Average distance from Earth: 238,855 miles (384,400 km)
Contains Different Phases or Shades: This is caused by
illumination from the reflection from the Earth and the Sun.
Shades: The side facing the Earth and the Sun is lit up, while
the opposite side is in constant darkness.
Phases: The phases of the Moon depend on its position in
relation to the Sun and Earth.
Rotates: As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we
see the bright parts of the Moon's surface at different angles.
