Introduction

Valves are mechanical devices that controls the flow and pressure within a system or process.
They are essential components of a piping system that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a
fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing
various passageways.
Types Of Valves :
Valves Symbol Application Images
Check Valve

Allows the fluid to pass
in one direction only

Needle Valve

It allows precise
regulation of flow,
although it is generally
only capable of
relatively low flow
rates.

Ball Valve

On/off control without
pressure drop, and ideal
for quick shut-off, since
a 90 turn offers
complete shut-off angle,
compared to multiple
turns required on most
manual valves.

Four-way valve

Control the flow of
steam to the cylinder of
early double-acting
steam engines

Butterfly valve

Flow regulation in large
pipe diameters.

Solenoid valve

Electrically controlled
hydraulic or pneumatic
valve

Control Valve

Control conditions such
as flow, pressure,
temperature, and liquid
level

Diaphragm valve

Controls flow by a
movement of a
diaphragm. Upstream
pressure, downstream
pressure, or an external
source (e.g., pneumatic,
hydraulic, etc.) can be
used to change the
position of the
diaphragm.

Relief Valve

Control or limit the
pressure in a system or
vessel which can build
up by a process upset,
instrument or equipment
failure, or fire.

Plug Valve

Can be rotated inside
the valve body to
control flow through the
valve

Gate Valve

Opens by lifting a round
or rectangular
gate/wedge out of the
path of the fluid

Globe Valve

Used for regulating flow
in a pipeline, consisting
of a movable disk-type
element and a stationary
ring seat in a generally
spherical body

Angle Valve

Operated valve with its
outlet opening oriented
at right angles to its
inlet opening; used for
regulating the flow of a
fluid in a pipe.

3 Way Valve

Shut off water flow in
one pipe while opening
water flow in another
pipe, to mix water from
two different pipes into
one pipe, or to separate
water from one pipe into
two different pipes.

Hydraulic valve

Properly directs the
flow of a liquid
medium, usually oil,
through your hydraulic
system.

Conclusion
Valve is an important part that controls the flow and pressure within a system process.
