Content Area: Geometry Math Grade Level: 9-12 CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Experiment with transformations in the plane: 1. Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on the undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc. 2. Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g., transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch). 3. Given a rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid, or regular polygon, describe the rotations and reflections that carry it onto itself. 4. Develop definitions of rotations, reflections, and translations in terms of angles, circles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and line segments. 5. Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure using, e.g., graph paper, tracing paper, or geometry software. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another
Big Ideas:
Undefined and defined terms in geometry. Transformations (reflections, rotations, translations and Dilation) Rotational and reflective Symmetries.
Unit Goals and Objectives:
Upon completing this unit, students will be able to:
o Precisely define the following geometrical terms: angle, circle, line segment, perpendicular line, parallel lines. o Represent transformations in the plane using transparencies, digital tools and/or geometrical software. o Define transformations: rotations, reflections, and translations. o Understand the meaning of rigid transformations and non-rigid transformations. o Compare between rigid and non-rigid transformations. o Correctly draw the image of a geometrical figure after rotation, refection and translation. o Identify the rotational and reflective symmetries for regular polygons such as rectangles, parallelograms and triangles.. Unit Summary:
This unit sets the basics to the huge aspect of the term Congruence! Very rich content that includes big titles and a packet of new information such as symmetry, rotations, translations and reflections. This unit is a concrete base to build on to define the term Congruence through rigid "distance and angle reserving" transformations. Students will explore rotations, reflections and translations of points and geometrical figures. Amazing and interesting unit! I hope you will enjoy it too!

Summative:
Journal Webercise Test or presentation (for the whole unit) Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective:
After this lesson, students will be able to: Identify the three undefined terms in Geometry; a point, a line and a plane. Define the following five terms: circle, angle, perpendicular line, parallel lines and line segment.
Acceptable Evidence: Journal. Guided notes.
Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Lesson Activities: my ideas :essential question Teacher presentation and guided notes. Activity 1: create a journal. Activity 2: complete guided notes. Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective:
After this lesson, students will be able to: Define the term Transformations such as rotations, reflections and translations. Apply transformations to geometrical figures. .
Acceptable Evidence: Webercise.
Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Lesson Activities:
Students will use the internet to finish their Webercise activity.
Lesson 3 After this lesson, students will be able to: Identify the reflections that carry a regular polygon to itself. Identify the rotations that carry a regular polygon to itself. Acceptable Evidence:
This lesson covers the third standard in Geometry for high school level. Students will learn about reflections and rotations that carry a geometric shape (especially regular polygons) onto itself. Students will explore a website about Reflection symmetry. Then, they will also explore another Define symmetry, line of symmetry, rotational symmetry angle and rotational symmetry order.
website, a PowerPoint presentation and a digital tool about Rotational symmetry. (The links are provided below). Students will complete a graphic organizer activity (T Chart). Students can work together as a group or as a pair. The T Chart must include information about many geometrical figures such as: Identifying lines of symmetry (if there are any). Identifying the angle and the order of rotational symmetry. Illustrations (draw the rectangle with its lines of symmetries). Explanations or notes (as needed)
