INTRODUCTION
Sports is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual
or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills
while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators. It is an
important part of every society to improve healthy life living of individuals. It can
develop the physical and mental health, and well-being in the community.
The Municipality of General Trias formerly San Francisco de Malabon, is a first
class municipality in the province of Cavite, Philippines. Within this municipality, the
four-hectare agricultural land located at Barangay Santiago was developed as General
Trias Sports Park. It was accomplished through the collaboration and harmonious
partnership of Intel Technology Philippines, Local Government of General Trias, and the
Department of Education.
General Trias Sports Park houses the world class track oval, run-ups, athletic
fields and Sports and Science Instructional Building dedicated to produce potential
athletes and further enhance educational development among students and residents of
General Trias.
A sports complex is a group of different sports facilities like football and baseball
stadiums, gymnasiums, and swimming pools. Gymnasium is a building or room designed
and equipped for indoor sports, exercise, or physical education. Grandstand is an open
structure with rows of individual seats for spectators.
In this research, the author will propose a design of gymnasium and grandstand
as part of the Development Plan of Sports Park in General Trias, Cavite. This will
provide quality facilities for the benefit of the community. And will be helpful in
improving physical development of the municipality.

Statement of the Problem
This study aims to answer the following:
1. What are the facilities and materials needed for the proposed gymnasium and
grandstand?
2. What benefits does the gymnasium and grandstand will provide?
3. What is the probable estimated cost of the project if it is implemented?

Objectives
The general objective of the study is to provide a design of gymnasium and
grandstand as part of the development plan of the sports complex in the municipality of
General Trias.

Specifically the study aims to:
1. Provide architectural, structural and detailed specification plans of the
gymnasium and grandstand;
2. Determine the estimated cost in construction of the project; and
3. Provide the municipal office a data for the future development of General
Trias Sports Complex.

Importance of the Study
The study will enhance the authors abilities and knowledge in planning,
designing and estimating of the said structure.
This will serve as reference which can benefit the Civil Engineering students and
professionals for their specific studies relating to the above structural design project. The
design to be prepared includes architectural, structural and detailed plan of the structure.
This should provide a convenient sport facility that promotes the prospect of
sports opportunities in the community. And it may showcase the ability of the
sportsmanship among Gentriseo and enhancement of youths mentality towards sports
to develop a good outlook and camaraderie. As the record shows the General Trias Sports
Park is one of the premiere and classified as world class sports venue and because of this
the local government is eyeing for profitable tourism spot in sports.

Time and Place of the Study
The study will be conducted at the College of Engineering and Information
Technology, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from July 2014 to January 2015 as
part of the preparation of the manuscript. Some data and information will be gathered
from the Municipal Engineering Office of General Trias, Cavite.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on producing the architectural and structural design of the
gymnasium and grandstand. Both the grandstand and gymnasium will be designed as
reinforced concrete. This will include the structural analysis, design and cost estimate of
the proposed project. It will not include the layout and cost estimate of the electrical and
plumbing.

Definition of Terms
Badminton. Badminton is played using strung rackets (similar to tennis rackets, but
smaller, more flexible and much lighter) and a feathered shuttlecock by either two
or four players on a marked rectangular court. It can be played indoors or
outdoors, although games normally take place in a draft-free indoor environment.
The object of the game is to score points by hitting the shuttlecock over
the net into the opponent's half of the court, so that it hits the ground before they
are able to return it. The court measures 44 feet long and 20 feet wide and is
divided by a net into two identical halves.
Basketball.Basketball is played by two (2) teams of five (5) players each. The aim of
each team is to score in the opponents' basket and to prevent the other team from
scoring. The game is controlled by officials, table officials and a commissioner, if
present. The playing court shall have a flat, hard surface free from obstructions
with dimensions of twenty-eight (28) m in length by fifteen (15) m in width
measured from the inner edge of the boundary line.
Beam. A horizontal structural member supporting loads from a floor or roof system to
columns, girders or walls.
Column.Vertical structural member supporting a floor beam, girder or other member,
and supporting a floor beam, girder, or other member, and supporting primarily
vertical loads. Member with a ratio of height-to-least-lateral dimension of 3 or
greater used primarily to support axial compressive load.
Dead loads are gravity loads of constant magnitudes and fixed positions that act
permanently on the structure. Such loads consist of the weights of the structural
system itself and of all other material and equipment permanently attached to the
structural system.
Environmental Load - These are loads that act as a result of weather, topography and
other natural phenomena (e.gWind loads, Snow, rain and ice loads, Seismic loads,
Temperature changes leading to thermal expansion cause thermal loads,
Ponding loads, Lateral pressure of soil, ground water or bulk materials, Loads
from fluids or floods, and Dust loads
Foundation.A system of structural elements that transmits loads from the structure
above to the earth.
Live loads are loads of varying magnitudes and/or positions caused by the use of the
structure. Sometimes, the term live loads is used to refer to all loads on the
structure that are not dead loads, including environmental loads, such as snow
loads or wind loads. However, since the probabilities of occurrence for
environmental loads are different from those due to the use of structures, the
current codes use the term live loads to refer only to those variable loads caused
by the use of the structure. (structural analysis by aslam kassimali)
Load Combination.A load combination results when more than one load type acts on the
structure. Design codes usually specify a variety of load combinations together
with Load factors for each load type in order to ensure the safety of the structure
under different maximum expected loading scenarios. For example, in designing a
staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a
live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load. These two
"factored loads" are combined to determine the "required strength" of the
staircase.(wikipedia)
Other loads. Engineers must also be aware of other actions that may affect a structure,
such as:Support settlement or displacement, Fire, Corrosion, Explosion, Creep or
shrinkage, Impact from vehicles or machinery vibration, Loads during
construction.
Reinforced Concrete. Structural concrete reinforced with no less than the minimum
amount of prestressing steel or nonprestressed reinforcement as specified in the
applicable building code.
Reinforced Concrete. Structural concrete reinforced with no less than the minimum
amount of prestressing steel or nonprestressed reinforcement as specified in the
applicable building code.
Reinforcement. Steel bars or wires embedded in concrete and located in such a manner
that the steel and the concrete act together in resisting loads.
Slab.A molded layer of plain or reinforced concrete, flat, horizontal (or nearly so),
usually of uniform but sometimes of variable thickness, and supported by beams,
columns, walls, other framework, or on the ground.
Spectator. A person who watches an event show, game, activity, etc., often as part of an
audience.
Structural analysis is the prediction of the performance of a given structure under
prescribed loads and/or other external effects, such as support movements and
temperature changes.
