Domain A

Domain A is subdivided into 5 criteria and is responsible for

teaching:

A1 Dominates the contents of the disciplines taught and the national curriculum
Framework.

A2 Know the characteristics, knowledge and experience of their students.

A3 Dominates the teaching of the disciplines taught.

A4 Organized objects and contents in a manner consistent with the curriculum

framework and characteristics of their students.

A5 Assessment strategies are consistent with learning goals, the discipline that
teaches the national curriculum framework and allows all students to
demonstrate learning.

3
Domain A Criteria A 1

A1 Dominates the contents of the disciplines taught and the national curriculum
framework.

1) Teachers must be realistic about their capacity and the quality of their
teaching inside the classroom. If the teacher does not have enough English
language proficiency, he or she should become aware of it and take the
necessary steps to fix the situation in pro of a higher quality education.

• Maybe the teacher only need more practice. Therefore, he or she can
use different internet programs to improve his or her proficiency.

• If the teacher feels that his or her problem is not only lack of practice
the teacher should take a course. Some schools are always open for
teacher’s excellence giving the opportunity to participating on courses or
small classes given by education specialist in the English language or any
other educational field that can help the labor of teachers inside the
classrooms. Teachers have to take full advantage of these opportunities.

2) Teacher must not forget that he or she has to be in a constant “knowledge

updating” and that a “teacher never ends his or her studies”. Teachers need
to avoid being stuck in one level of professional knowledge.

3) For foreign language students and teachers like us, is very easy to forget
about the language if we do not practice it. Teachers must practice the
language as much as possible with their colleges. In our opinion, it is the
only opportunity that teachers have to full practice the language.

4) The use of English inside the classroom is crucial. Too many teachers of
English use the L1 to teach an L2, teachers need to work on utilizing English
as the main language spoken inside the classroom. The more expose the
students are to the language the better.

5) Teacher must have a full knowledge of the programs and objectives

established by the Ministry.

Personal Experiences

“In my personal experience, I consider that my guide teacher in VISE II y VISE III
is an open person, because she is always looking for new activities, exercises,
movies, etc that can be useful for the class. Also she shares a lot with the other
English teacher who works in the school. For other side, when I did an activity that
kept her attention, she consider it and included it in her own classes, also she
congratulated me when I used some resources that caused a good effect in the
students motivation.”

“In my personal experience, the teachers that I had worked with in my Vise I, II and
III have had a well thought structure as I have seen the student’s response to their
classes.”

“She also develops the unit with the same instruction (translation and memorize
vocabulary teacher doesn’t improve her teaching, she got stuck in old ways of
teaching She also complains she hasn’t enough time to create more interesting
activities.”

Domain A Criteria A 2

A2 Know the characteristics, knowledge and experience of their students.

This aspect refers to the understanding that teachers are not teach their discipline
"in empty“, that they teach to specific students in a definite contexts and specific
conditions and characteristics which should be considered when designing learning
activities for the students.

The teacher must be familiar with the developmental characteristics corresponding

to the age of their students, their cultural and social experiences and previous
knowledge, skills and competencies regarding the target discipline.

1) To know the students is a job that teachers have to accomplish

in order to succeed in teaching. Teachers have to acknowledge and
assume that every student is different from each other and every one has
different characteristics that need to be addresses through different
teaching methods.

2) Teacher needs to observe his or her students, need to know

more about them. The teacher can use surveys, interviews, or background
knowledge provided by other teachers, or by the school directors.

3) The teacher needs to think about the topic that he or she will
cover during her or his classes taking into consideration the student’s
reality, interests, level, age and needs. In addition, the teacher needs to
decide if the students will work in groups, pairs, alone, etc, to help develop
their social skills.

4) The teacher will have to identify the students over the average
as well the students above the average and take steps to fulfill their
individual needs. The teacher will have to decide if he or she will create a
different planning for these students, or maybe include more activities.

5) Teachers have to give students the tools to reach their goals

and interests in that way only the teacher will avoid living students behind.

6
Personal Experiences

“In my personal experience, I consider that this aspect is very difficult to achieve,
because the teacher only spends a few hours a week with students, and takes a
lot of time to start to know them. I consider that my guide teacher tries to
understand the student’s interests but it seems that they not feel the same.
Because they think that the activities that she prepares are boring.”

“In my experience, the time spend in class has given me little time to get to know
all the students but with the help of my guide teacher I had a more clear idea of
how the students work and their educational necessities. To know their names is
also very important as gives the students more self-confidence that translates in a
better learning.”

“She focuses only in the best students not being an example for her student
because she only values the best students in her class.
In my experience my teacher does in a way that, this students need to learn
electrical English but she only base her activities in the minimum that they are
going to use the language, for example she teach translation of security advices
because she says that in the future they only are going to use the language when
they go to by something to home center, and they need to understand the advice
label. So, instead of giving them more tools where to use and how to use the
language she just uses the minimum.
She also doesn’t try to know her student much more than through their grates and
only what she believes how their students are.”

