PDF Signature Verification
1 . Overview
This document helps the end user to verify the Inline PDF Signatures when viewed in
Adobe Reader.
1.1. Pre-requisites
User should have Adobe Reader 6.0 or above versions to view and/or verify inline
PDF Signatures. If the certificate chain is not included in the signature, then it is
preferable for the user to have the issuer certificate file of the signer.

2 . Signature Verification
Viewing Signatures
Open the Signed PDF document in Adobe Reader and click on the signatures icon
(present in Adobe Reader 8) or signatures tab (present in Adobe Reader 6 and 7)
present on the left side.

A new left pane displayed and one can view list of all the signatures affixed on the
PDF document as shown below.

Right-click the signature details field and then you can view a list of options as
follows
1. Go to the Signature Field This option will help the user to view the page
containing the signature field.
2. Validate Signature This option will help the user to validate the signatures.
3. View Signed Version This option will help the user to view the signed
version.
4. Show Signature Properties - This option will help the user to show the
signature properties.

If you view the question mark symbol (as shown below) for the signatures that are
affixed then follow the steps given below
Click the Signature field that displays the Question Mark symbol.

Check if it displays the following message
The signers identity is unknown because it has not been included in your list of
trusted identities and none of its parent certificates are trusted identites.

A. Steps to add certificate to the Trusted Identities
1. Click Document Manage Trusted Identities (in Adobe Reader 8) or
Document Trusted Identities in other versions of Adobe Reader

2. Following dialog box is displayed
Select Certificates in the Display combo-box. Click Add Contacts button.

3. Click Browse button to select the certificate to be added to the trusted
identities and then click Import button.
Note: If the issuer certificate is TCS CA then please check the Download TCS
Certificate section present in this document on steps to get the certificate file.
On clicking Browse, select the certificate to be added to the trusted identities.

Once the import is successful, following message is displayed

Issuer certificate will get added the list of Trusted Identities as shown below.

4. Edit the trust of the added certificate. Select the certificate and click Edit
Trust button. Following dialog box is displayed.
5. Check all the checkbox as displayed above and click OK.

B. Steps to remove the revocation check
Verify the PDF signature again. Click the signature and check if the following
message is displayed.
The signers identity was valid when it was issued, but no revocation checks could
be made to validate the identity at this time.
1. To remove the revocation check option, click Edit Preferences

2. Select Security in the left pane. Click the Advanced Preferences button.

3. Uncheck the checkbox corresponding to the revocation check as shown
below
4. Click OK and save the settings.

Now, verify the signature by clicking the signature field again.
3 . Download TCS Certificate
You can download the TCS Certificate using the following steps
1. Type the following URL in the browser

2. Click the Current Certificates link present under CA Certificates

3. Click the TCSCA link to download the certificate
4. Click Save in the download option dialog to save the certificate.
