WHY THE 60MKC WORKS The program is anchored in best practices learned and honed over 20+ years of experience in our private personal training business Innovative Fitness: Incentive to participate Accountability to results Since 2009, the 60 Minute Kids Club has been serving school communities to best serve the needs of teachers, families, and most importantly the kids. Working closely together and listening to ongoing feedback, the 60MKC has been revised to ensure the program: Actually makes kids active Is lightlift and turnkey for teachers Is sustainable Is fun and exciting community and family experience Is a hub of free resources for physical literacy and healthy/ active living 60MKC PROGRAM: There are three 60/45 challenges throughout the school year, skipping over holidays and busy times at school i.e., Christmas, spring break and summer. Once the child is registered, he / she is encouraged to track their daily healthy choices across 6 trackers. We have incorporated the 5-2-1-0 message. Healthy Choice Daily Trackers Each time a student logs in and tracks their activities, they receive points which aggregate under their school and from here we can determine the most active kid / grade, grade / school, school / district, district / region and region/ province and province / country. STATEMENT OF HISTORY, GOALS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO DATE Nutrition Screen Time Activity Hydration Sleep Mental Health 2009/2010: The 60 Minute Kids Club is piloted in 5 schools within 3 provinces (Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC) and reaching 5,000 kids. 2011/2012: Focused on program rollout in BC and Ontario. Despite Job Action, 60MKC doubled in BC and more than quadrupled participation in Ontario and achieved a combined participation rate of 70%. 2012/2013: 60 Minute Kids Club reached over 42,000 students in 155 schools, across 8 districts in BC and Ontario - while maintaining an average participation rate of 62%! Join the Club. Your Club. The 60 Minute Kids Club. Lets enable and empower future generations of healthy kids. Together. We have all heard the rhetoric, read the alarming headlines and have been shown all of the negative statistics. There is no argument we have an OBESITY EPIDEMIC. All our kids deserve a good start at a good life. As professional personal trainers and lifestyle coaches committed to healthy living and active lives, we are both horrified and saddened at what we as a country are doing to our children. A relentless stream of headlines, articles, and personal stories screams at us about the sedentary lifestyles of our children, the frightening rates of childhood obesity and the fact that our kids are on a certain path to unnecessarily shorter life spans, and the onset of preventable cancers and chronic diseases. And that of course, is to say nothing of the dragdown effects unhealthy lifestyles have on their learning ability, self esteem, and quality of life. On these points, we can all agree. Yet nothing changes. In fact, things only ever seem to get worse. The vision and plan to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity, does not happen without partners, collaboration, private and public working together. In order to drive awareness of the issue, awareness and engagement of the program and promotion of the 60 Minute Kids Club Challenges - we need the strength and resources of socially responsible and community focused organizations. Join our movement for movement and together we can get kids fit for the future! Visit 60 Minute Kids Club Special Moments for more! Each class is encouraged to track their activity and healthy eating on the 60 Minute Kids Club website. During our weekly assembly the class who was the most active and healthy wins the title of the GOLDEN RUNNING shoe for the week! School Champion Katrina Ballek, in their second 60MKC Challenge this school year! ____ We are enjoying it very much. It is simple to use and the students love it. To get it started, we simply made it an optional health and wellness goal for our students and as you can tell it was embraced by many. Thank you very much for organizing this. Is the website still active for them to continue charting their progress once the two month challenge is over? From a School Champion, Annie F. in Alberta ____
Our local Healthy School Coordinator, thinks the website is very user friendly and looks forward to helping kids get involved with the 60MKC. From an Ambassador (Josee Warren from Pacific Sport - Merritt) ____