7
Domain A Criteria A 3

A3 Dominates the teaching of the disciplines taught.

This aspect refers to the principles and pedagogical skills necessary to organize
the teaching process.

The teacher must have a thorough knowledge, pedagogical skills and tools to
facilitate proper mediation between content, students and the respective learning
context.

1) Teacher needs to read a lot about teaching approaches, and always needs
to be creating new activities for their students considering their interests,
abilities and context.

2) Well thought lessons and keeping continuity is important for a successful

learning process.

3) Teacher needs to be open to new ideas. If a teacher thinks that only he or

she has the perfect teaching method will never improve professionally.
Teacher’s pedagogical skills are always perfecting and for that, it is
recommendable to share experiences with other teachers and analyze the
effects that this strategies cause in their students. Therefore, teachers can
help each other to create the best strategy to teach to their students.

4) Teachers need to be sincere with themselves about the results that their
techniques cause in the learning process. If they note that they are useless,
they have to move to other strategies and resources. Teaching reflection is
a good way for teachers to evaluate their work. If teachers think about the
results of their activities and the methods that they use inside the classroom
the results will be successful.

5) To work with a teaching method that the teacher feels comfortable with and
have total dominium in order to take full advantage of it is a must. But it is
also necessary to consider the individual necessities of the students and be
open to intermix the different approaches inside the classroom in order to
give equal learning opportunities to the students.

8
Personal Experiences

“In my personal experience, I consider that my guide teacher in VISE II and VISE
III had enough English language proficiency, but I don’t think the same about my
VISE I guide teacher.”

“My first two guide teachers used very little English inside the classroom, which I
thought, was caused by the amount of students participating in the class. Too
many students make the teacher’s job too hard in terms of keeping discipline and
the attention of all the students. Teachers must be trained to deal will such
situations. On the other hand, my present Vise has only 20 students, which make a
great difference in conducting a class.”

“As I have been realizing my Vise I did not observe this kind of knowledge
completely. First my guide teacher do not use the foreign language, she only uses
some words and not in whole sentences.”

9
Domain A Criteria A 4

A4 Organized objects and contents, in a manner consistent with the curriculum,

framework and characteristics of their students.

1. Teachers need to include in their planning every aspect of education giving

equal importance to the cognitive development of the students as well as
the values necessaries to function in our society.

2. Safe keeping the activities that the teacher tries and work well with the
students for future use. If the teacher knows that, the activity can be a
success it can be also share with other teachers.

3. Teacher must have a full knowledge of the programs and objectives

established by the Ministry in order to be included in the activities planed by
the teachers.

4. Consider teaching activities varied spaces of speaking, reading and

sculpture by students related to learning addressed in the various
subsectors.

10
Domain A Criteria A 5

A5 Assessment strategies are consistent with learning goals, the discipline that
teaches the national curriculum framework and allows all students to
demonstrate learning.

1) The evaluation criteria used are consistent with the learning objectives.
The teacher uses various assessment strategies that allow integrating the
proposed contents. The assessment shows if learning were achieved.

2) Assessment strategies are consistent with the complexity of the content

involved.
The teacher knows which strategies to use to address different skills and
competencies.

3) Learn various strategies and assessment techniques commensurate with
the discipline it teaches.
Know the most appropriate strategies for achieving the objective.

4) Assessment strategies provide students with equitable opportunities to

demonstrate what they have learned. Known strategies identify the level of
learning.

Personal Experiences

“In this case my experience was as follows: Professor evaluations used consistent
with the subjects learned. When I had to teach my unit, try to use different
strategies within the same class. I do different techniques and methods very
entertaining and dynamic. Any kind was equal to the previous one; always I try to

a s s e s s t h e le a r 11
surprise the students, obviously some methods and exercises that give me good
result, I again used.”
Conclusion

In conclusion we can say that all the areas of which we have spoken within critera
A are very important for good school development.

It is essential that teachers have mastered the content of the disciplines taught and
the national curriculum framework, because each school has its own rules and
regulations and most of them impose this curriculum framework.

Furthermore, knowledge about the student is a major concern because we know

that students are much more than a number in the room. Each has an inner world
filled with concerns, problems, different experiences, each is complete.

It is important to use all the techniques and methods needed for the benefit of
students´ learning. The teacher must learn various teaching strategies and
activities consistent with the complexity of content. Teachers must also learn
strategies and assessment techniques commensurate with the discipline they
teach.

We could see that in most schools, English language isn’t spoken in class, very
little English is spoken in the classroom which we think is a mistake, since the less
time the students are exposed to the English language, the less likely it is they will
learn it.

Some teachers repeat much of their strategies and do not consider all students;
they do not consider that some students learn in a holistic way, others step by step,
and others visually and so on.

When a person stands in front of students intent on conveying lessons, they must
be well prepared in all the areas already mentioned, knowledge, strategies,
techniques and everything needed for a successful and differentiated classroom
experience.
