Warning Before performing this job, review all pertinent safety information in the text and discuss safety procedures with your instructor. Procedures 1. Obtain a vehicle to be used in this job. Your instructor may direct you to perform this job on a shop vehicle. 2. Gather the tools needed to perform the following job. Refer to the tools and materials list at the beginning of the project. Preliminary Check 1. Open the hood of the vehicle. 2. Apply the parking brake. 3. Have an assistant start the engine and tightly press on the brake pedal while placing the engine in drive. Note If the engine rises more than 1 (25 mm) in the following steps, a motor mount may be broken or soft. If this occurs, make a visual inspection of the mounts using the procedure presented later in this job. 4. Have the assistant slightly open the throttle. 5. Observe the engine. Does the engine move excessively (more than 1, or 25 mm)? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, perform a visual inspection of the motor mounts. Note While checking the mounts, look for shiny places where the paint has been worn away on the frame, body, and underside of the hood. These places indicate that the engine is moving excessively and contacting these parts. Continue to observe the engine as you have your assistant place the transmission in reverse and slightly open the throttle while keeping the brakes engaged. Did the engine move excessively? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, perform a visual inspection of the motor mounts. Visual Inspection 1. Make sure that there is sufcient illumination to see the mount. If necessary, have an assistant hold a light in position to illuminate the mount. Mount locations vary. Figure 7-1 and Figure 7-2 show the general location of motor and drive train mounts on front-wheel and rear-wheel drive vehicles. 2. With the engine off, carefully pry on the engine to raise it in the area of a solid mount. Check for cracked rubber in the mount as the engine moves. Note the damage shown in Figure 7-3. Do you nd any cracked rubber in the mount? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, replace the mount using the procedures outlined in Job 8. 3. Check uid-lled mounts for exterior oil leakage. Do you detect any oil leakage? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, replace the mount using the procedures outlined in Job 8. 4. Check the mounts for loose fasteners. Do you nd any loose fasteners?