They were great - I did three of them as I have too many classes to stage all at once: Yesterday I did one for the Grades 1 and 2; today for Grades 3 and 4, then Grades 5 &6. Today I spent a part of the PE lesson (I hooked my laptop and projector) and demoed to my classes how to sign up using my dummy marinabonello kid: And will be doing this for the rest of the week to reach all my classes. The class teachers are becoming involved too and some parents are signing up as well. Got a whole bunch of emails from the parents and it seems to being going viral. Will send you photos when I am done putting up my bulletin board. Marina - Europe school ____
Our school is really excited to kick off the program this year. Last years winner kicked it off with a PA announcement on October 1st. Moms have told me their kids are excited to go to bed, drink more water and get activity. Mrs. Boles is launching a poster contest giving the winners extra recess time. So fun! Lynn Fripps - Langley School in BC Year End Report 2013-2014: 60 Minute Kids Club Entrenching Healthy Habits in Canadian Youth 17 60MKC: FORGING A WELLNESS BRIDGE BETWEEN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA AND ATLANTIC OCEAN The opportunity to participate in the 60MKC Challenge sure kick-started the new scholastic year at St. Aloysius Primary School (Malta). The boys are super-excited to partake in this international wellness initiative. At my gym door each day, I am greeted with eager faces and comments such as: Dr. B., I tracked my points on my own last night! or Dr. B., I ate a new fruit! or Dr. B., I drank 17 glasses of water last weekend or I learned that the Capital City of Canada is Ottawa or Do you know they have Moose and Caribou in Canada! These comments reflect the small but significant health and self- efficacy changes that ARE happening in my school. The program is also promoting my students global awareness for peoples and creatures across the world. Parents too are participating with gusto: many parent emails refer to the benefits of 60MKC in regards to the children asking to consume more fruit and veg and water. The adult wellness challenge is bringing together parents and teachers. 60MKC is enabling me to reach across the ENTIRE community in a holistic and engaging manner. Dr. Marina Bonello (aka Dr. B), Physical Education & Health Specialist St. Aloysius Primary School, Balzan, MALTA (Europe) ____
My own two children, who attend Fr. Frederick McGinn, have really taken to the program - so much so that I wish it wasnt coming to an end. Hoping these healthy habits stick. They just ran upstairs to ensure they had time to read before bed. And, during these cold indoor recess days theyve been coming home and playing ministick hockey and other active activities to ensure they get their 60 min. of exercise. Theyre even measuring water to try to max out. I must say that weve gone through a lot of oranges and lettuce too! Plus, they love beating me. lol- Justin just came back downstairs and pulled out the veggie container. This is the only way Im going to win, he just said. Hes in competition with his brother. Have a good week, Karen August, MEd, H&PE Teacher (St. Joseph Aurora) Co-Chair Athletic Association YCDSB ____ The grade six students at Atlantic View accepted the Winter Challenge and although they were a bit unsure at rst, did very well. Once they began to track their progress in the five areas of the 60 Minute Kids Club Winter Challenge, they realized that making positive changes in improving nutrition and being more active was something well within their grasp. Many of our students enjoyed the friendly competition, which helped motivate them to stick with it and meet their goals. Even some of our more hesitant students focussed on one or two areas such as drinking more water and reducing screen time resulting in them doing very well in the challenge and helping our school improve. The Challenge has also provided us with data that can be used to inform our school improvement goal that focuses on healthy active living and Year End Report 2013-2014: 60 Minute Kids Club Entrenching Healthy Habits in Canadian Youth 18 improved nutrition to enhance learning preparedness. The momentum is now there and we are looking forward to our grades two to six classes participating in the Spring Challenge! James W. King Principal Teacher, Atlantic View Elementary, NS ____ The 60 Minute Kids Club is a great way to bring parental involvement into the school physical education program. Parents/teachers and students are working together staying and becoming healthy by setting goals and tracking healthy choices. Rachel Harnett, Brookmill ____ 60 Minute Kids Club has been a wonderful experience for our school. Through our involvement with 60MKC we have been able to continue our focus on healthy and active living. The staff at 60 MKC are supportive and enthusiastic. It creates a school wide common language that supports what we try to teach our children every day. It takes away the emphasis on the notion that exercise must be a hardship and replaces it with the lesson that active living involves so much more, including play. In addition, the other components, (decreasing screen time, increasing sleep, drinking water, positive thoughts) all provide a holistic approach to healthy living and reinforces what we as educators have been saying for ages. This means that it becomes less daunting for the students who typically do not see themselves as athletes. 60 MKC makes healthy living a reachable target for everyone. Finally, the fact that they can track not only their own progress, but also, that of the school makes it a fun competition. Lesley Dyce, Brookmill Blvd J.P.S ____ After the 60 Minutes Kids Club, I found it easier to stay healthy as you remember this website and that you would have to fill out your tracker by the end of the day. I find this website a lot better than last year and I do enjoy the touch-ups. Lily Trinh, Chimney Hill Elementary ____ Our School Improvement Plan includes health and wellness in a big way! The 60 Minute Kids Club provides a framework for this plan as it promotes not only active living through exercise but also through healthy eating, sleeping habits, reduction of screen time and positive thoughts. These are all important facets of our School Improvement Plan as we address Community, Culture and Caring on a daily basis at Brookmill. Year End Report 2013-2014: 60 Minute Kids Club Entrenching Healthy Habits in Canadian Youth 20 THE 60MKC EXPERIENCE FROM BROOKMILL BLVD. I remember the first time 60MKC walked into Brookmill Blvd. and I just knew it was a great program. I reminded the school secretary to give Coach Antonio a warm welcoming and for students to give friendly smiles and waves, it was always a exciting experience having a community initiative visit and speak at Brookmill. My name is Rachel Harnett, and Im the 60MKC Champion of Brookmill Blvd. With the assistance of Lesley Dyce and the school principle, Grant MacPherson, we have participated in the 60MKC Program for the past two years. I loved the 60MKC program and truly seen the benefit the kids have picked up from it. The 60 Minute Kids Club is a great way to bring parental involvement into the school physical education program. Parents/teachers and students are working together staying and becoming healthy by setting goals and tracking healthy choices.
Brookmill Blvd. was the most active school in Canada for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 year. Located in Scarborough Ontario, it was a pleasure to have 60MKC reward Brookmill students with a fully paid for trip to the Toronto Blue Jays in their first year of winning the 60MKC Challenge. Our trip to the Blue Jays game was unforgettable, the weather was great and every single student loved the fact they were being rewarded for being the most active school in Canada. They even created posters saying, BROOKMILL BLVD - 60MKC Most Active School! so that they could display them in the jumbo tron! The second year we won the 60MKC Challenge was even better. 60MKC brought in Martin Reader, Beach Volleyball Canadian Olympian and Ground Work Sessions, pro breakdancers from Yukon for the assembly announcement. The entire school staff were buzzing with excitement, given our experience last year, we knew we were in for a treat. 60MKC prepared a full day dance workshop for the kids and teachers. Grade by grade, Brookmill students learnt how to pop n lock and a variety of awesome breakdancing moves. At the end of the day, Ground Work Sessions put on a 15 minute dance performance for the entire school. The entire school went CRAZY! Lesley Dyce has since said. 60 Minute Kids Club has been a wonderful experience for our school. Through our involvement with 60MKC we have been able to continue our focus on healthy and active living. The staff at 60 MKC are supportive and enthusiastic. Finally, the fact that they can track not only their own progress, but also, that of the school makes it a fun competition. There is no better feeling than having the kids, parents, and teachers love the 60MKC Challenge. A feeling that was confirmed when Grant thanked me for bringing the 60MKC Challenge to Brookmill Blvd., and stated This is the best day in Brookmill History! When the day came to an end, I couldnt help but reflect on the great experience the 60MKC challenge helped create. An experience that inspires and instils healthy living in the entire school community. The 60MKC program aligns with the school curriculum and supports health and P.A. programs. Brookmill Blvd. uses the 60MKC Challenge in our healthy action plan and it is part of the school council meeting agenda each month With the incorporation of the 60MKC Program, Brookmill Blvd. has been able to promote healthy habits and acknowledge students and teachers for being healthy and active everyday!
